There is a reason this is consistently highly rated. It is very well organized and has incredible humans running the show. Our time today, with Kat guiding the experience, and Captain Eddie at the helm, literally steering us in the right direction, was efficient and created a lifetime memory. I want to return and do this again with my college-age kids.
There are many operators to choose from, and we chose to pay a bit more to be in a smaller group, as it is really important to just have one or two people along with the guide while swimming with the whale shark. The shark is generally always moving forward, so your job when it’s your turn is to stay alongside it and keep up with him (they are typically males). By having just the two of us in the water, we could both clearly see him and keep up.
Today, on our way out we saw some humpback whales and Kat and Eddie took some time so we could watch them, and we learned about them, then on our way back we found a pod of dolphins, and we were able to spend a bit of time amongst them, looking at the mamas and babies and adults in the pod. It was so fabulous.
Kat’s knowledge of whale sharks and marine mammals is extensive and we learned so much in our short time. Also, VIP Tours has a water cooler on board and reusable cups, so the company puts its eco-mindedness into tangible practice. The wet suits were thick and in great condition, and the quality masks and snorkels were welcome.
This is a women-owned business and Captain Eddie was raised in La Paz, now raising his own family in the area. Those things matter to me. I hope you choose to give your business to them and support such passionate people. We are so grateful we did. Remember to tip your guides! :)

This trip- swimming with Whale Sharks was on my bucket list. La Paz VIP exceeded my expectations! What I like to most about it was that they only take small groups out. So it was my immediate family of four (2teenage boys) with one other couple. We had a boat driver/captain and tour guide. They both were amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable. We saw not one but two whale sharks, and got to swim with them. Such a special experience! Then, along the way in our boat, we saw several pods of humpback whales. Also, dolphins! Then we went out to an area where we got to see and swim with sea lions. They’re such playful, fun creatures, and I enjoyed it so much more than I would’ve expected. Midway through the day our guide, and Driver took us to the most amazing white sand beach for lunch. The food was delicious and their homemade ceviche with some of the best I’ve had. I couldn’t recommend this tour more! I hope I get to go again in the future.

What an amazing experience!! Everything was incredible! Katya was great keeping us informed up until the day of (we almost couldn't go because of the season being closed) but it opened right in time!
Angel our guide was amazing. He was incredibly knowledgeable, he did an excellent job answering questions and explaining everything to us. I had 3 chances to swim with the whale sharks because we had a small group! He did a great job keeping us AND the whale sharks safe.
Our captain was also amazing, keeping the be boat close, but a safe distance.
I honestly can't say enough good things!
And... The photos and videos after are priceless!!! Quite literally the best experience ever.

Thoroughly wonderful experience! Staff was responsible, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Everything that was promised was delivered. Favorite experiences were swimming with the sea lions (so playful!), and of course, the whale sharks. The staff did their absolute best to provide a quality experience and it showed. Even the food provided was great. Underwater photos provided by the staff at the end were excellent. Long day, but worth it!

We loved our experience with VIP Tours. Our guide, Katrin, was absolutely wonderful. She is very passionate about the conservation of the whale shark environment and protection of this endangered gentle giant. She was in the water with us at all times, to make sure that we felt comfortable and also to make sure that the whale shark was protected (took photos of us as well, which were provided to us as a digital download at no extra cost). We had a group of 5 and had numerous opportunities to swim with the whale shark. From start to finish, the tour was very professionally run, highly educational, and incredibly enjoyable.

We had a great tour. Our guide Ana and captain Fernandito were very knowledgeable and were able to find a whale shark on a day they were “hiding”
We swam with a 15 ft shark that we later found is Mamés Moustafa aka Mufassa!
He was swimming very slowly so we were able to share the water for a long time.
We were six in the boat and everyone had all the time they wanted to swim.
Ana provided videos and pics which we’ll see once we have better Wifi.
Great experience!

Seeing the Whale Sharks with Anna and Eddie was the experience of a lifetime. There were high winds in La Paz this weekend, and the marina closed for a few days, but VIPTours rearranged the schedule and found a way to make it work for us the morning before our flight home. When we had transportation issues getting to the marina VIPTours made the extra effort and picked us up at our dock for the tour.
Their were six of us and their boat was the perfect size for our group. Anna took us into the water two at a time so we could each get time with the sharks and she could help us when needed. We saw larger boats going out and found they would send out up to five people at a time, that's not quality time with the sharks in my opinion. VIP's equipment was top notch and in great condition with what looked like almost new masks, snorkels, and wetsuits. The wetsuits were full length too, not shorties like we saw some others wearing, much appreciated on a cold January morning.
The sharks were kind of scattered about due to the recent winds, but Eddie took the extra time, and gas, to find a great spot. One of our group has severe anxiety and Anna took the time to work with them one on one to make sure they got the great experience we all had. With our small group we were all able to jump in as many times as we wanted, we went home truly tired out.
We also ran into a large Bottlenose Dolphin pod that came over to see what were doing, so we got an up close dolphin encounter too! I can't say enough about the quality of this company and the people they employ.

Anna and Eddie are professionals in every way. They respect the whale sharks in the water, the environment and the people that they had with them.
They have only two folks in the water at a time with Anna. A great way to safely do it.
I had some trouble swimming as fast as one of sharks and on the next two dives Anna helped me through.
A once in a lifetime experience.

This trip was awesome. Anna was our guide and couldn't ask for a better one. Super personable, knowledgeable and got us exactly where we needed to be for a great whale shark experience. We have been on lots of organized wildlife guides and this was one of the best. Their small group size really makes for a great experience. Would highly recommend and worth every penny

Hello, the page says a maximum of 6 in a group but we have 7 people on our trip. Can we do 7? also, is there a Sea Lion tour we can tag this onto?
Hi, I see the minimum age is five, however, we have a two year old and are wondering if the two year old and an adult could come on the boat and not get in the water and if so, what the cost of that would be? So it would be four getting in the water and two staying on the boat. Thanks!

I used VIP tours La Paz, and I believe there was a minimum of 4. There was 4 in our party and it was no problem to have 2 more. Some operators had a lot of people in the boat and that would definitely limit the experience. That said, I'd call and ask. They may be willing to go with less people, especially if tourism is down due to COVID. Highly recommend going with this group!!

From what I understand, it really can be either morning or afternoon when the Sharks appear most. The water is calmer in the morning, and it's warmer in the afternoon. If it's windy, I would go in the morning, if it's cold, I would go in the afternoon!
