We very much enjoyed our afternoon with Jack and Mark and the perspectives they both openly shared about their experiences growing up and living in West Belfast.
Physically walking the streets with locals, having time to stop and view the murals representing the history we felt was more impactful than taking a taxi or bus tour.
We were pleased to appreciate the two sides of the troubles, which without doing this tour we could have spent our long weekend in Belfast and not seen any evidence of that past.

A very moving and challenging tour of the area at the core of 'the troubles'. To hear the narrative from each community, the very real lived life stories from both guides either side of the fence was humbling. Yet you come away less certain of anything...

We researched and read about the history before we came so we could get the most out of the experience.Definately worth doing this as you get both sides of the history and how it is now.Alot to digest afterwards which we did over drinks.

A walking tour with a difference, and it's not for the faint-hearted. Set entirely in West Belfast, a working-class area of Belfast where the 'Troubles' started in 1969 with the killing of two people by the RUC during a civil rights march.
We meet at the Divis Flats at the start of the Falls Road, now on the entirely Catholic and republican side of the 7km 'peace wall' that separates two communities . Our guide is Gerald Fusco, a former member of the IRA and a passionate republican. His brother was killed in the Troubles as was his best friend and Gerald was interned in the same H block as Bobby Sands so unsurprisingly he blamed the RUC and the British Army for just about everything bad that happened before the Anglo-Irish agreement brought an uneasy peace to N.Ireland. He seemed pretty certain that he would see a united Ireland in his or his children's lives. He walked us up the Falls and showed us the famous murals and the significant events that happened during the Troubles.
In one of the gaps in the peace wall, Gerald handed over to Mark Tracey for a walk down the Shankill Road, the 100% protestant and loyalist side. He gave us an entirely different perspective, one where a series of atrocities and gruesome murders were perpetrated by the IRA on the civilians of the Shankill. Pubs, restaurants and a chip shop were bombed with no warning and many people including babies were killed. Mark was as passionate as Gerald and as convinced that 'the other side' was at fault. The tour ended at a memorial to all the people murdered by the IRA. Mark believes that it's only a matter of time before the terrorists take up arms again.
The tragedy is that the people on both sides of the wall are essentially the same and, before 1969, they attended school together and had friends in the other community. Now there is no mixing.
I left the Tour feeling pretty depressed really as I couldn't see where it was going to end. Gerald and Mark were not up for a compromise and, by all accounts, no-one living in West Belfast wants the wall pulled down. It was, however, a great Tour, two committed guides and an insight into the unique challenges facing the community. Highly recommended - but no toilet breaks! Take water with you.

This is a brilliant tour for both people with a lot or no knowledge of the history of The Troubles. We were met for the first stage of the tour by Robert, an ex political prisoner . He quickly thanked us for coming and explained how the tour would work. His side of the tour was very personal based on some disturbing experiences and his own personal thoughts. He spoke very well and gave an honest explanation and answered all questions put to him. This is obviously very personal to Robert and this showed. We were then handed to Mark from the other side of the Peace/Separation Wall who immediately gave a talk on the atrocities that have occurred by both sides. Mark was very knowledgable and provided a warts and all description of events from the times.Again, any questions are answered honestly . There are obviously 2 sides to this situation and both were delivered in an interesting and engaging way. Some deliberately vivid descriptions are given of actions that have been carried out by both sides.
It is great to see the areas that I have only heard about and see the way some people have to live near the Wall.
There is a lot of walking and standing so maybe not the best for people with mobility issues.
My own advice is do not miss this tour.

Excellent format visiting both sides of the peace walls with guides representing each political viewpoint. The guides were knowledgeable and passionate about their opinions. The guides were open to discuss all questions, even opposing or difficult ones.
The tour is long and involves a lot of standing.

I had high expectations and they were fully met. Our first guide Robert was very informative and told us his story. The second guide Mark had a 180 degree different story and was very passionate about his story as well. The tour was a 3 hr period and about 2 of it walking. The only thing I’d say could make it better would be to have both guides sit down with us afterwards and answer questions. I’d say this is a Must Do tour while in Belfast.

This tour was outstanding.
The tour is split into 2 sections, with the first 1.5 hour with a republican tour guide on the republican side of the peace line, and then handed over at the border to a loyalist guide on the loyalist side of the border for the next 1.5 hours. This area of Belfast (Falls road and Shankill road) is still divided and has an active 'peace line'.
Both guides gave passionate and informed tours, and were open to questions and challenges from the tour guests. Neither claim to give an objective account, which is what makes this tour so different to any I have done before- it is their subjective accounts that make the tour interesting, engaging and powerful.
The tour challenged my own perceptions of the conflict, emphasising the barriers to (lasting) peace. I am so glad I did this tour and have told many people about it already.
I will not forget what I saw and heard during this tour.
Many thanks to the tour guides who do this tour- I hope that educating the wider community and international community will help raise awareness of this issue and hopefully help find a solution for lasting peace in the areas still struggling.
