My wife and I were the only two on the tour on this occasion, which was great, as we had Merv all to ourselves. As hosts, Mervyn and Rangiemarie are excellent and support each other for the duration of the tour, which in our case, took a little more than the advertised duration. But that is not a complaint - they gave us so much attention and information that the tour seemed to just fly by.
We stopped at a number of locations and were regaled with a lot of historical and cultural information, with some personalised connections to our hosts' histories.
Our tour vehicle was comfortable and I don't think anything would have been too much trouble for our hosts.
This tour was the main reason we came to Whangarei on our tour of the North Island and I would have to say if you are ever in Whangarei - do this tour!

This is a must tour to do when in Whangarei!
Your exceptional and amazing tour guides Mervyn and Rangimarie offer an experience of culture, history and connectivity through their amazing storytelling of their culture and Māori history in Whangarei and the Northern island. Don’t miss out on this spiritual and educational tour! Would recommend to all travelling through this beautiful and sacred land!

We came to Whangarei just to have this experience and we were not disappointed. Mervyn and Rangimarie welcomed us into their home to share their food and their deep connections to their Maori Culture. From Mervyn’s traditional welcome to their family farewell this was an unforgettable day. I don’t want to give away too many “spoilers”. I recommend this tour so you can experience this gem for yourself. Definitely a 10 out of 10 for Tu Tika Tours.

My family of five absolutely loved this tour. It was fun for my husband and I and our three kids (aged 5,4, and 1). Merv and Rangimarie are very knowledgable about the history and culture of the Maori people as they clearly embrace their heritage. At the same time, they made it really fun to learn about the Maori language and traditions for the kids including cultural songs, dances and chants. The tour was a really fun way to spend part of the day. If I were to do it again, I would probably choose the full day experience as well. I’m glad we did this tour early in our trip in New Zealand because now I feel that I have more insight into the culture which will benefit as for the rest of the trip. Highly recommend!!!!

We were treated to the Tu Tika Tours Cultural Tour with Mervyn and Rangiamarie. Having visited NZ quite a few times over the years we can simply say this is probably one of, if not the best cultural tour we have been on. Our hosts were simply brilliant and not only did we laugh and enjoy ourselves a little bit silly, we also learnt heaps and a new song to take home. I could not recommend this tour enough. We saw beautiful country side and heard in an extremely relevant and respectful way so much of the local and rich history of the Maori people. Will certainly be looking to book another tour with them on our next visit.

Definitely a great experience! Murhyn and Rangimarie have been welcoming us very warm and friendly. The "encounter" was very private and personal. We had a really grat day including a close contact to the family and kids. They take their Maori heritage seriuos, in a very open, friendly but informative atmosphere. Singing the AEIOU-Song is so much fun! Thumbs up!

The moment we met this engaging couple, it felt like we were being greeted by family. From the welcoming ceremony to the explanations of Maori culture, we felt more and more connected to New Zealand and it’s native culture. For the rest of our weeks here in NZ we found connections to our time with them. It truly enhanced our whole vacation. We would highly recommend taking this tour, even if there’s only time for the short version. To our Maori whanau, Kia Ora!

First of all if you want a great experience while learning about Maori culture: GO ON THIS TOUR!
We got a very warm welcome from Mervyn, Rangimarie and the rest of their family in their home. They provided us with great insights in Maori culture as it was in the old days as well as in present day New Zealand. They showed us around their town providing us with a lot of historical information and showing us they have a lot of love and respect for the land and it's inhabitans. Afterwards we had a lovely meal sharing stories and we even learned a song!
Overall we were really glad that we saved learning about Maori culture for this last part of our honeymoon because we felt like we got to see the real deal (not some touristy mimick).

This was our 3rd visit to NZ in 4 years. On the advice of our B&B hosts in Ngunguru (Melva and Hilton), we signed up for a day with Tu Tika Tours. We had a truly wonderful, fun, tasty, and informative experience.
On our first NZ trip , we'd attended one of the big Maori cultural shows/hangi dinners in Rotorua, and while that was fun and a good experience, this was far more personal and meaningful. Mervyn and Rangimarie don't book too many visitors at once (we were the only two that day!) so you really have a chance to chat. Part of the tour is at their lovely home (they have a very nice veggie garden, by the way - I'm envious of their rain in NZ!). The children were at home and it was great fun having them be part of our visit. We also visited several sites which are not only beautiful but of great historical and present-day significance to the Maoris. Tu Tika Tours allows you not only to learn more about Maori culture, but also to share experiences of other cultures around the world.
Mervyn is truly a master storyteller - he tells the Maori origin story (or one version of it, as he says) in a way that I'll remember for a long time! Rangimarie's warmth and her care for her guests made us comfortable and relaxed, even while learning to weave flax flowers, and singing a song in Maori and English. Alas, my husband and I had more enthusiasm than musical skill, I fear!)
The hangi meal was wonderful - we admired the modern gas-fired version of a roasting pit! We also enjoyed the delicious bread and kina (sea urchin), which I'd never tried before but found delicious.
I won't repeat all the details of our visit, since other reviewers have covered a lot of what I could say, but If you're looking for an authentic experience and a chance to learn more about Maori culture from a delightful family, you really should schedule a day with Tu Tika Tours and become part of their whanau.
