This is a hidden gem of a place. WOW! When we come again, we will stay for half a day. Pack a backpack of food (lunch or picnic), and bring a towel and suit. You could easily spend an entire morning here. The walk is easy to the beach and if you come at the right time, you can cross to the island at low tide. We walked the island on the rocks and enjoyed this beautiful place. Comfortable shoes make it nice, but it is not a strenuous hike for 95% of people. It’s a mostly flat and easy walk.

This is a great starter trail to the ones in Acadia so I recommend making this your first stop before heading to Bar Harbor. It's about 2 miles round trip and its worth every footstep. This trail is a good tester trail with your kids to see how they handle hiking in Acadia. If they can't do this, tell them to just enjoy the overlooks in the National Park. Will definitely come back and try the low tide walk next time. Wear comfortable shoes!

We were spending the weekend at the nearby Aragosta Lodge and stumbled into the Barred Island walking path which leads down to the shore line, island and sand bar. I'd been to the lodge previously so was familiar with Barred Island itself, but not the mile long pathway that leads down from the parking area. This is a gorgeous pine forest laden with moss and lichen carpets everywhere you look. Truly spectacular. The pathway itself is relatively flat, laden with tree roots and an easy stroll although you do have to watch your step given the extensive roots protruding along the route. I imagine they might be a tad slippery in a light rain of misty fog. We happened to be walking during a long dry patch in mid August so the walk was easy.
Once down to the shore, you are greeted by the spectacular granite rock coast that Maine is famous for. Glacial erratics line the shore. The sand bar over to Barred Island appears as the tide recedes which makes for an easy walk across to explore the small island. It's worth wandering around the backside of the island as the granite formations on the islands south/westerly side are the most spectacular.

Yes, as the title says, 30 years ago, we were not as smart as we are now. My husband and I hiked to Barred Island. We found a spot on the far side of the island to relax and enjoy. We did not realize the piece about the timing. Young adventurous us, we waded through five feet of water to get back to the main land! At that time, I don't believe we took the lovely hike that meanders through the preserve. I don't think it existed back then.

Fast forward to 2020, we parked in the designated areas. We were sure to time our visit around low tide. We enjoyed the trail immensely. It is very well maintained and takes one through a very sweet forest. We spent a good hour or so on the island and even had time to rest on the sandbar before we ventured back. This time, we were dry. (Yes, there was a little voice in us that wanted to stay and relive that memory!) Have fun and be safe!

Make sure you visit at low tide so you can stay on the sand bar! The hike is not strenuous per se but is a doozy on a hot day. Make sure to wear sneakers as there are many tree roots on the trails. The prize at the end of the hike is worth it- a beautiful beach and island and clean water. We swam because we are super brave but it is quite cold! We aren’t used to Maine ocean water I suppose.

We went at low tide so we could explore the island. The wooded mossy areas were actually the best part. The trail is well marked and only moderately difficult. The trail is mostly over tree roots

We went closer to high tide, so had the preserve pretty much to ourselves. While we couldn't walk to the island, the walk itself and area across from the island were worth it. As others have said, the roots do make the walk harder than it appears. However, our 3 year old had very few problems with the walk - though I did carry him on some small sections because of drop offs or excessive roots.

We definitely enjoyed the walk and little beach at the end(really little).

In regards to the parking, there are now two parking areas. We parked in the first one we encountered, which seems to be new and larger than the one many have mentioned. You get a bonus stroll through the woods from this first parking area.

walk ends at the coastal rocky shore. It was about 1.3 mi walk in. This was really hard to find. no signage off of 15A out of Stonington. You must turn left at Goose cove rd.

It's a short, rooty (watch your step) one mile in and out trail, with optional loop at end, through fog-enveloped (spanish moss on trees closer and closer to water) woods hanging on to bald rock. We've walked it twice and will return. Need to catch the tide near low to walk across sandbar to Barred Island. Great views of Maine ocean coast without having to share with many of the Touron Hordes. Having grown up on MDI and it having too many tourists, now, I bring visiting folks to Stonington-Deer Isle area to give them the unspoiled Maine Coast and no one has not been wowed, even those who also have been to MDI. We have 3500 miles of coastline, there is enough for everyone, if we spread out!
