Skrevet 4. juli 2015

Excellent tour taking in some local landmarks on the way down including Brighton Beach Huts, Moonlit Sanctuary, the Pinnacles and the Nobbies before settling down to see the Penguin Parade. Joni, our quide, was first class and full of useful information and gave us just the right amount of time at each stop.

Despite the inclement weather at the start of the day, Woody (and Buzz) brightened the spirits of the group from the get go. His chilled nature and welcoming attitude made the long day enjoyable and entertaining. There wasn't a question he couldn't answer and if he didn't know, he made sure he found out and reported back. He had a great knowledge of all the locations, sharing insider tips throughout the day.

If there is any question in your mind as to whether this tour is worth it... DO IT. Do not hesitate! The opportunity to see the penguins in their natural environment is so unique and memorable.
There are benefits to using a tour company such as this one, which clearly has ample experience with taking guests to this attraction. We were picked up around the corner from our Melbourne hotel (at the nearest hotel where a tour bus can pull off the street and not block traffic) and returned to the same spot. We appreciated not having to drive late at night. The driver offered some great background and history about the penguins during the drive to help pass the time. He made sure we arrived with plenty of time and gave us instructions for how to get the best views, both of the penguins on the beach and of the penguins near their burrows after they walk up from the shore.
As far as the Penguin Parade experience itself - there really are no words that do it justice. When you arrive and you're seated in bleachers with hundreds of other people, you start to wonder if you'll be able to see anything worthwhile. Once the penguins start to come in, if you wait 10 minutes or so, most of the people will leave. Then you can go down to the front and get right down on the sand, almost next to the penguins, and see them up close. Absolutely astonishing.
After you've spent a bit of time watching on the beach, you can head up the boardwalks, which are built alongside the penguin paths - so the penguins are walking right next to you, chattering away, then branching off as they reach their burrows and heading back to great their mates and babies. So adorable and fascinating - I could have spent all night watching them!
Regarding the rest of the day tour, the stops along the way felt a little random. We appreciated seeing the bathing boxes at Brighton Beach but this is something you can easily do during your time in Melbourne. Moonlit Sanctuary was OK - we were there at an odd time (just missed a lot of the educational talks) and the staff were not very encouraging. When we entered, they said we should not expect to see any animals because they would all be under cover resting due to the heat. Perhaps they were just trying to manage expectations, but it felt like they were telling us "don't bother coming in." Of course we did go in, since we had advance purchase tickets as part of the tour, and we did end up seeing a decent number of animals in the end. Then it was on to the Nobbies where you pick up your tickets for the Penguin Parade - this has a very nice visitor center and boardwalks with great views of the ocean and penguin burrows. Dinner in Cowes was nice - touristy restaurants and very busy, but it's a charming little town with sea views.
This experience is about the best it can be for the time involved (getting you back to Melbourne at a reasonable hour). However, if we had been able to stay down on Phillip Island rather than having to drive back, we would have been able to spend more time with the penguins. That would be my only recommendation - if you are able to stay nearby and spend more time, do that. Otherwise, if taking the day trip from Melbourne is the only option, absolutely don't skip it.

EXCELLENT!! Loved the penguins! We also made a few other stops, plenty of time for dinner but not too much time. Great restaurant suggestions for dinner (very helpful). Loved our tour guide - Alex. I was so surprised when she said she had only been doing it for 2 months!

Simon was an excellent guide. It was a packed day but he made everything seem relaxed. Moonlit Sanctuary was touristy but lots of indigenous animals to see. The beaches on Philip Island were spectacular and great to see kangaroos and penguins in the wild. Penguins coming inland was moving but just so many tourists x

Penguins were adorable. Jaime, our guide, was fantastic! Long day, but he made it fun.
Could have skipped the Moonlight Sanctuary as the other spots were much better.

Super complete tour. I was pleasantly surprised; we stopped at all the mentioned points with enough time to enjoy without rushing. My guide was Chris N, who was always available to assist us and answer our questions. It’s a long tour, but for animal lovers, it’s definitely worth it! Highly recommend!

We had a lovely and amazing day!
This is a small group (20) tour of Philip Island with the highlight being the parade of the penguins at dusk.
We left Melbourne at 11:30. We made 6 stops: Brighton Beach, the Moonlit Sanctuary, the Seal Rock precinct, the Nobbies boardwalk, the town of Cowes for supper and the Philip Island Penguin Parade center.
This is a 12 hours tour with a 2 hour drive each way. However, Mark K, our guide gave us talks on the history of home land, Victoria state and Australia as well as information on the wild life and vegetation seen. So the 2 hour drive to Philip Island was pleasant and went quickly. We liked the visit of the Moonlit Sanctuary. The Pinguin parades was the highlight of the day worth waiting for (as long as you like wild life observation).
This is a well organized and well run tour. Mark K was very pleasant and was able to answer questions well. Each stop provided enough time to enjoy the spot.
Although I had brought my walking shoes (as mentioned in the instructions), I wore my sport sandals throughout the day. In January, we wore our shorts for the day, but we were glad to have longer light pants and a warmer coat for the evening.
Although we had brought along lunch, there is the possibility of buying a late lunch at the Sanctuary. For diner, we had a stop in Cowes for 1 hour. We went to Bani’s Greek Tavern. We were served rapidly and had very good food.

We really enjoyed the whole day's experiences which exceeded our expectations.
Graham our tour guide went the extra mile and had the perfect approach to everyone.

Our NCL Jewel cruise ship arrives at 8 am on Feb 18 and leaves at 4 pm on Feb 19. We'd like to sign up for the Feb 18 Phillip Island Parade Day Tour from Melbourne but I don't know what pick up location to select as we are staying on our cruise ship overnight instead of a hotel. Please advise where we need to go, and if we will be able to get there in time for pick up because as I mentioned above, we arrive at 8 am on Feb 18, the day of the tour. Thank you for your help.

They are quite flexible on the pick up options. Although they only have a few set of hotels in the online form for reservation, they do ask for your hotel address and try to accommodate for all people joining the tour and pick each party up from their respective hotels.
Skrevet 26. oktober 2019
How much time did you get at the Moonlit Wildlife Sanctuary?
Skrevet 11. august 2019
About an hour to an hour and a half including lunch. Also depends on what time of the year it is. Less time in the winter since the penguins cross the beach earlier.
Skrevet 11. august 2019
What is the difference between the 10a.m. Start, amd the 11:00 a.m. start?
Skrevet 22. januar 2019
One is summer start time, and one is winter start time.

Hi, we are staying nearby one of the hotels that is a designated pick-up spot. Can we select that hotel and meet there in the morning? Thank you!
Skrevet 27. desember 2018
That is a good idea. It saves you time (and effort) finding the designated pick up spot.

Hi. We’re a family of 5 with a rental car. We will be coming from Queenscliffe. Could we still do your tour? We will stay on Phillip island on night of 26th? My kids ages are 11, almost 9 and almost 6 year old.
