My wife and I went on a 10-day Rwanda trip (Akagera-Volcanoes-Lake Kivu-Nyungwe) Dec 2022/Jan 2023 with Rwanda Eco-Tours and we can highly recommend them. Our trip included gorilla trekking which is how Rwanda Eco-Tours are listed here, but they also do custom safaris of different lengths.

During planning Osborn was always very quick to respond and helped us put together a good itinerary. Their pricing was competitive, coming in a bit lower than the other companies we inquired with. We also liked the transparency Osborn provided in how the different activities and lodges added up to the total price.

Our guide was Karim and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. Very friendly, patient, safe driver and always on time. He took great care of us and made everything work perfectly.

Rwanda Eco-Tours provided us with high quality vehicles. A sturdy Land Cruiser safari car with pop-up roof for our days in Akagera, and a more compact and convenient Land Cruiser Prado for the rest of the trip.

I was fortunate enough to travel through Rwanda for several weeks with Rwanda Ecotours. It was truly the experience of a lifetime. I used to work in the ecotourism sector and so have a high bar when it comes to such experiences and I have to say that Rwanda Ecotours exceeded my expectations. While this page highlights the company’s gorilla trekking experience, I also traveled to Nyungwe National Park, Akagera National Park, and spent several days in Kigali with them (in addition to visiting the golden monkeys and gorillas in Volcanoes National Park). While our gorilla encounter was of course incredible, I definitely suggest that travelers explore these other regions as well. Rwanda Ecotours will certainly provide you with an unforgettable experience! Highlights included searching out iridescent sunbirds in Nyungwe with top birding guide Claver, tracking chimps and colobus monkeys in forest fragments around Nyungwe, camping under the stars in Akagera (and seeing nearly 100 species of birds in only 2 days!), and bargaining for colorful fabrics at the Kimironko Market in Kigali. Our guide, Yasin, was one of the best guides I’ve had in my travels. He always arrived early with a huge smile no matter the hour and his driving skills are unmatched. He nimbly navigated around traffic jams down tiny backroads, always ensuring we arrived on time, and never once did I feel unsafe. He was also extremely knowledgeable about both Rwandan wildlife and the country’s fascinating (and turbulent) history and was thrilled to share this with us. Moreover, he was always up-to-date on the constantly changing COVID regulations and made sure we could travel throughout the country (and eventually exit) without any problems. This was no easy feat! Finally, Rwanda Ecotours is owned and run by Rwandans, so you can feel good knowing that your tourism dollars are going directly back to the Rwandan people!

After our original trip to the gorillas was cancelled due to border closure in the DRC we stumbled upon Fred’s office in Kigali.
We had one week in Rwanda and Fred made sure we got the most out of our trip - every detail was covered and we could not have asked for a better week!
Baptise was our guide and he made sure we were looked after in every way throughout our trip from the gorillas, volcano hike and Akagera national park.
Can not thank both of them enough we will not forget this trip. Great hospitality all around! Highly recommend!!

I just returned from an 18 day trip to Rwanda using Rwanda Eco-Tours. I cannot say enough good things about the company and the country. I started planning the trip with Fred a year ago, and he was fantastic in planning the exact sort of trip we wanted. He listed to what we liked, and came back with an itinerary that suited us perfectly. We trekked, hiked, canoed, kayaked, went on safari and immersed ourselves in Rwandan culture. Our guide for the 18 days for Baptiste, and we absolutely love him. 18 days is a lot of "together" time with a guide, but Baptiste was interesting, so fun to be with, engaging, patient and kind. Plus, he appeared to know everyone in Rwanda, which was hilarious. The trip went off without a hitch. Everything went smoothly and perfectly. I was completely impressed and satisfied.

Rwanda itself is a spectacular and special country. The landscape is beyond incredible, it is spotlessly clean, it is safe and the people are a true delight. We have travelled all over the world, but there is no other country that has it all like Rwanda does. Truly, that country and its people have changed me forever. I hate the phrase "once in a lifetime trip", but it is really the only phrase you can use about Rwanda. If you want to go, do yourself a favour and use Rwanda Eco-Tours. You will definitely not be disappointed.

A great non-profit organization that aims at improving lives of reformed poachers & communities around Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. The marriage ceremonies, the traditional dances and insights on Rwanda's culture are the highlights of anyone's visit here. I totally recommend it, it's worth the visit.

The experience from start to finish with Osborn and the team was great. The payment method from overseas is a little unsettling but no need to be concerned everything is in order.

We had a great driver Kerim who was flexible in what we wanted to do and nothing was a problem. Our experience over the three day Safari was fantastic, meal stops great and accomodation perfect.

Highly recommend Rwanda Eco-Tours.

My husband and I, along with our daughter and her friend--both of whom are teachers in Lagos, Nigeria--booked a custom tour through Rwanda Eco-Tours. The entire experience was wonderful, start to finish. We, like many others whose reviews I've read, were a bit hesitant about the money transfers, but they worked out just fine (although the second took much longer than the first, which had nothing to do with Eco-Tours). Throughout the planning, Osborn was most responsive and informative, and so was Jane when money issues were involved.

When we arrived in Kigali, we were met by Yasin, who was our guide and driver throughout the tour. Yasin welcomed us as friends; by the time we departed for home we felt as though we'd gained a new family member. Yasin was endlessly gracious, patient and accommodating. His knowledge is vast: we were never left to wonder what we would see or why we were going where we did. We learned an enormous amount from Yasin. He is a true gift to Eco-Tours, as he was to us and would be to any travelers fortunate enough to have him as a guide.

Our itinerary was brilliantly planned, and included Akagera National Park (for a game drive and boat ride), a chimp trek in Nyungwe National Park and (of course) a gorilla trek in Virunga Volcanoes National Park and a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village (Iby'iwacu Cultural Village). Naturally, we made numerous stops along the way to each park to visit attractions such as the King's Palace, village cooperatives and a historical museum. We also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which was something that we would not have wanted to miss but that was difficult to experience nonetheless. Accommodations throughout were very good. Unfortunately, we were unable to stay at the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge as planned because they'd had some water damage that involved our rooms. However, the substitute accommodations were beautiful, so we will just have to visit the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge the next time around.

In Akagera National Park, we were accompanied by Bosco, a park guide and ranger who was marvelous. The game drive was quite long, and involved some travel over pretty rough roads, but it was well worth it. We saw zebras, impalas, elephants, hippos, baboons, and lions--just to name a few! Seeing animals where they belong and where they are obviously happiest and most comfortable is an amazing experience. We only saw one giraffe, and only from quite a distance--but that was an accident of timing. And the next morning, before leaving the park, Yasin stopped at the visitor's center to see if any of the rangers knew whether the Park's giraffes were roaming in an area that we could reasonably access before our trip back to Kigali. Unfortunately the giraffes were not being terribly accommodating that morning--but it was their home, and we were guests, so we left with the thought that we'll see them next time.

We arrived at Nyungwe National Park in time for two of the four in our group to take the canopy walk. My husband and I opted out because I have a problem with vertigo. Our daughter and her friend thoroughly enjoyed the walk, though they said that the hike down to the canopy was bit strenuous. But they said that the view was wonderful. While they were gone, my husband and I went to the visitor's center, which was very informative, and took a short walk on the park road. We saw some monkeys and birds and enjoyed the views of the park.

The chimp trek the next day was great, though again the hike was a bit strenuous. One tip I'd give to travelers is to hire porters to carry backpacks and help in the harder areas of any of the treks. To begin with, not having to carry the backpack myself was nice, even though it wasn't particularly heavy. But the main reason to do this--more great information from Yasin--is that the porters, as well as most of the guides and trackers that we met on our various trips are former poachers who now support themselves and their families by the activities in which they're now involved. So hiring these people--and tipping them--is a great way to support their efforts to earn money by legal activities, as well as to help communities throughout Rwanda. In any case, once we located the chimps we were in their territory for an hour (which is the limit), and it was great to see them playing in the trees, grooming themselves, and just being chimps.

Based on the difficulty level of the chimp trek, we elected to take the easy-medium gorilla trek. It was quite a difficult hike, through farm land, then forest (including some bamboo forest, which was lovely), and bush (which was quite difficult). Thank goodness for the guides and porters! We had walking sticks, and the porters carried our backpacks, but the hike was still very strenuous. That said, it was absolutely worth the effort. We trekked the Hirwa (translation: Lucky) Group, and being able to sit among them and watch the youngsters (including a six-month-old baby) play was absolute magic. Once again, we were limited to one hour; we'd have loved to stay all day. The gorillas were as curious about us as we were about them. Interesting thing: before setting out, the guides told us about two sounds that we should make--one if a gorilla is coming close (which they don't want mainly because of the possibility of disease transmission either way), and the other to indicate that we are friendly. While we were with the gorillas, one of the trackers would make the "friendly" sound every few minutes--and the Silverback would respond with the same sound. All in all an amazing experience.

The Gorilla Guardians Village experience is not to be missed. One of the great things about Eco-Tours is that a portion of the price for each tour goes to the purchase of a goat, which is given to a Village resident. There were four of us on the tour, so we gave four goats to Village residents. Those who reside in Gorilla Guardians Village and present the cultural events--as well as develop the crafts that are available to buy there--are also former poachers. So once again, Eco-Tours--who our guide at the Village referred to as "the backbone" of the Village--has found ways to support the community and reduce the poaching activities that were decimating the gorilla population.

Possibly the greatest honor of our visit was that we were able to meet with Edwin Sabuhoro, the founder of Rwanda Eco-Tours. Once again, Yasin went far beyond anything that we could have possibly hoped for, and arranged a visit with Edwin before we headed to the airport for our flights home. What an honor it was to meet Edwin, who was so gracious and such a fascinating person to listen to. I only wish we could have spent hours talking to him. I hope that we'll be able to meet him again in the future. I truly believe that he will become known world-wide for what he has already accomplished in the area of gorilla conservation--and, no doubt, for what he will accomplish in the future.

After so many words, all I have left to say is that if you're considering a trip to Rwanda please do yourself a favor and look at Rwanda Eco-Tours. Rwanda is a remarkable country, from which the world could learn great lessons if people would listen. Rwanda Eco-Tours will give you the experience you should have in visiting such an exceptional place. I cannot thank the Rwanda Eco-Tours staff enough for opening my eyes to a place that I will visit again.

I recently enjoyed a 12-day itinerary with Rwanda Eco-Tours and can't recommend this tour company highly enough. Osborne responded to all of my emails on the same day, answered all of my questions in great detail and helped me customise my final itinerary. My guide - Yasin - was extremely knowledgeable, provided me with the ideal balance between 'guided' and 'independent' time and went out of his to accommodate my interest in photography. Above all, I chose this company because of their commitment to supporting the communities we visit and this was clearly evident throughout the trip. The itinerary was well-balanced with great accommodation options. TIP: If you're budget allows it, stay at Nyungwe Forest Lodge - an incredible place! Thanks everyone at Rwanda Eco-Tours - I'll definitely book through you again on my next visit to Rwanda!

We had an amazing experience with Rwanda Eco-Tours. They did an excellent job & everything exceeded our expectations. Like many we were a little weary of doing the bank transfer for the deposit but it was all legit and we had no issues. We choose them like most people because of their commitment to helping the local community, as well as the gorillas. The cultural village is not to be missed and the goats for gorillas exchange was truly as special & powerful experience as seeing the gorillas themselves. Knowledgable guides made our drives a great educational experience answering our questions and sharing about local life.

We selected this agency because of their support to the local community , fast and through response to our queries overall.
Driver was good, informative and helpful.

They Organised the gorilla trek and the overnight stay at Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village
Which we highly recommend to get a better deeper understanding of their way of life through song dance and interactive discussions and allow them to also find out more about us - good cultural exchange.
More importantly this provides a sustainable form of income for those who used to be poachers.

They just need to fully communicate the full board arrangement as the driver, village and hotel didn't seem to be aware and we had to spend time going back and forth during the trip to reconfirm.

Overall it's highly recommended.
