Merci Marti !

This was a delight! Marti is so knowledgeable about the Market and Hungarian cuisine, and even though we peppered her with questions, she answered every one. It was so much fun. We first walked around the Market and received not only a history, but saw the abundance of fruit and vegetables for sale, and we even had a snack - Langos pancakes (a pancake with garlic sauce and a little cheese - perfect for you garlic lovers). Yum! Next she took us to her Cooking Flat which was beautifully laid out, as the pictures show. Lots of room to watch and cook and eat and talk. We made the meal ourselves, all from scratch, including the dumplings, and used the simple ingredients purchased at the market. These are simple dishes, and Marti helped us make them expertly. We had Sour Cherry Soup, Chicken Paprikash and Gundel Pancakes with chocolate sauce.
There was wine with the meal, homemade raspberry sauces to make sparkling sodas before, and even sausages and pickles to try. It was a lovely meal with more food than we could eat, simply made, and easily cooked. Marti even made my husband feel like a chef. It was great. We would highly recommend this as an addition to your Budapest trip to get a great feel for the cuisine and the people.

My boyfriend and I are both foodies and we both like to cook, so we decided to try a market tour with a local Hungarian chef. It was an amazing day! We met Marti, our chef and teacher, at the Central Market Food Hall, where we got to see and purchase local foods for our meal. Marti also got us a few extras to try, like apricots and cherries, which were both in season. After we acquired our groceries, Marti took us upstairs to try a traditional Hungarian food called Langos, traditionally topped with sour cream or garlic (we tried both!), with our choice of beverage (water, soda, etc.). The price of the cooking class included all things purchased at the market.
From here, we went to the flat where we started our cooking class. It was so much fun! Marti taught us how to make goulash soup, hortobagy pancake with a chicken paprikash filling, and - the best! - Gerbeaud layer cake. While we were cooking, Marti offered us homemade Palinka, which was much better than any commercially prepared Palinka, and a variety of snacks, including the fruit we'd bought at the market, sausages, bread, and two types of peppers.
Cooking with Kitchen Pixie Budapest was definitely one of our favorite experiences during our week in Budapest. Not only did we learn about cooking, we learned about life in Budapest and got recommendations for restaurants in the area (Thank you, Marti!). But mostly, we loved cooking - and eating - the delicious three-course meal we prepared. We cannot wait to cook these things at home to share with our friends!

We’ve started making cooking classes a regular part of our travels. Learning about the place you are visiting through the food is such a unique experience. We did a lot of research before our trip to Budapest to find the right cooking class. We knew we wanted an offering that included a market trip and that was going to be more on the intimate side rather than a large group. We chose Marti and are very happy we did. She is so passionate about what she does and could not have been sweeter. The space you cook in is so homey and the meal itself was delicious. We were even able to take some leftovers, which we enjoyed over the next couple of days. In addition, we left with very easy to follow recipes for the meal we made and a special little gift from Marti. If you are looking for a culinary experience in Budapest, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better one.

Our private cooking experience with Marti was everything we hoped for and more! Her menu choices were just perfect. A wonderful tour of the market, and tasting delicacies and street food, a bit of history as she drove us to the flat where she cooks and then cooking and conversation. She was delightful and we were amazed at the wonderful meal we cooked together while we talked about life in Budapest. The very next day we recommended it to a mom and daughter we met at our hotel and they signed up. Such fun. Cant wait to try all the recipes at home for friends and family. A must do and totally NON TOURISTY!

My wife and I traveled to Budapest for the first time recently and booked the market tour and cooking class with Marti for our first full day in Budapest. What a BLAST! We really enjoyed every part of the experience! Whether you're visiting a country for the first time, or the 100th, an experience like this really helps to connect you in ways that nothing else can. Marti is a great cook/instructor, excellent guide, and a fun person with whom to hang out. (And her English is MUCH better than my Magyar!) We would do this again without hesitation, and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone!

Dear Karen and Michael,
Thank you for your review. The experience with you was unique (Farmer's market tour + cooking + Hungarian language lesson). I'm happy that the local ingredients are just as important to you as to me and I could give you a piece from Hungarian cuisine.
Köszönöm, köszönöm és I hope on day we will meet again. Marti

My husband and I came to Central Europe to spend 3 days in Budapest and then 3 days in Prague. This class was by far our favorite experience of the entire 6 days. There are extras and surprises all along the way. The dishes we learned were wonderful, but the best part was Marti herself: We met her at the front door of the Market and accompanied her as she purchased ingredients for the class. She answered questions and explained various things as we made our way along the stalls. Goods in hand, we went to the car, rode a short distance and parked near, or in, the Jewish Quarter and entered a building like all the others in the area. That is to say, an old and stoic structure several stories high, rich in history, a building that has seen better times. Up to the 2nd floor and we were ushered into a fully equipped, bright, modern kitchen and adjoining diningroom. At this point, we knew we were in for a great experience! These rooms were designed and furnished by a professional; someone with passion for the culinary arts. In short order, we were very pleased to see that Marti’s skills matched that passion.
As we worked our way through our chosen menu, we veered off-topic several times in our conversation (which I recommend) and learned many things which we will remember long after we have forgotten how to say “thank you” in Hungarian (keurseunum). If you care to scratch the surface of this soft-spoken, unassuming person, you will discover that she holds multiple degrees and has much more on her mind than paprika and dumplings. What a delight it was to spend some hours with a modern, young Hungarian who is firm in her respect for Hungarian heritage, AND with a keen and fearless eye to its future! Long story short - we were impressed. Oh, the food, you ask? Our menu was: Goulash, which, to be authentic, is - well, take the class and then you will know. :) We also made Pancake Hortobagy Style and Gerbeaud Layer Cake. Everything was very tasty and I can attest to its authenticity - my grandparents immigrated from Hungary.
On our first night back in the states, we both agreed we could do no better than to have the pancakes and the dessert again. Here they are, in all their glory.
Marti - keurseunum!!!

Dear Guy, Thank you so much for your long and detailed review. I am grateful for this because it helps my work and it is very important for other visitors. When I started to organise different culinary experiences for tourists, my target was: I wanted to share a lot of information with my guests about Hungary, not only local food.
I think about for example Hungarian language and it is very touching to me that you use it. Köszönöm (thank you).

Our Kitchen Pixie cooking class was wonderful. Marti offers different menus so we were able to choose the one that interested us most, a difficult decision because the options are all tempting. The menus feature family recipes.
We met at the historic Great Market Hall and chatted, shopped and sampled. Marti purchased the ingredients for our meal and things to taste while we cooked.
We then went to her charming flat in a residential building. The courtyard was being restored when we visited and it was inspiring to get a close-up of how Hungary is rebuilding. The flat has been modified to provide a large kitchen with a few cooking stations and a generous dining room.
While we cooked, Marti offered wine or her mother’s fruit concentrates mixed with sparkling or still water. There were typical Hungarian tidbits to try. Marti is very well organized. We moved smoothly, chopping, mixing and stirring from one menu item to the next. You can see her cooking training in how she sequences the preparation. Her enthusiasm and good cheer is contagious.
The food was delicious and beautifully served. We ate together and talked. Marti packed up some leftover strudel for us to take for later eating. Thank you again Marti!
