The reason we chose this Tour was because we are fascinated by history, divinity, beauty, curious about the Region’s wines and wanted our daughters to learn and experience the art of making beautiful Portuguese Tiles from an authentic and renown artisan.
We were collected on time from the doorstep of our Lisbon Hotel by the young and enthusiastic Flavio [our Expert Guide for the Day] in a very comfortable air conditioned, Wi-Fi equipped van which had more than enough room for our family of 4.
Along the way to the awe-inspiring Christo Rei, we were regaled with much conversation by Flavio and I was very happy that my teenage daughters too were involved in the banter. The view of the Statue with its outstretched arms from the 25 de Abril bridge is so amazing that we couldn’t wait for him to take us to actually see the glorious statue modelled on Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. Flavio accompanied us to the site and gave us explanations of the origins of the Statue and other assorted statues and structures that dot the complex. The one of the Virgin Mary, looking longingly at her son, perched high up on a pedestal was exceptionally moving. Moreover, the view of Lisbon, the water and the 25 de Abril bridge from the site is breath taking and makes for great photos, which Flavio was happy to take of us. The 25 de Abril bridge looks eerily similar to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, only it is unique because it has trains and vehicles traversing it. As we were keen to pay extra and journey up to see the Statue at close quarters, Flavio gave us some time to explore the place on our own.
Next it was onwards to the majestic Sesimbra Castle, where we were accompanied by Flavio who explained to us it’s history and took us around its ancient walls to see countryside views and beautiful Cabo Espichel with its pristine beach and sparkling blue water below.
Lunch consisted of Portugal’s famed seafood in a traditional Setubal restaurant recommended by Flavio, where we tucked into scrumptious delights surrounded by locals.
The next part of our day was the most anticipated by our daughters not only because Magnificat Tours had organised a tile learning workshop for them with one of Azeitão’s best artisans, but also because as a surprise, they were given the opportunity to make one tile each! Something to bring home and always remember! It was interesting to learn of the processes to go into making Portuguese tiles and the different cultures that have influenced the making styles and designs over the years. It’s a pain staking, intricate process which can only be carried out to perfection by skilled hands.
Our final visit was to the José Maria da Fonseca Cellars where we were treated to a private tour and made to understand everything about the da Fonseca family, it’s business and its various wines. We even had the opportunity to sample its premium wines.
After such an amazing day with Flavio, we were reluctant to return to our Lisbon hotel.
There are hardly any Tour Companies which will treat you to such an extensive Tour in a Single Day and offer surprises for your children [individual tile making] and have them delivered [finished tiles] at no cost to your Hotel the next day. And I assure you very few guides will be like Flavio, who puts his heart and affection first and thinks of business later. Despite our children taking a while to complete making their tiles and lunch stretching out a little more than expected, despite our slow walking and frequent toilet breaks he ensured that the entire day turned out just as planned, without rushing us along or getting irritated. In fact, though we were a little late reaching the José Maria da Fonseca Cellars, he managed to convince the administration to provide us the private tour being offered by the Company, he was also empathetic to our children’s needs and took my husband to a nearby Lidl convenience store to pick up essentials without hesitating even a slightest bit.
By the end of the day, we were so happy that we are determined to use Magnificat Tours Services and request only for Flavio on our future visits to Portugal.
