As a National Historic Site, the van Buren house offers free guided tours (the only way you can get inside). The exterior grounds are also pleasant, with historical markers explaining key points of the van Burens' time there. Make sure the site is open and offering tours when you plan your visit, to avoid possibly disappointment.

This is a nice site about a not very well known president. The informative guided tour that takes about an hour. The house has some original furnishings. President Van Buren bought the house and farmed the surrounding acreage. Amazingly, a good amount of the original site is still open space and not developed. Our guide said the National Parks service first concentrated on restoring the building, and next will start planting different varieties of apples in the surrounding land.
I didn't know that Van Buren was the first President born as an American citizen. Also, he is the only President who did not speak English as his first language, but rather Dutch. The site is FREE but you are supposed to stop and register for a tour. Tours are on the hour. There are picnic tables so bring a lunch with you,

Decent house tour options but the people running this place could do better. You can take either a 45 minute tour of the entire house or a 30 minute tour of the downstairs only. Both are free. We took the 45 minute tour and it took about 50 minutes. The guide was easy to understand and knew her stuff but didn't have time to get into the deep historic stuff. Would have benefited from a longer tour option. The tour ends at the gift shop. There's a self guided tour around the outside of the house from sign to sign that takes about 30 minutes if you have some time to kill before your tour. There's no introductory film, they say because the old film needs "updating" (wokeifying?) but we wondered why they didn't just show the old film until the new one is ready. Do not even think about taking the Kinderhook Dutch Farming Heritage Trail up to the Dutch homestead. It's starts OK but about halfway there it degenerates into an unmaintained trail through thick tall briars and a mosquito-infested swampy area. And when I say mosquito-infested I mean heavy mosquitos along the trail and at the Dutch homestead which has a large algae covered pond right in front of it. The excuse for not maintaining the trail was lack of staffing but there were plenty of rangers sitting around under the reception tent in the shade.

The Martin van Buren House is a very interesting look at our President's life and the home he occupied when he left office. The house had been sold by the family so most of the rooms are filled with period pieces but the family has donated back to the house some of the furnishings.

The Dining Room is one of the rooms that is most like when the family lived there. Each room is a glimpse on what life was like in the mid-1800's when the extended family was working and doing business there.

Part of the house is under restoration right now so there is work being done. The park rangers give wonderful tours of the home and grounds and the best part is the tour is free being a National Park. It is well worth the visit and remember to stop in Kinderhook for the afternoon. It is a great little town.

High two, low three stars. There's no overview movie in the Visitor Center which would have been nice, seeing a look at the life of Van Buren. Instead, there's a timeline with events during his lifetime, some unigrids, bathrooms, and photos of Van Buren and some of his family. That's it. No bookstore either. The passport stamps and Junior Ranger materials are outside at a Ranger-staffed tent. Otherwise, the site is easy to find, located right off a main road.

An interesting historical tidbit. This historic site includes Van Buren’s “gentleman’s farm” and estate called Lindenwald. He bought the estate later in his life in 1839. Washington Irving (the famous author) was a notable long-term guest at Lindenwald.

Fee: Free

Tip: if you want to tour the historic house, budget at least 2 hours because you might show up while a tour is in progress and need to wait for the next tour.

Martin Van Buren farmed the property and entertained guests at this property. Van Buren hoped to be a political influencer and regain the presidency. The tour was very informative and the house was lovely. Lots of history..

We have visited over 160 various NPS Sites and each one is fascinating in its own way. The home of Martin van Buren was no exception. While waiting for our tour, we walked the grounds and learned interesting information about history and trees on the property. The ranger, Melissa, was excellent. A must see

Grew up hearing that President Van Buren was related to me via the Maternal side and through the lovely spit test on Ancestry ~ the Answer is YES! Since Van Buren's Home (used during his post presidential years) is only 30 mins away from the capital district we decided to visit for the first time as a day trip.

The parking here is free (plenty) the information desk is under a tent right next to the parking lot and the 1 hour tour is also free. The tour starts outside where you learn the history of the house it's self and how Martin was childhood friends with the original builder/owners ~ which lead him to want to house when he was looking for homes when he knew his time in the Whitehouse was nearing it's end.

Dillon (our awesome tour guide) had us enter the side door where the newer addition was added and head up stairs ~ a wide open area with 4.5 bedrooms. Next head to the basement and see the governess room, kitchen, laundry room and small dining room. Finally the main floor a larger dining room where the main staircase used to be with large hand painted wallpaper. There is also the informal and formal rooms, office and a guest bedroom, plus smiths room and bathroom (crazy bath tub) in the new addition. *note you can NOT go up the tower that is a part of the new addition.

Besides the tour ~ there is lots of trail on and near the estate. Also about 2 miles away following 9h (north) then turn left onto 21 you will se a marker on the left hand side right after the bridge is a marker indicating where Van Buren's birthplace was (burned down) and keep going another mile right after the main st. intersection is Kinderhook Dutch Reformed Cemetery and on the right is Van Buren's finally resting place.

This was a last minute stop on our visit to the area to see historical sites, and we are so glad we came. The home is absolutely lovely, and our ranger guide, Matthew, was incredible. He is extremely knowledgeable and made Van Buren come alive for us. Not only did he share interesting details about the home, but he explained Van Buren’s political contributions as well. Make sure to notice the molding around the doors and ask Matthew to tell the story about the molding around one of the doorways on the main floor that gave Van Buren a subtle way to talk about some of his political achievements.
Highly recommend visiting!!
