Visited this wonderful museum with my wife. It is based in an old tram shed, which has been tastefully added to with modern glass buildings. An eclectic mix of exhibitions, from fashion to steam machinery, airplanes, steam railway and space exploration. The space station mock up is particularly impressive. A great place to visit.

Not our first visit here and hopefully not our last. Like most museums, there is too much to see at one visit but when we will be able to return is up in the air as we understand it is being closed for refurbishment.

Eclectic museum with different exhibits. My husband loved the electricity, motor and transport sections while I loved seeing the fashion, jewelry and furnishings collections. Quite fun for a rainy morning. This location will close in early February and move to west Sydney.

What a nice museum, with an amazing number of objects in the collections.
As an engineer I have loved the scientific discovery by the experience ( electricty, magnetism, gravity…)
What a nice legendary PBY Catalina they have to show!
That was the initial target of my visit but Indo not regret to have visited the other collections. We will return soon.

Ecclectic and unusal museum, with nothing about first nations aboriginal people at all! Displays represent colonial Australia…..

What an odd museum. I generally love science museums, but this one left me a bit cold. Fragmented displays, almost like the museum couldn’t decide what to display. For an hour while it was pouring down, it was fine.

Fairly close to Exhibition tram stop but an easy walk from George Street at Chinatown. 1001 objects is a fascinating collection of, some weird and whacky, items from their warehouse. There’s other galleries which looked good but we didn’t visit. Cafe was dirty and coffee not the best. Closed at 3pm but museum shut at 5pm.

Make no mistake this place is worth a visit. It’s free for a start and it does contain some really important and interesting historical exhibits. However, much of the collection doesn’t really sit well together and there is no real flow to the place so as a visitor you end up walking back and forth here and there trying t9 work out what to see.
Whilst I was interested to see Kylies ‘Showgirl’ outfit it did not sit well with the Spacelab exhibit which was also very interesting. Nor did the steam engine exhibit go alongside the odd exhibit of crossdressing polynesians.
We did enjoy our visit but left somewhat bemused!!

On the one hand, this is a free museum with eclectic exhibitions but … on the other hand, there is a lot of vacant space and a lot of the collection seems rather random. Objects are sparsely distributed, making the place look spartan and feel a little empty. If I was paying for it, I’d be disappointed.
There are some really good parts, like the historic No.1 Locomotive, which dominates the entrance, and the Space section, with satellites and other spacecraft suspended from the ceiling a number of interactive displays. I also liked the area with the planes and the horse-drawn omnibus which was a great, open space for kids.
There is a large kids’ hands-on play area which is best suited to primary aged children. It’s OK for small children but you’ll need to hold them up to let them see or use a lot of the activities.
Temporary exhibitions come and go. Some are free and others are not. When we went recently, there was a fabulously colourful collection of Mardi-gras costumes. This was free but the Carla Zampatti exhibition, which was also on at the same time, was not.
Currently the ‘1001 Remarkable Objects’ exhibition is on and is free.
For tourists, the Powerhouse is easily combined with other sightseeing.
For example, we caught the train to Central Station and walked along the old Goods Line, which has been transformed into an elevated walking trail. This leads directly to the museum. After the museum, we walked on to Darling Harbour (about a 10 - 15 minute walk) where we stopped at the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Tumbalong Park, and Nick's Seafood for lunch by the water.
NOTE: The Museum will be closing temporarily from February, 2024 for a major renovation. It’s expected to be closed for all of 2024, and re-opening in 2025.

We will be in Sydney for 6 days with kids 6 and 8 years old. Traveling from Japan, American family. Is it worth visiting having not so many days in Sydney? How much time do you anticipate to spend there? Thank you all for answers

6 days is a lot for Sydney. I’m sure you could fit it in a morning or afternoon when you are in Darling Harbour. It’s good interactive fun for kids.
