I have never seen a more heavily used, well maintained, amenity-rich state park in my life. You get used to seeing state parks that look like they were built 70 years ago and abandoned. Almost every aspect of this park was being heavily used on a beautiful summer day and everyone seemed happy. Heavy use of the beach, store and food stand, kayaks and boats, camping, trail, and numerous huge family gatherings. The whole park echoed with the sound of laughing children. It was frankly remarkable. The easy trail around the lake was a pretty hike. Don't come here for seclusion, but every other kind of recreation seems well represented. We also had a couple slices of decent pizza and some lemonade after finishing our walk.

We took the popup camper for a weekend--we were in site 188 in camping Area B. The road was a bit narrow but the approach was wide enough to get the camper backed in. Note that, if you're coming in from Richmond Ln., the sign points to the left for "Camping" but the next sign points to the right for "Overnight Areas"--that means camping. We definitely prefer Area B--the sites are a bit more spread out and you don't have to walk far for a shower. We walked around Area A and the sites seemed a little close and it was very, very hilly and a long walk to the beach. The beach is an easy walk or bike ride from Area B along the Lakeside trail. The bath houses were very clean, though the showers have those valves where you have to keep pushing the button, and the water was pretty hot. There were plenty of fresh water faucets and dumpsters around each camping area. My wife needs flat hiking trails and they've got several. (Get a trail map from the Park Office.) The beach area was very busy on Saturday but less so on Friday. We had a great time and can't wait to get back.

Went to enjoy being outdoors but with Covid all sites near bathrooms were taken so had to drive to use restroom multiple times a day. That being said, the restrooms were very clean and the wood shed at Host site was well stocked. The wood is dryish but still spits lots of sap when it burns. However if you aren't from PA you cannot bring in wood because of various invasive bugs that are destroying forests so not much choice. Most electric sites are geared toward camper and RVs so uncomfortable for tents, like ours, but non-electric sites have some have grassy area or smaller gravel for tent pitching. Even with all the sites, many close together, campers were very considerate of one another and noise was minimal. Cars and trucks kept to slow 10-15 MPH posted speed limits and parents kept kids under control. Very lovely campground. We were in Area A but went to check out Area B which is closer to the water and will try that side next time. Not all bathrooms have showers but all shower rooms/bath houses have toilets in them. Loads of water faucets through out campground. Some sites offer pet camping but double check, and there is cabin camping as well. "Church" offered on Sunday's at 10 am in amphitheater by the lake and 2 programs on Saturdays for those who aren't into relaxing in the woods. Sites come with picnic table and fire ring with attached adjustable cooking grill.

Went camping with my 3 year old son for the first time. I was very nervous for his first time camping. I couldn’t have picked a better place to go. So many things to do and everything was very clean. The bathrooms and showers were cleaned every day and they were so close. A lot of hiking trails with a nice lake area for kids. I would recommend anyone with kids to come here. Also unlike Maryland state parks you can throw away your trash in the trash bins here. I’m Maryland you have to take your trash with you. Very minor detail but was really nice!

I booked a dog friendly campsite (#014 on Campground A) for part of Labor Day Weekend 2020 after reading reviews about spacious and private grounds even during busy times. This could not be further from the truth. My partner and I could not speak above a whisper without our neighbors overhearing. Through no fault of their own, their firepit was within 10 feet from where we could park or set up our tent, smoke billowing into our site and inescapable. Forget social distancing even when trying to stay in your own area. I'm not sure who would feel comfortable (much less happy) hanging out here even if we were not in the middle of a pandemic. The site allows 6 people and I'm not sure how that is possible. As two of us and a medium sized dog felt cramped. I explained my discomfort with the ranger, who was kind and offered site #092 in Campground A as an alternative. It offered slightly more space but was at a cross road across from a dumpster, so it had potentially even less privacy if that's possible. I noticed people using unoccupied neighboring sites for cornhole to spread out -- that's how tight it was. I was grossed out thinking about how many people would be sharing the washrooms.
The grounds on the lake seemed lovely but were ruined by so many people (and I say that living in a city!) There were swarms of people no matter which way we looked. I understand we came during a very busy weekend, but even if the park operated campsites at 50% capacity, it would not feel like the the quiet getaway we were expecting. We wound up turning the car around and going home.

We did a fantastic hike from the Geyer Trail up to Big Mountain on the Tuscarora Trail (blue marker) - round trip 6.7 miles. The full hike from the lake is near 9 miles round trip. Geyer (white marker) has an initial 0.6 mile very steep ascent then once on the Tuscarora it levels off. Totally safe for kids...
The lookout on Big Mountain is spectacular (you can also drive up). The lake is a great spot for a picnic - lots of outdoor activities as well.

We visited the lake during a camping trip in 2007. It was lovely. This year we left the home early in the hopes of spending a wonderful day at the lake.
We arrived around 7a.m There were maybe 4 families already there. Plenty of parking. We parked and decided to look around.
As we walked towards the lake, my friend noticed geese feces scattered throughout the grass, sand and walkway. There was no way we could have put our gear on this unclean area. Every one or two steps you could see the waste.
Needles to say, we went back to the vehicle and left. Management need to be a better job at cleaning this park. This summer, we went to Cunningham falls state park and Greenbrier State park and both were clean. No feces around.

We camped here this past weekend and enjoyed it very much. The staff was very friendly, the bathrooms were very clean and the sites were nice. We wished there were more camp sites closer to the water. We enjoyed riding our bikes on the path that goes around the lake. We are looking forward to visiting again!

We went camping with family last week, and we had a great time. My kids had never been camping in a tent before, but this was the perfect place for them to try it out. There was a lighted building with bathrooms and showers very close to our campsite, so they didn't have to be quite so scared. Even with that lighted building, you only had to go a little bit away to have complete darkness and an amazing view of the stars. It was about as perfect a camping trip as you can get: swimming, paddle boating, building a fire, roasting s'mores, chasing fireflies, hiking around the lake, and watching the stars from the path on the dam.

We stayed at Cowans Gap State Park June 21-23, 2019. It was our first time at t his park and we will definately go back. Our camp site was #130 in area A. Most of the sites accommodate small campers or tents and are very close together. Site #130 was a little excluded and nice to have privacy, although we could hear the noise of children, dogs, etc in the lower sites. We decided the next time we go we are gong to stay in Area B, across the lake. It seems more quieter, less families, etc. The beach was very nice and clean. So was the water. Parking fills up quickly as this is a state park and not just the campers can enjoy the beach area. Anyone can come to the beach for free. They are missing an opportunity to collect money as most parks I've been to like this you pay an entry fee. We visited the nature center. It had a lot of interesting things, but you can tell that it hasn't been updated recently. There are no live creatures, just animals that have been taxidermy. One night we sat out and watched the bat boxes at dusk when the bats were leaving the boxes. That was fascinating. The only that that I was a little disappointment in was the "camp store". It's the reason I did not give 5 stars. It's not really a typical camp store. It is a screened in walk-up window that is beside the concession stand on the beach. The minimal clothing items are hung outside on the windows and the other things in the store you can only view by looking in the window. I guess you tell the store clerk what you want and they pick it out for you. I think they are really missing the boat on this one. There weren't any clothing items with the name of the park, etc. I would have purchased one. Overall the park was very clean and we will go back.

I would like recommendations/reviews for good sites for a pop-up. Most importantly, I need to know how easy it will be to back in :)

Hello, I want more information about the layout of the rustic cabins. The description says the rustic cabin is a 3 room cabin with 2 bunk beds. I understood this to mean two bedrooms and a living area, with each bedroom having one bunk bed. How many bedrooms do the rustic cabins have? And does each bunk bed have its own bedroom? Thanks for your help.

Yes, it's two bedrooms and a living area, with one set of bunk beds in each room. The walls that separate the bedrooms from the living area, and from each other, don't go the whole way up to the ceiling--there's about a 3-foot gap. I think this is so that the wood stove in the main room can reach the bedrooms.
I'm about 99% sure that the Cowan's Gap cabins all have this same layout--I've only been inside a couple of them, but they all look the same from the outside. Some cabins in other parks have different layouts.
What are the prices for camping?
