The entire staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful. My son and I signed up for semi private lessons and Eli was an amazing instructor, who gave my 12 year old confidence to get up and ride the waves almost immediately. He had so much fun, he did another group lesson on his own later in the week. Everyone should try this at least once and there is no better, more beautiful spot to do it than Kahalu’u bay. Even better, they have an arrangement with a photographer, so when you do get to ride the waves, the moment is captured and you have some great photos to hold onto!

It was a really fun lesson with good waves that day. It got me hooked! It's also a good workout between the paddling and jumping up to a standing position on the board; now I know why surfers are so fit :-)

The staff was SO friendly. They didn't treat you like tourists, they treat people like people, family even! Was a bucket-list item to try surfing and to catch at least one wave, and with Corey's help I was able to catch a bunch!! He was super nice and patient, and broke things down in a really helpful and understandable way. He even gave me feedback after each run, helping me understand why I fell or what went well, which was SUPER helpful in figuring it out. Even the waiting time between waves was helpful! I tend to get anxious in the water sometimes, but I felt safe the whole time and overall it was a really phenomenal experience. Will definitely be back next time I'm visiting family on the big island. Absolutely my favorite 2 hours of the entire trip!! Thank you so much Corey!!

Can’t speak highly enough! Our surf instructor Corey was so personable and encouraging. He helped us successfully ride almost every wave we caught and cheered us on the whole time. Chris in the office was also so funny and helpful. We enjoyed our experience with Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea so much we rented snorkel gear from them and may just come back to rent surf boards and perfect this newfound hobby!

They started out very responsive to requests for information, which was helpful in choosing this one for a lesson. We had Corey for a private lesson with our daughter and he was great - asked questions, listened, assessed what she needed to learn, talked to her throughout the lesson in between waves giving advice and guidance, and adapted her lesson to her skills and goals before and during the lesson. Couldn't ask for a better surf lesson!

I booked a private surf lesson and it was great!
As I’ve been surfing before, we could cut the introduction short and went directly into the water.
My surf guide Ben gave me many helpful tips so that even the “waiting time” for the waves was useful.
Everybody was really nice and helpful!
I can definitely recommend them!

My 8-year old granddaughter had a great time, getting up on a wave herself and then riding tandem with her instructor, Corey.

The staff, equipment, and instruction at KBSS are all top notch. Everyone was super friendly and helpful in helping me get set up and out surfing. The best part was that while renting with KBSS I felt like I was a part of the Kahalu'u bay community, rather than just a tourist. And I have to give a special shoutout to Ben for being so flexible and such a great surfing instructor.

As en experienced paddler who is new to SUP surfing, I had trouble finding this specific type of instruction on the BI. Most offered just basic SUP instruction for first-timers, or traditional surfing. I contacted Ben, and he was happy to meet my needs and very flexible with the lesson time. Shop is perfectly located right across the street from the beach. I received helpful pointers on land regarding paddling technique, foot placement, etc prior to heading out to the water. Once in the line up, as waves approached, Ben put me in the right position and gave excellent instructions on when to begin paddling and foot work. This allowed me to focus on paddling without having to worry too much about where I was in relation to an approaching wave just yet - very helpful for getting a feel for the motion of the wave beneath me, balancing, and ultimately catching and riding without having to worry about too many things at once. And it worked! I was catching waves right away!
After awhile, we moved around to try and step up the degree-of-difficulty when it seemed appropriate. Ben's a nice guy and very patient. Overall, an excellent experience, and one that I'm able to benefit from as I continue to SUP surf after returning home. Mahalo!
