This did not feel like the Nutcracker, and it was frustratingly bizarre. My jaw dropped because of how silly the newly incorporated characters were. Mother Ginger is replaced by what I think was a car engine, there was a frog dancing like a stripper, the staging was 1/100th of how it previously was, and there were performers in full body, head to toe, leotards with spiky ice crowns. I can't imagine what the directors were aiming for. I would not recommend going, and I will not go back.

The facility is nice. Friendly staff, beautiful theatre, and great show. I don't like how the balcony is set up, if one person has to get up then we must get up. Overall, I had a great time and will be attending future performances.

The Nutcracker, for us, sets the mood for our Christmas Spirit. This year not so much.
The Nutcracker Ballet at the Wortham was very different than the ones that we had previously attended. We are from a different state and, possibly, this is the interpretation of the Nutcracker in Houston. It appeared to be very woke as there was no violence such as the Rat King not being stabbed, as in Nutcracker Performances that we have seen previously.
It was very disappointing to see all of the wokeness and we could not follow or recognize this interpretation from the original. Classics should never be changed. I dare not go into detail as my review may not be accepted.
We will not, in the future, support any art or any type of performances inHouston.

I’ve been attending the Nutcracker at the Wortham for the past two decades. It is ridiculous enough that the audience is required to wear masks that do nothing to protect anyone from Covid; but the majority of the performers were required to wear them while on stage. Seriously, it was like watching a bunch of expressionless unics. Enough already. Catch up to the science and let’s move on.

Having seen the Nutcracker many times over the years, I found this presentation to be one of the best! The artistry, costumes, scenery and music were outstanding. My six-year-old granddaughter was enthralled with all the sights and sounds. The only drawbacks were the length (a little too long) and abrupt ending. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable Christmas treat!

While the venue is a very nice one, this review is purely related to that of the Nutcracker Ballet itself. As a family who has attended this ballet 11 of the last 15 years, imagine our shock and horror after arriving and realizing that the ENTIRE performance had been changed since we last attended in 2015. We found this new performance to be hard to follow and lacking in the same classic qualities.
The newer set is one level instead of two, so when adding many more people on to the stage, it looked cluttered and often distracting much of the time. The new performance is also filled with random children coming onto the stage at different points for what seemed for no other purpose than “oohhh and ahhh” moments. There also is an obvious attempt for inclusiveness and political correctness in this new version, unnecessarily. I could go on and on, but in the end, you no longer feel like you are in a dreamlike state with Clara, drifting from 1 glorious scene to another. Instead, it’s a overstimulating smorgasbord. It even seemed like they drew inspiration from Game of Thrones, as some of the dancers with the Ice Princess resembled the Night King.
If you’ve never attended the previous performance, then you may enjoy this as you will have nothing to compare it to. However if you have, I can’t imagine that you’d feel much differently. Leaving the theatre, we overheard much of the same rhetoric from different groups, so I felt somewhat vindicated that I wasn’t being overly sensitive and nostalgic.
There was a sense of comfort and great joy by attending this year after year. This was a classic ballet that should NOT have been altered so completely. If they theater wanted to try some thing so extreme in contrast, they could have written a new ballet and left this beautiful classic alone. It really is a tragedy and sadly we will not attend another Nutcracker performance with the Houston Ballet again. It certainly was NOT worth the $500+ price tag for a family of 4.

We attended the Sunday afternoon ballet performance of the “Merry Widow” and had a great time. The sets and costumes were amazing as was the choreography and music. I’m not a ballet or dance type of person, but the dancers seemed very talented. The newly-renovated Wortham Center is a first-class performance hall. It is very accessible with nearby parking, reasonably priced admission, and is managed by an excellent staff. I disagree with another post that said the seats were uncomfortable with not enough legroom. I have attended performances (ballets, plays, operas) in various venues in Houston, New York, Paris, London, and Madrid, and I find the seating in the Wortham Center is more spacious than most. We have always sat on the lower level but would love to try the seats in the upper-level boxes. Give it a try and I think you will be surprised and glad you did. Earlier in the season, we saw “Robbins,” which was also very enjoyable and informative.

After Hurricane Harvey's flooding, this place has been transformed and screams ARTS as usually. It's still elegance and beauty.

We went to see the Houston Ballet perform Marie, which was very well done. This was my first time going to the Wortham Center, and I was so impressed by the exquisite architecture, the soaring ceilings and beautiful arched windows that look out on some of the city's most beautiful buildings. There are drinks and snacks available before the show, and you can park underground and walk through a tunnel to get to the building without getting wet if it rains! While I enjoyed the ballet, I have to say that I loved just being in the Wortham and admiring the beautiful architecture! Highly recommend!

Are front row seats at the Wortham Center (Brown theatre) good seats for myself and my 7 year old daughter?

Which is better seat option orchestra or Grand tier for a family with 3yr and 6yr? Any help would be great.
Thanks

This may be a bit late for you, but I will always recommend the Orchestra seating except in the case of having little ones if for the only reason being the expense of the seats and what a shame it would be to miss the performance for a pottybreak or an untimely meltdown because once you leave for any reason you can not re-enter until intermission is over.
We sat in the Grand Tier when the kiddos were younger and 2 of the 10 times we've taker her, we've had to watch the remainder of the performance in the viewing room - not the same, but it comes with the territory or having small children.
When they can manage siting for an hour virtually uninterupted, then Ochestra - here you come. There are always little ones when we see the Nutcracker at Orchestra level so that's not really an issue. I just never want to spend $90 per seat to have to watch a portion of the performance in the viewing room bacause my little one decided during the show was a good time to go potty or need a drink or etc....
Hope this helps!
