We decided to go paragliding on our next day off on Monday 23 Jan, so when we scheduled 2 weeks out it was no problem.

We assumed we would be jumping off South Mountain as shown on the advertisement. The evening before however, Carlos called to reschedule from 7am to 9am which we readily agreed to. Before I went to bed, I clicked on the link in the email (that he sent when we first scheduled) to double check the instructions. I then discovered it was in Casa Grande. Personally, if I was changing the location from South Mountain to Casa Grande, I would mention that rather prominently in the email.

The next morning we showed up at 8:55 in the SW field just at I-10 at McCartney Rd in Casa Grande. Carlos was up in the air with the 2nd of a group of 3 young ladies.

At 9:30 my wife was up and off into the wild blue yonder to the east. After about 7-8 minutes I could barely see them. My wife says it was fun, but not too much more exciting than a balloon ride UNTIL the way back. On the way back he dips down low and does a little Nap Of the Earth flying which makes it a lot of fun. The rides vary from 15-20 minutes.

Then it came my turn. When you are over 200lbs, he needs an opposing wind of at least 12-16 mph. It was only 1-3 mph. After 5-10 minutes we packed it up and headed to South Mountain.

Carlos dropped off the motorized paraglider on the way and picked up the tandem chute. We then staged our vehicle at the bottom of S Mountain where my wife waited with her camera.

Carlos said it was a 15 minute drive to get up the mountain. To make a long story short, I suggested twice that my wife drive us up so we would not have to drive up again. Carlos said it doesn’t really matter. I assumed I did not understand how things work. Thanks to my poor hearing and his accent, I discovered after 15 minutes that 15 is 50. He then agreed that my wife should have driven us. My outside voice said Yep! My inside voice said “#$)&*!$+#*($#@*&!!

So almost exactly 50 minutes later we get to the top. Other folks he knows are getting ready to paraglide and hanglide off. It took about 5-7 minutes to prepare and about 10 minutes to try and position right and launch.

We finally take off and it is awesome. The ride was just under 5 minutes. It was overcast at the time and so there was no heat to help keep us aloft longer. We just glided smoothly high in the air, back and forth from one side of the canyon to the other all the way down. The landing was a bit rough. You have to hit the ground running. Carlos set us up perfect, but I was so zealous to run and not fall that I was running before we even touched ground. It threw me off and after 10 feet I tripped and we ate it. Nothing bad though since the canopy was still pulling our weight back.

I’ll take a 5 minute free-fall glide off S Mountain over 20 minutes in the motorized paraglider any day.

FEAR FACTOR: I offer this to help you determine if this will be more fun than fear. My fear of heights is probably about average relative to others. Before taking off I was thinking about how much I would rather be at home relaxing in front of the TV and why am I doing this. Too late now. Upon taking off, the wind bobbed us up and down a little for the first 10-15 seconds until we smoothed out, and for which I was somewhat uncomfortable. But then every moment thereafter was exhilarating. Then I thought what a complete idiot I would be if I were watching TV instead of doing this today.

I don’t care for roller coasters, but I will ride them now and then. I do not like getting dizzy AT ALL! Total, complete wimp on anything that goes in circles. I have always wanted to sky-dive, but I have never had the guts, and I don’t know if I ever will. So if you are wimpier than me, perhaps you may prefer the motorized version. Regardless, do either version at least once. It is awesome.

NEGAVITES:

This all finished up about 3:30pm. Our plans for the afternoon (after our 9am appointment) were obliterated. Normally, when they SCHEDULE people on S Mountain, the people who are scheduled second and third take Carlos and Ryan back up the mountain. At the end, they take one of their own cars to pick up the other’s vehicle so you only have to drive up once to launch. In our case there was only Carlos.

Casa Grande: When we purchased the flights, it was for paragliding off S Mountain, not for a motorized paragliding. They cannot control the weather and therefore cannot guarantee conditions will be right for either free-flight or motorized paragliding. But if our choice is not doable, then we should have been given the opportunity to reschedule. Not switched.

Nonetheless, despite the lengthy day and two 50 minute trips up S Mountain, it was still very fun.
