The tour guide is very knowledgeable and experiences. Beautiful rainforest tracks on the way back. We saw snow mountain all the way in Spring which was the highlight.

Taking the tour from Te Anau so much better than from Queenstown for travel time. Endorse all the usual compliments re great host, small group, comfortable vehicle, good communication during bookings etc...
Was a wet and rainy day and would definitely still recommend as a great experience. Dont let weather turn you off.
Pre booked lunch was very nice, but best advice would be to pack a lunch (make your own or buy the day before) - only because you could do the same for fraction of cost.
Windows fogging up in vehicle was an issue - though hard for operator to manage. We were continuously wiping window to be able to see out window. Take something to manage that.
Several stops in National Park there and back added to quality of day.
Recommend.

Fabulous day trip to Milford Sound! Steve was an amazing guide; full of knowledge and extremely friendly. He was an incredibly safe driver which I very much appreciated! Such an amazing small group experience topped off by delicious banana bread and tea at one of our stops. Thank you!!

Just had the most fantastic day in New Zealand. Tanya picked us up at our motel early this morning and drove us through Fiordland National Park to the incredible Milford Sound. She is so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the fauna and topography of this region!
Greatly enhanced our experience with frequent stops for photos and a once in a lifetime experience with the amazing Kea bird, the only Alpine Parrot, native to this region. These amazing creatures are so inquisitive and intelligent, not to mention magnificent in color. Exceeded our expectations. Boat cruise and packed lunch with added snacks and treats were unexpected but very much appreciated.
All in all the best 9 hours we have spent in New Zealand thus far. Highly recommended.

Would highly recommend this tour. Was a lovely 15 pax van which was much more personal then a big bus. Steven our driver and guide was so friendly and personal. He introduced everyone to each other at the beginning of the tour and it felt like one big family travelling together. He was very informative and interesting with personal stories and very knowledgeable about the area. We really enjoyed our tour with Steven and the sights are incredibly beautiful. Saw dolphins and seals on the boat which was a bonus to the beautiful landscape.

The coach trip from Te Anau with Stephen was excellent - he was friendly, knowledgeable and full of interesting anecdotes about the area. He was a big part of making the day so memorable. The scenery was breathtaking, both on the drive to and at Milford. The commentary on the boat was hard to hear, unfortunately, but we did stop to see a crested penguin, seals & one of the waterfalls up close. We were a little concerned about coming in the winter but the lack of crowds and the light at this time of year made it spectacular. We would highly recommend this trip.

We had a fantastic trip with Tanya. She was so warm, welcoming and friendly when we first arrived yesterday morning. She was so knowledgable about all the areas we visited, and gave us plenty of time to explore and take pictures. She made us feel safe at all times with the Winter driving conditions.

Our family had a great day with Jonathan. His knowledge of the local area, history & Māori stories were just as good as the cruise in Milford. It is a long and treacherous drive in winter- and the decision to take a tour rather than drive ourselves was well worth it. We would never have pulled over where Jonathon did and would have missed all the amazing photos, and multiple Keas without his expertise! He (and all the other passengers) were amazing with our 5yo who said “the tour captain” was the best thing about the day- even better than the boat!
All the stops were well thought out, the scones were the envy of everyone else during the cruise around Milford. Leaving from Te Anu meant an earlier cruise that misses the large bus groups so plenty of seats and room to see in & out as the dolphins & seals popped up beside the boat. Thank you to Jonathan & all at Fiordland Tours!

The cruise on Milford Sound is about 1 and a half hours. We took a full day trip from Te Anua . Drive to Milford is approx 2 hours depending on how many stops you have along the way. It was a rainy day when we went , our driver was fabulous, stopping at less busy tourist spots , for photo opportunities, . His knowledge of the area was outstanding, . I would certainly recommend booking a tour , you can then sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery .

We are travelling in this area in July 2019. WOndering about the suitability for this trip in winter.... are there regular cancellations, and also... is it better travelling from Te Anau for a trip to Milford sound rather than from Queenstown? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Also can’t comment on the suitability of this trip in the winter, but I’d strongly advise staying in Te Anau the night before. Much of the day is spent in the van (seeing remarkable sights), and having to do the drive from Queenstown the same day is A LOT of time on the road. Lots of reasonable accommodations in Te Anau.

Review of: Full-Day Milford Sound Extraordinaire Tour from Te Anau
We took the early tour with 8:00AM pickup. I recommend that time. Fiordland Tours operates small vans - 16 passenger rather than the big 40-45 person buses you see with other companies. Still big windows for the views, so no downside there. Contributes to better camaraderie within the group and more interaction with the guide. They also connect with a smaller boat on the Sound - maybe 80 person capacity rather than several hundred. Because it was early, we had about 40 aboard, so there was plenty of room.
Sasha, our guide/driver/hostess, is a local who could share all kinds of detail about the area. Most importantly, she is experienced with the tour, and her plan was flawless. We made just a couple stops, but went almost straight to the boat. Sasha encouraged us to eat our lunch as soon as we boarded, while the boat was preparing to depart, so we would not miss anything on the cruise. After the boat cruise, on the return to Te Anau, we made the other advertised stops. As we were going south, we encountered dozens of big buses arriving from Te Anau or Queenstown with thousands more people to fill the boats. So, we had seen all the sights without the massive throngs.
Do NOT take the tour from Queenstown. It is too long of a drive and you will be one or a few among hundreds or more at the same time. Go to Te Anau first. Fiordland Tours cannot be beaten. Book in advance.

I think this tour runs most days of the year. Just go ahead and book it on their website. My wife and I did and it's a small bus tour (so not the crowded big bus) and was excellent value for money with great and attentive staff. We also ordered their pre-packed lunch which just made things so much easier on the day as not many other opportunities to buy food once you are on the tour itself.
