Olivier provides a comprehensive door to door service and guide of the western front. Much of this could be learned from books or visiting Monash centre alone but what is provided on the tour is an appreciation of how then country side has evolved throughout the conflict into the present day. Witnessing sites of complete utter destruction supported by maps of trenches from 1916, gps position and photographs gives this real context.

What Olivier Dirson does not know about the WW1 campaigns of the Somme & Western Front is not worth knowing. His knowledge is exceptional & his ability to explain & describe the conditions, participants & battles that raged across this now pristine landscape is exceptional. Olivier uses WW1 trench maps & photographs with current GPS technology to reconstruct how these campaigns raged across this landscape of fields, pastures, ridges, valleys & villages. I had read the accounts but now I have a clear understanding that written words fall short in conveying. I highly recommend this very personalised experience with Olivier.

This was a fantastic tour, with just two of us in the car and Oliver our driver/tourer guide was absolutely brilliant. We were so fortunate to be taken and shown the RIBEMONT Communal Cemetery to see one of our relatives Norman Oscar Spence who was part of the third division’s 23rd Machine Gun Battalion, who was killed in action, after being sent to fight in Heilly near Villers Bretonneaux. This day tour, along with seeing so many other places, l will never forget.

Olivier went above and beyond, he was so knowledgeable about the WW1 battlefields . He researched a great uncle of mine that was killed at high woods and was able to show us the field where he was killed in battle. It was a trip I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. We visited the John Monash centre and many cemeteries and significant sites . Thoroughly recommend this tour.

My [Australian] husband and I stayed in Saint Quentin after already staying briefly in Amiens, on the recommendation of Oliver. This was a great decision because, personally for us, we were able to explore our relatives' WWI histories over time, history and geography over two days, with Olivier explaining details in relation to where he was driving, the contours of the land, the towns, the GPS map, the electronic map of the trenches and photos on his computer. He took us to just the right proportion of sights and memorials, museums, cemeteries and eating places, with the right length of time to suit us. When we culminated with the places our grandfather/ great uncle had served, died and were buried, Olivier allowed us to honour and grieve them privately with all the time we personally needed. When we then asked to be taken to somewhere for a stiff drink, he did that for us. He had done the research we requested and more beforehand. He was respectful while enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The history of the Australians but also other countries in the War was both fascinating and tragic. Being there certainly made it all so much more meaningful. We would recommend anyone doing a private tour read up about WW1 in the Somme region beforehand to have a basic understanding of events and the geography - otherwise the information can become too much. The detailed tourist brochure is a good reference.

We took this private tour with Olivier to discover more about the Australians’ role in the Somme region during WW1. The pace of the day was unhurried as our guide explained and commentated very clearly both while driving and at the various locations whilst also giving us enough time at all monuments and info centres to complete our own discoveries. Our lunch at a little cafe allowed more personalised chat which gave us a greater insight into French life. This immersion into the Somme region broadened our understanding of the fantastic role Australian soldiers and leaders played in vital strategic battles. A great day!

This is a fully comprehensive tour of the battlefields of the Somme.
Olivier is a very knowledgeable guide and made this tour a very personal one for me by researching my grandfather's military records and focusing the tour around him.
Olivier is able to make you feel like you were there at the time with insights into the strategical and topographical reasons certain parts of the campaigns turned out the way they did.
I cannot recommend this tour more highly.

10/10 recommend!!! Olivier went ABOVE and beyond what we expected to ensure we were given a personalised, tailor made tour.
He was able to find information about relatives, where they fought/were injured, then drove to those battlefields to show us.
I also really liked that he brought up trench maps and compared it to where we were situated so we could have a better understanding on the perspective of where the battles and trenches would be.
I was with my 81 year old grandmother and he was so patient, he helped her with her walker and was non judgemental, warm and caring.
I loved his passion for knowledge, lots of tour companies show you the sites then rush you and move you on, Olivier did not rush (in fact I think we went overtime). He knew so much about it all and the whole day was able to provide information about who, where, why, and what battles took place. What towns were impacted, the list goes on.
Olivier, THANKYOU for fulfilling my grandmothers dream of seeing this area. You made the experience feel like we were visiting France with a local friend. My grandmother wasn’t expecting half of what you delivered and she is currently messaging her friends about how delighted she is with her day.

We had a wonderful experience. Olivier took us to a number of sights including (but not limited to) Villers-Bretonneux and the Sir John Monash Centre, Lochnagar Crater, Pozieres and the Newfoundland Memorial. As well he took us to some specific sites where my grandfather had been in action. Throughout the day, Oliver provided a running and highly knowledgeable commentary on where we were, what had happened there during WW1 and, where applicable, what my grandfather’s unit would have been doing.
As well, we were picked up and delivered back to our accomodation at the indicated times.
Finally, Olivier is personable, knowledgable and enthusiastic.

Olivier, our tour guide picked us up on a cold, wet Sunday morning.
My wife an I thought that we could be in for a very miserable day ahead but the exact opposite happened. The car we were picked up in was beautiful with plenty of room and Olivier from the start reassured us with his first friendly greeting that all would be good.
We had a full day tour (in the rain) and you know that it has been a great day when it was over all to quickly. It's the little things on a tour that make all the difference and our guide had so many interesting facts and explained them so well. We would stop on the side of roads and he would show us exactly where who (Allies and Germans) had what positions and when.
I learnt more in one day than I have all my life about the battles on the Western Front. Olivier is also more than happy to tailor your experience if you wish to visit certain sites that you may have had a distant relative involved in or lost.Thanks you Olivier for a wonderful day that we will never forget.
