The Warrumbungles is one of Australia's most spectacular national parks, with views that are of international standard.
I spent four days bush-walking, completing Belougery Split Rock, Grand High Tops & The Breadknife, Bluff Mountain, and Gould's Circuit. The photo opportunities are endless, but you really have to experience the park's grandeur first-hand to appreciate it.
I thoroughly recommend visiting the Warrumbungles. You'll want to return.

Great drive and lovely views. Tara cave is a good walk starting from little bbq area. Lots of interesting signs about bush craft.

Amazing natural wonder and so worth the climb to the top for views over the region. Very hot day so take plenty of water and be prepared for lots of steps going up well maintained paths when doing the High Tops and Breadknife Circuit

There’s a lot of walking tracks, easy up to challenging, lookouts, camping, lookouts etc - lots to see and experience. Try the first lookout, an easy 500metre walk to spectacular views of the mountain skyline.

Visited Warrumbungles over 2 days in August.
Walked up from the carpark to the peak of Bluff Mountain.
Did the circular walk which all up was about 16km and about 6 hours. I am reasonably fit.
Spectacular walk and highly recommended. The additional trek up to Bluff Mountain peak is well worth the effort. You need to be reasonably fit to do it, however it is pretty safe with no difficult rock scrambling.
Also did the Split rock circular walk which was terrific. Did not climb the last 400 metres to the summit. Did attempt about the first 30 metres however it is a bit dangerous and only recommended for experienced, fit hikers and not solo hikers like me.
Did the Whitegum walk which is easy and well worth it. Great views at the end.
The Tara cave walk is nice and worth the 1 hour return trip.
Overall the Warrumbungles are spectacular and I hope to return one day.

Great area to visit, the majestic landscape is eye watering. Plenty of areas to camp with great facilities. Information centre is a must do. A visit to the Siding Springs Observatory is a must, do the tour which is great you also get a greAt panoramic view of the landscape.

Love the warrumbungles, stunning national park, best hiking in NSW, the views across the remains of this volcanic region, contrasting with flat surroundings is stunning. Then the real magic begins when the sun goes down the rest of the universe appears overhead…

We did these walks over 2 days.
Grand High Tops via Breadknife,
Whitegum lookout,
Belougery Split Rock and
Fans Horizon hikes.
Whitegums is a short unimpressive walk to a lookout with good views.
Fans Horizon was harder than we thought. We did it in middle of the day and didn't take our hiking poles. The hike has around 870 steps. It felt much longer than 1.8 km each way.
The walk itself is not impressive, but the views from the top are amazing.
The last for this day was Split Rock hike. The sign to start the walk in anti clock direction, as shown on the map at the car park, is there. The sign is for Burbie walk and then about 500 metres, there is a sign for Split Rock hike.
Therefore, we did it clock wise. I think that it would be much easier doing it anti clock wise, as the first part doing it clock wise is quite steep.
As it was hot, we decided not to go to the summit. From memory, the hike took about 2.5 hours.
The next day we did Grand High Tops via Breadknife. This was a very impressive hike. The views along the hike going up, kept getting better and better. However, the views from the summit are just amazing. I think they were one of the best views I had anywhere in Australia.
The track on the way down via Spires is not well formed and IMO not suitable for young children. It is very narrow and lots of loose stones, big and small.
It took us exactly 5 hours, but we did rush a bit on the way down as we had something else planned.
This hike is highly recommended.

In 3 days you can do a couple of the longer hikes with a rest day, maybe doing a shorter walk. That would cover most of the major things to see.
You can spend anything from half a day to a week (or more) here and enjoy it.

Is the summer heat (planning to visit in Feb) bearable for bushwalking and staying several days?

Depends on age and adaptability to heat. We wouldnt because not only heat, but also flies and mosquitoes. Having said that, if now only time can go, then would - wonderful place and the whole region filled with wonderful country towns and people (think Quirindi).

Hi,
Planning a trip to Warrumbungles and Coonabarabran region over Easter. What walking tracks are best suited for children aged 5 & 6?
Should we camp in Warrumbungles for the 3 nights and just do a day trip up to Sandstone caves or do you suggest camping near there as well?
If anyone can suggest an itinerary that would be great, covering the observatory, national park and Sandstone Caves. Or any other points of interest.

We stayed at Camp Blackman - this would be the perfect place to camp with 5 and 6 year old children. There is an easy loop track, mostly flat, from Camp Blackman which is beaut because you get good views to the sharp volcanic landscape, and you see a lot of kangaroos. The little walk to Burbie Canyon (only 2kms) is also very achievable and quite interesting. There are fantastic views to be had from Whitegum Lookout - just a short 1km walk from the car park. Another great thing to do is take the kids to Siding Springs Observatory - check the opening times - but there are some beaut hands on science based activities and a lot of inspiring information to explain to the kids in the observatory. There is a small cafe there, too, where you can get an ice cream. You cannot go there at night though - as Ian says above. The Observatory is doing real work at night.
It is fabulous to give the children the experience of “dark” in a dark park, many children do not get a real sense of this aspect of the natural world these days.
Don’t miss the NPWS Environmental Education Centre on the way in to the park. This is a new building, the original one burnt down. It has been designed to withstand bushfires, its great to look at this and talk about it. Also there are lots of interesting things inside to look at - quite a lot of stuff for sale, too. Including ice Creams!
I did not go to the Sandstone caves.
A few kilometres on the Coonabarabran side of the park, there is a fabulous cafe called Tibuc Gardens where all the food is very home made and very delicious. The cafe has an adjacent shop selling locally made art and crafts - all very beautiful.
