The views were beautiful. We were expecting a larger boat , it was a small boat with a little motor that held the 13 of us. We were on the boat for over an hour which was a little too long. The horse and carriage was a great way to see the hillsides . All in all is was a great experience but pricey.

This is the way to do the Gap

Friendly efficient and knowledgeable staff. Picked up in the morning by autobus and taken to Kate Kearney's Cottage at the entry to the Gap. You walk or bike the Gap, but many hire a pony trop. Bring cash - it's all the drivers take.

Questionable business practices

I’ve requested my trip canceled four times and the tour operator is not responding. My credit card is to be charged for over one hundred dollars tomorrow despite these repeated requests. I’m very concerned that Maureen is deliberately ignoring my repeated requests for cancellation. I find this to be unprofessional and questionable business practices.

Hi Kathleen, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I wish you took as much time to find the button that simply allows you to cancel your reservation. Maureen took the time to ring you and explained to you that it was up to you to cancel your booking as it wasn't our company that took payment, it was Viator, so you had to cancel it on their system. Since leaving your misleading review I see that your reservation has been cancelled. We're very disappointed that you've left such a review after what's been a difficult few years for businesses. Not that much time for a relaxed and joyful walk…

The tour was ok. Unfortunately, there was not that much time to walk through the Gap. If you are fit, you will arrive at the Cottage for the Boats on time - if not, there are plenty of horse carriages avaiable at the start. The boat trip was nice - put on very warm clothes, its very windy! In summary, everything is very short and the tour is already over quite early!

Best way to see the Killarney National Park
Wow. This was an excellent way for seeing the National Park. The jaunty ride was spectacular, be advised there is one hill that needs to be walked, and the boat ride was charming and well guided.
Would highly recommend if you want to see the park. You may even spot a white tailed eagle or some deer like we did!

Beautiful nature, bad “tour”

I was incredibly frustrated by this ”tour” and would recommend avoiding it at all costs. The only reason it gets two stars instead of one is because it was beautiful nature. It was my belief that this was a tour, but instead it was really just get in a taxi and good luck. There was no bus pickup, absolutely no communication about what to expect, and no guide to tell us about the history, flora and fauna, or the architecture in the park. Instead I was dropped off near the horses and told that I could hire one if I wanted. However they didn’t say that instead of letting those who arrived at the horses first to take the first cart, that they would be prioritizing the “pre booked tours”. An hour and a half after arriving at the horses and nearly 50 people who arrived after me having been given priority and left, I was finally shoved into a tiny cart where I didn’t even get a seat. It was genuinely painful. Half way through the horse driver told us that our cart was out of balance and that we had to walk up the hill instead of riding in the carriage. I specifically took the carriage because I have a medical problem and struggle with large inclines, and instead was forced to pay to walk up one. At the end of the horses the driver charged everyone in the cart 10 euro over the list price online. So I had to wait an hour and a half, get cut in line by a bunch of “pre booked tours” (even though this was a pre booked tour), and then pay an extra ten euro to be forced to walk up a giant hill because they packed the carriage too tight. By the time I finally got to the boat (which was enjoyable and quite scenic) and completed the route I didn’t get to explore the castle at all before having to take the not-bus (taxi) back into town. If I had known this was a self guided “tour” I would have never taken it and honestly feel quite scammed. You can easily do this route by yourself by taking a taxi to the trailhead with the horses, paying the extra money for the horse and carriage anyway, and then the boat all while having the opportunity to explore the castle at the end. Especially since “entry” into the park is literally free. This isn’t worth the almost $60 I paid and I recommend you don’t pay it either.

An amazing day in Killarney National Park

I could tell from the photos on the website that the tour would be a great adventure, but my family and I were simply blown away by the sheer beauty of the scenery and the charm of a jaunting car trip. Even the drizzle we had on the boat return to Ross Castle could not dampen our day.

We started with a short bus ride from Killarney town to Kate Kearney's cottage where we were immediately taken to our jarvey Ben and his horse Lucy, who loaded us on the jaunting car for our trip through the Gap of Dunloe. As the website noted, you pay cash to the jarvey for this part of the tour. At the time of our trip, it was 25 Euro pp, so if you wanted a private car (called a trap) it cost 100 Euro. And it was worth every cent (and I left a nice tip to boot). The trip through the Gap of Dunloe is majestic. Everywhere you looked was another postcard photo opportunity, and Ben's stories and jokes made the trip so incredibly memorable. There is an uphill portion of the trip where we were asked to walk to give Lucy an easier trek up this part of the mountain. But we were told that we could get back in the trap at anytime if we felt we could not continue walking. Even with my two bad knees, the walk was very manageable and it was nice to say we "hiked" part of the Gap.

When we got to Lord Brandon's cottage we had to say goodbye to Ben and Lucy and went off to a outdoor cafe-style lunch before boarding our 12-person boat to head to Ross Castle. The trip across the lakes and adjoining river was also very scenic, although a steady drizzle did dampen that part of the trip a bit.

The only disappointment was that we did not have time to visit Ross Castle when we got off of the boat as our bus was waiting to take us back to Old Weir Lodge to end our roughly 6-hour journey.

Of our week in Ireland, this was one of the top two highlights, and the number 1 scenic highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!

Gap of Dunloe early July

Our family of 5- 2 adults, children 22, 19 & 17, really enjoyed this experience. The bus picked us up right at our inn, Old Weir Lodge, and took us to the cottage where we chose a jaunty to take us the 7 miles to the boat launch. Since there were 5 of us, we had 4 in the carriage (very tight fit for us big Americans :)) and our son was a great sport and rode the horse. We had to pay $25 each cash. The scenery was amazing and we were really lucky to have no rain. We did have to get off the carriage and walk up some steep parts. At the end of the horse ride is the Lord’s cottage and we purchased some soup and sandwiches. Cash only. We then took the boat through the different lakes and channels while our guide is told us different details about the area. Our guide was very funny and kept us entertained for the hour and a half. We got to Ross Castle and chose to tour it but it was not included. The weather held off so it was a beautiful day.

A lovely tour

We had a great day tour. The walk through the Gap was incredibly gorgeous. We were glad we did the 7 mile walk instead of the horse/buggy. Slow walkers should be aware - you won't make the boat if you dawdle. We stopped to take pictures along the way and had 30 minutes for lunch. The boat ride was lovely. The bus transport was a little frustrating. We were told to go to Old Weir hotel where we picked up the bus. Then, the bus took us back into town where we waited 30 minutes for no apparent reason (this may have cut into the walking time). And when we got dropped off, there was no instruction. The driver just pointed and said go that way. It's difficult to get lost, but a map or schedule would have been reassuring.
