- Reiseglad_60-modell00Båt fra fastlandet til Aran Island.Det er ulike måter å komme seg fra Galway til Aran øyene på. Det går fly til alle tre øyene, men flyplassen ligger et stykke fra Galway sentrum, så det tar ikke lenger tid med båt. Båt fra Rossaweel er enkelt, siden det går shuttlebuss fra sentrum som korresponderer med båtene. En kan også ta rutebuss til Doolin (rute 350), og båt til Inisheer. Denne strekningen betjenes av The Doolin Ferry. Doolin Ferry går også mellom øyene, men man kan komme til og fra alle tre øyene med Aran Island Ferries også. Det oppleves som lite samarbeid mellom de ulike transportoperatørene, men ved turistinformasjonen i Kilronan på Inishmore, får man god veiledning. Det er en del å spare på å bestille tur og retur fra øyene samlet, så planlegg øyturen på forhånd. Reiser en fra Rossaweel til Inishmore, gjelder returbillett også fra Inisheer eller Inishman, men båt mellom øyene ordnes utenom.

Great day over to the Aran Islands. Ferry departed on time - 10:30am. Bike hire recommended just by the port as you land. You can cover all the sites and have enough time to grab some food before the boat leaves at 5pm.

We booked our boat rid online , after travelling from Galway in the morning it took us about half an hour we parked in the car park , you pay when you exit , and made our way to the boat terminal, a large que had formed but we boarded fast , the weather that day was good but if it had been rough it would had been rough as we we’re outside the whole journey, there is seats inside if it had rained but we’re all taken , sick bags were available on request but we didn’t need , I seen bikes , dogs , and wheel chairs on board , it was clean and the staff were lovely ,toilets and a coffee shop on board as well . It took about an hour going and return seemed faster although you don’t see the time as there is so much to look at , when you get off you can rent bikes or go on a guided tour as we did with safari tours , he was wonderful and a lovely man full of craic and knowledge of the island, look out for him €20 per person, this was one of my best days on holiday a truly memorable experience.

Nous avons dormi à Galway la veille, il a fallu prévoir un certain temps le lendemain pour rejoindre le port d'embarquement car la route est très encombrée (prévoir une heure). La traversée s'est bien passée, environ 40 mn, c'est dommage qu'il n'y ait quasiment pas de places prévues en extérieur sur le bateau. Sont distribués des prospectus au départ, pour un loueur de vélos, c'était bien vu car nous en cherchions un et j'ai pu réserver en ligne depuis le bateau. Journée à Inishmore parfaite, randonnée à vélo, certains endroits sont déserts, personne en vue, cela fait du bien ! et nous avons eu du soleil. Nous sommes rentrés avec le ferry de 17h et un peu de tangage au programme. Je recommande cette compagnie sans problème.

#1: sit in the back of the boat if you're not sure if you get seasick ⛴
#2: taking pictures of the waves crashing against the boat makes it worse 🤢
#3: raise your hand and you'll get a cheerful blue and red bag 🛍
Seasickness aside, riding the ferry to Inis Mor was a good experience! There was lots of space for our group to sit together and the boat left right on time, even a little early! One of the people in our group saw a dolphin🐬 and another person saw something bigger but wasn't sure what it was 🐳? On the trip over the guys on the boat were very helpful and checked on me several times, gave me tips to feel better including helping me get to a seat in the back, and kept me up to date with how many more minutes until we docked. The trip back was much smoother and I was able to enjoy the ride across the sea 😎.

We took the ferry to Inis Mór after collecting my eldest child at the end of a two week stay at the Gaeltacht with Coláiste Chamuis. We were able to book the ferry half an hour before our sailing time of 11.45 and the journey to the island took around 40 minutes. We took a local tour bus from the village which is close to the pier and learned some really interesting facts about life on the island from the driver. The island has maintained much of the culture and heritage of traditional Irish life, including everyday use of the Irish language.
We did a little shopping and stopped into The Bar in the village for food which left us with enough time to visit three main sites:
Na Seacht dTeampaill (The Seven Churches) which dates from the 8th-13th century and was historically a monastic foundation and centre of pilgrimage.
Dún Aonghasa which is the largest of the prehistoric stone forts of the Aran Islands, originally constructed c.1100BC and re-fortified around 700-800AD,
and
Poll na bPéist (the Wormhole) which is a natural rectangular shaped pool at the bottom of the cliffs that takes its name from ‘péist’ which is the reptilian sea monster from Gaelic folklore.
We did a lot of walking - Dún Aonghasa is about a 1km walk from the Visitor Centre where the bus dropped us off and Poll na bPéist is a further walk of around 1.6km from Dún Aonghasa, over uneven and rugged terrain and rough natural rock.
Dún Aonghasa is perched on a sheer sea-cliff and faces the Atlantic Ocean with no barrier at the cliff edge, so the views from the fort are spectacular. You really do feel as if you are at the edge of the world.
From Dún Aonghasa the way to Poll na bPéist is not well signposted, possibly because locals want to deter people from visiting the site as access is difficult and potentially dangerous - even with google maps we got completely lost on the way there - but when we eventually found it we all agreed that the sight was awe-inspiring.
We left Inis Mór on the 6.30 ferry with a newly discovered appreciation of the spectacular power and beauty of the ocean!

The ferry there and back was fantastic. The bus ride to the pier was smooth there and back. Things were on time and we had great weather. Things to pass on to future travelers-1. Once you arrive there are multiple tour vehicles lined up trying to win your business and it felt pushy to me. 2. Plan your time if you are hiking up to Dun A… to see the cliffs because it’s a steep hike and I hadn’t seen anywhere that it would take about 30 minutes each way so once we ate and did some sweater shopping we actually didn’t have time to hike up before our ferry left. 3. You can’t hike up unless you walk through the gift shop at the very crowded/commercialized bottom. 4. The island is pretty but it’s a bit of a mess with hop on hop off vehicles, bikers, walkers and narrow roads. 5. Try the fudge at the little shop next to the sweater shop. We enjoyed it! 6. Had excellent fish and chips at Joe Watty’s. The staff were super helpful and relaxed. If I return I’d try to go earlier in the day and spent more time in to do more.

The day was a real highlight in our Irish adventure. Rent bicycles (electric is a huge help, even if you think you won’t need it!) and explore Inis Mor from one end to the other. Don’t miss the Wormhole, if you can. The hike is not an easy one as you need to traverse large rocks to find it, but it is worth the effort. The fort was also beautiful and you can walk straight up to the edge of the cliff. Be careful if you’re traveling with small children! Also, don’t miss the Seal Colony and stop at the lovely beach. Bring a bathing suit if you’re brave. The water is beautiful, but you’re still in Ireland so temps are quite cold. We visited in May and had very strong sun and high temps. Bring sunscreen. My husband got a bit too much sun and didn’t even feel it until we were back in Galway.
If you can, spend the night. If not, you can cover Inis Mor in a day, but you’ll leave wanting more.

We took the bus from Galway to Rossaveel then the ferry out to Inis Mor. Stayed there 2 nights and then ferry back to Rossaveel and bus back to Galway. Super easy to navigate and find the starting point in Galway, plenty of room for luggage on both the bus and the ferry. On the ride out, it was pretty choppy, staff from the boat came around to check on us (hint, if it is a choppy ride, go for the back of the boat). There was a coffee bar on the boat with some snacks. Everything was on time and smooth transitions.

The trip to Rossaveel and ferry ride to Inis Mór went smoothly. Returning, there was turbulent weather creating rough seas. Despite the rough ferry ride, the crew did an excellent job of keeping a calm atmosphere. Would book again when visiting the Aran Islands!
