Greeted by a locked door and being told they are at full capacity before even asking if we had a reservation. Long story short, a five minute museum visit with about four/five cats and half cups of hot chocolate. Bitterly disappointing experience.

Dear Ana,
It seems there was some misunderstanding from the start. Reservations are required, and capacity limits are essential for the well-being of our cats and visitors. Your description of "four/five cats" and "half cups of hot chocolate" is inaccurate and unfair. We kindly remind you that our team is always available to clarify expectations and policies, it would have been great if you mentioned these to us on the spot instead of jumping to such a harsh conclusion.
Best regards,
The Cat Museum Budapest Team

It’s not a museum. There are 9 cats, very depressed. Not recommending it. You need 10mim for the whole place. It’s a waste of money

Dear Visitor,
Thank you for your colorful interpretation. Suggesting that our cats are 'depressed' is both baseless and absurd—they’re simply living their best cat lives, napping and relaxing. As for it ‘not being a museum,’ we kindly suggest brushing up on the definition of the term before jumping to conclusions. While we understand not every experience is for everyone!

Lovingly designed museum. The cats living there have enough retreats. They don't seem stressed despite the visitors. Very friendly staff. Delicious coffee:)
For animal lovers a recommended break from the city hustle and bustle or if you miss your own four-legged friends.

Make sure you reserve your time and buy your ticket online. I love that the wellbeing of the cats are very important to them, by limiting the amount of people allowed by each block of 1.5 hr. My recommendation would be to bring your own slippers, not sure how often the communal ones are desinfected, or if they do at all. It is a bit counterproductive that we have to use slippers to walk around to ensure the health of the cats while the restroom / toilet was not clean. In my opinion, calling it "museum" might be a little too much, it is more like a petting zoo / cats cafe, decorated with cats decor. The place is smaller than I expected, it felt crowded. The 2nd floor felt like DIY, some improvised structure that wiggles when people walk around. The whole time I was there, I felt like it might collapse at any moment. In general, I had a good time. The cats are calm and cute, staff are very polite, gift shop has a nice variety of items. A bit disappointed to find out the earring I got there were from Shein, they put a lot of stickers on the brand to cover it up. I would not have buy them if I knew.

This is so bad that it's almost hilarious, maybe the most unhinged place I've ever been. My mum wanted to go to the cat museum so along we go. No free drink offered as advertised, and none of the patrons that were there at the same time as us had a hot drink either, or souvenir for completing the quiz. You have to take your shoes off, which is fine, but they give you really scabby old slippers to wear that are different sizes and actually a bit of a trip hazard. The cats are so sweet, but some of them did seem unreasonably sedated, interesting to come away and read other reviews that suggest they also were concerned the cats have been sedated. Overall it's not a relaxing atmosphere, and infact a complete rip off, but we did spend the rest of the evening laughing about it so I guess you win some, you lose some.

Dear Visitor, Your review is very dramatic and highly irrelevant. Let’s clarify a few things: Our cats are certainly not sedated—this is an absurd and unfounded accusation repeated by people who may not be familiar with how relaxed and well-cared-for cats behave. The complimentary drink is offered to every visitor as part of their ticket, so if you didn’t claim yours, that’s on you. The slippers are provided for hygiene reasons, and while they may not be designer footwear, they’re perfectly functional.
If you came expecting a circus or some kind of over-the-top spectacle, you clearly misunderstood the concept of a museum dedicated to cats. We’re thrilled you found humor in your visit, even if your understanding of the experience fell short. It’s worth reflecting on whether public ranting is the best use of your energy. Wishing you all the best!

The place is cute but the cats (8) were all sleeping
Maybe it's just bad luck but it seems strange that no cat was awake and active... they seemed drugged. The cost is not worth the visit

Dear Visitor, Suggesting that our cats are ‘sedated’ is not only absurd but also disrespectful to the care and dedication we provide to them. Cats, as anyone familiar with their natural behavior knows, sleep for most of the day—especially in a calm and stress-free environment like ours. Expecting them to be awake and ‘active’ on demand reflects a misunderstanding of how animals behave.
As for the cost -which by the way includes a free drink and a souvenir in exchange for correctly completing our quiz-, it supports the well-being of our cats and the upkeep of the museum, which is far more valuable than the unfounded accusations in your review.

The place is very small and fills up quickly; the girls who work there are rude (they respond with a nice vaaffa printed on their forehead) and it is not a real museum, it looks like an overcrowded study room. Cats are definitely very cute but they look sedated.

Dear Visitor,
It’s disappointing to read such a review filled with baseless accusations and exaggerations. Our staff is consistently praised for their professionalism and kindness, so your claim about their attitude says far more about your perception than their behavior.
As for the cats, the suggestion that they are ‘sedated’ is entirely unfounded and frankly absurd. Cats naturally rest and relax most of the day, especially in an environment designed for their comfort—not for the entertainment of visitors expecting a performance.
Finally, this is indeed a museum, celebrating the cultural and artistic significance of cats. If your expectation was something else, that’s unfortunate, but it doesn’t justify attempting to misrepresent our space or our mission. Perhaps more thoughtful feedback would serve better next time.

This is a great little venture. The cats are super chilled and friendly. I took my son who is 8 years old and he really loved every minute of it.
I think most people visit because they want to interact with the cats. The walls are adorned with cat memorabilia and pictures but to be honest I wouldn't really visit for this, it just adds to the ambience. Its a cosy vibe and the cats are lying around in beds, sitting on chairs and just hanging out.
There are a few rooms where the cats can retreat to if they are feeling they want some alone time, which I thought was a good.
It was a welcome break from the cold outside, make sure you book ahead, I think they are always busy.

I visited this place after reading several reviews and suggestions on some blogs. I have to say that, in my opinion, I would not really call it a museum, as the "historical" objects on display were quite limited. The cats present, while adorable, seemed a bit annoyed by the continuous interaction with visitors, which is understandable. The space is quite small and admission, which costs €9 per person, includes a drink. Personally, I found the price a bit high. As for the staff, I did not find much friendliness; the reception was rather cold and it seemed that our presence was not particularly welcome.

Dear Visitor,
It’s interesting that you came here based on positive reviews, yet your expectations seem to have been wildly misaligned with what we offer. This is, in fact, a museum dedicated to cats and their cultural significance. Our space is intentionally cozy to ensure a calm environment for the cats, who, as living beings, have the right to interact (or not) as they please.
The entrance fee, which includes a drink, supports the well-being of our animals and the maintenance of the museum, making it a fair price for what is offered. As for the alleged lack of friendliness from our staff, we treat every guest with professionalism and respect. We communicate in English or Hungarian. If someone doesn’t understand English and only speaks Italian, that could also lead to misunderstandings.

The Cat Museum Budapest is like stepping into a quirky cat lover’s dream—a small, funky space filled with cat-themed art, toys, and memorabilia from around the world. It’s a wild mix of oddball charm and genuine affection for the feline species, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to pop art pieces that scream personality. You’ll find everything from cute to downright weird, and somehow, it works. It’s a bit on the small side, which keeps it from being purr-fect, but for cat lovers, it’s a gem worth visiting.
