The Viking Cruise lived up to it's name. We had a beautiful stateroom with a veranda. Everyone aboard the ship that worked for Viking could not have been nicer. The food was wonderful, the guides on the excursions were excellent and it was so relaxing to cruise on the Rhine River. Then everything changed on Friday. At the 6 pm daily meeting we were told that the ship would not be continuing on and that we would have to take a bus to visit The Black Forest in Germany on Saturday. They did not give a further explanation though the rumours were that something was wrong with the ship as some heard a loud noise at 4 am Friday morning. Others thought because of the rain the Rhine River was too high so the boat would not make it under the upcoming bridges and still others thought it had something to do with the locks. So our bus trip to the Black Forest was 2 hours up and 2 hours back to the ship, hardly the nice relaxing cruise we were promised. Those passengers that had early departures on Sunday were bused from The Black Forest to Basel where Viking but them up in a nice hotel. The rest of us had to endure another 2 hour bus ride from the ship to the airport in Basel.

The worst nightmare! I was shown to my stateroom and as soon as the door opened, you could smell the strong stench of sewage. We complained to the Captain, but were told we would have to live with it. It stunk the whole cruise, even after putting wet towels over the vents and flushing them.
If that was not bad enough, I noticed many people sick on the ship at the very beginning. More that half the ship was sick at the end. It turned out to be a Covid superspreader. I am now home sick with covid. There was an ambulance waiting for some poor soul when the ship finally docked in Basel. I had remarked throughout the tour, that I had never seen so many sick people on a ship before. The staff and servers were all coughing.That is after 15 ocean cruises and this is my second river cruise. I missed an excursion, as many others did because of the illnesses going around, and there were no reimbursements and no money back under any circumstances.
The staff was grumpy, probably because many were sick. I thought the food on Carnival was better. I have taken many different cruise lines.
I highly recommend Scenic as far as river cruises go. There are a 5+ star cruise company.

With no detail left to chance, our time on board the Viking Njord was nothing short of spectacular. The crew were all beautifully trained, friendly and always helpful. We were so taken by the experience, we have booked another cruise with Viking!

Took the Viking cruise from Amsterdam to Basel that left Amsterdam on August 30.
The cruise on its own was fine. We met some nice people on board, staff was excellent, the cruise director (Emily) was great. some of the tours were super.
However, the trip was dampened when we caught Covid on board.
Although Viking claims that they were to check the arriving passengers with their vaccination certificate, they did not! just lisp service on their web site and from the people who answered my queries!
The air reservation service we paid for was not up to par and we had to scramble and argue with that service to get what we had been promised.
They may be better than other companies in other areas, they certainly need improving on the quality of their cooking. This is sometimes less than average (the onion soup was a shame: they should have called it a beef broth with some onion and a piece of bread, not a French Onion soup. What a deception).
Some of the other food sometimes could not be eaten because it was too tough.
Couple of suggestions:
1 - replace the coffee served in the dining room by the coffee from the automatic machines.
2 - Change the chef
3 - ensure that both automatic coffee machines have the same temperature.
4 - Increase the free/shopping time during the tours.
5 - review the Air Service performance. They should at least apologize for their mistakes and not blame the airlines.
6 - Keep their word on what they advertise!

The Scenic river cruise, which we have been on before in France was very good. But the journey this time from Amsterdam to Cologne was not interesting at all due to factories either side of the river, but the rest of the river trip very good. The trips off the boat every day were also excellent. We did think there was some minor cut backs on the food mainly, the variety of choice on the evening meals compared to last year.
What was disappointing was that they allowed shorts and tee shirts to be worn at all the evening meals. Even the captains table!
We also thought that some of the waiting staff had not been trained properly, compared to staff on last years trip.
The junior suite we had was not worth the extra cost which was quite a big difference in price compare to the next cabin down.
The cruise director was excellent and worked very hard in every thing he arranged!

We have been looking into this cruise for a couple of years and were lucky to find exactly what we wanted (Aug 17-25) in March and paid at the end of Apr.
The communication has been very good and there is no confusion or misinformation so far (Jul 22).
The main thing I am curious about is Rhine water levels at cruise time.
Historically, Aug is the lowest.
Can't find any info, so far.
