Built in the year 1000, it is located on the Tiber Island immediately after crossing the Fabricio Bridge over the Tiber in the square of the same name which has the Spire of Pius IX in the centre; it is not very big but it is very beautiful, very interesting; it has three naves separated by columns with beautiful capitals and decorations in the upper part, the ceiling is very beautiful and also the decoration that introduces the High Altar, the organ in the choir of the counter-façade is spectacular; all the chapels are very well decorated and rich in elements and all have a beautiful arched ceiling; very interesting visit.

Having walked by the church many times, it was great to finally go inside today. Located on Tiber Island, this church was originally founded by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III in 998. The church was built over an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing. The current Baroque church dates from the early 17th century. Highly decorated interior, with chapels dedicated to various groups of Christian martyrs, such as those persecuted by the Nazis or under Communism, which is rather unique. Well worth seeing if exploring Tiber Island.

The Basilica is on an island in the Tiber River. It houses the bones of Bartholomew, one of the 12 apostles. The exterior is rather plain but is more ornate inside.

The most important temple on Tiber Island is a construction from the end of the 19th century. X, but had several interventions in subsequent times, one of which was in 1557, due to a flood in the Tiber River.
The outside is a little simple, but the inside is very beautiful, especially the ceiling and its paintings in frames of different shapes and sizes. The side walls with the columns and small altars are also interesting, and the main altar is relatively simple.
It has a loud choir and a small pipe organ.
Inside are the relics of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle.
It was visited by Pope Benedict XVI in April 2008.
Entrance was free and there were no tourists, because it is not one of the most visited churches.
In the square in front there is a beautiful spire in honor of Pope Pius IX.

The Basilica of St. Bartholomew on the Island is actually on Tiber Island in a fantastic location. San Bartolomeo houses the memorial to new martyrs of the 20th and 21st century, which was dedicated by Pope John Paul II in 2000. The interior of the church preserves fourteen ancient Roman columns and two lion supports that date from the earliest reconstruction of the basilica. A fresco with Mary Enthroned with the Child among figures of prayers, Byzantine art with clear Romanesque influences, dating back to the 12th century, has re-emerged above a side altar and there is a canon ball buried in the wall!.

The basilica is the main sight on Isola Tiberina, the tiny boast-shaped island in the middle of Rome's Tiber River.
The island is so small that for most people this is just a quick visit as you cross over the two ancient bridges from Trastevere to the old Jewish Quarter.
The basilica is about 1000 years old and was built at the end of the 10th century by the Emperor Otto III. However what you see here today was mostly rebuilt in the 17th century so the facade is all creamy white Baroque grandeur.
Relics of the body of St Bartholomew are kept in a red porphyry sarcophagus under the high altar, along with St Adalbert. Bartholomew was one of the lesser known 12 apostles.
After Jesus’ crucifixion, he travelled, preaching the Gospel in Egypt, Persia, Armenia and India. Polymius, the king of Armenia, converted to Christianity but not everyone was so impressed. In general, the apostles suffered horrible deaths. Simon was sawn in half, John was boiled in oil and Bartholomew was skinned alive, then beheaded.
A statue of St. Bartholomew can be seen in the four sided monument out the front of the church.
The basilica was closed when we were there. Although it is open every day and entry is free, it is easy to miss out like we did because it closes between 1 - 3:30pm.

Well worth a visit. Check out the cannonball that is embedded in the wall of the chapel on the right of the main alter. There is lots of history associated with the church, unfortunately the Church has sustained some damage when the Tiber floods.

This is a wonderful and evocative church situated on Tiber Island. The island itself was previously covered in marble and bedecked as a ship sailing up the Tiber. This was one of the earliest places to be inhabited in Rome.
The Basilica of San Bartholomew is built on the site of the Roman temple to the God Aesculapius who guided the work of physicians. Basically it was an ancient hospital.
The present church dates to 997 though it has undergone numerous restorations since then.
A large porphyry tub under the main altar contains relics of the apostle St. Bartholomew and Adalbert the martyr.
Many churches in Rome are dedicated to martyrs who are long dead. This Basilica, while dedicated to St. Bartholomew, contains chapels which are dedicated to the martyrs of the modern church. These chapels were dedicated by Pope Saint John Paul in 2000 and contain relics of Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko who was murdered for his support of the Polish trade union Solidarity. There are also relics of Cardinal Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, who was murdered for his opposition to Mexican drug cartels.
This lovely church provides a place to honour people who have died for their faith, from Jesus' own companion and follower, to those still suffering for their beliefs. It is truly a special place set on an island dedicated to healing since the earliest times. It is well worth a visit.
