This was a fabulous tour. Our guide, Jeff, was incredible. He was so knowledgeable about everything, volcanoes, the observatories and the night sky. And so passionate about it! I loved that he sent us pictures of the astronomical sites we saw. The dinner was terrific, southwest chicken stew and the cookies were the bomb! I highly recommend this tour .

Guide: Jeff - Was very knowledgeable about Hawaii island and the stars. He was all about having fun and being safe. We appreciated him as our guide and would highly recommend him.
Food: Honestly, I didn't have high hopes for our picnic dinner BUT, it was tasty. The vegetable chili and the chicken stew were delicious. Our favorite was the vegetable chili. What took it over the top was the hot chocolate and Mrs. Barry's cookies while looking at the stars.
Stargazing: unbelievable! get your camera ready and don't forget to take videos.
Pack warm gloves, beanies, thick socks and sweatpants because it is COLD!!! I wish I had brought more warm clothes, I think I would have enjoyed the tour more if I had the correct clothing packed. Lastly, make sure you use the bathroom at every stop.
This tour gets a 10/10 from us.

Our tour guide Jeff was great, and was super knowledgeable on the area and in the sky. Be sure to hydrate but not over hydrate as bathrooms can be few and far between on this trip. The chicken stew was a perfect meal in the cool weather and the hot chocolate and cookies while looking up into the heavens was incredible. We were on the tour on a night with a new moon and the amount stars was astonishing. Jeff was accommodating and was sure the guests were able to acclimate as we reached peak elevation. A great way to see the island in a way you would never expect!

We had an amazing time going to Mauna Kea and star-gazing. Jeff was our guide and his passion for what he does shined through. He provided good commentary, was interesting, and knowledgeable. We thought the trip worth every penny and highly recommend this tour.

Standing in a parking lot wearing the only fleece I brought with me under the enormous parka that the company provided in an expanse entirely devoid of life forms is not an image that we normally associate with Hawaii but there I was. 14,000 feet below, where the journey began, we could see the blue ocean, the palm trees and the golden beaches but here, we were in a different world. We watched the shadow of the mountain on which we were standing grow to our east and could turn around to see the sun set back in vacationland. It was, to say the least, a gripping experience. But the real show started once the sun had dipped below the horizon and the world that minutes before was bathed in light had been enveloped in darkness. That is, except for the sky above us in which first a few and then hundreds, thousands and millions of stars began to appear and, along with them what looked like clouds but were actually nebulae containing unimaginable numbers of stars too far away to be seen as individual bodies. It was one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring sights I have ever seen.
Jeff had met us in the parking lot at Waikoloa and loaded us into his van. On the way to the visitor's center at a mere 9200 ft, he provided fascinating insights into the country we were traversing, Hawaiian culture, geology and astronomy, all of which he was clearly as excited about as he hoped we would be. We were served dinner (a roll, chicken stew and tea) at the visitor center and climbed back on the van for the last 4,000 ft. climb to the top, being told about the various observatories on the summit and their respective functions. We arrived in time for the sunset and a brief tour of the area, learning to breathe slowly and deeply in the thin air. Once night set in, we descended 1,000 ft. to comply with a rule prohibiting headlights above that altitude where Jeff set up two telescopes, one of which could be looked through in the normal way and the other of which took and presented pictures of celestial bodies that could be viewed on an iPad like device (and were provided to us by email the next day.) I was, literally, starstruck.
Of all of the many tours that we have taken in Hawaii, this was by far the most awe inspiring for me. Nature was a big part of it but Jeff did his bit with his knowledge, enthusiasm and good old Hawaiian aloha. If you are looking for something a bit off the beaten path that will give you an idea of how amazingly diverse these islands are, or if you just want to see a lot more of the universe than you can from almost anywhere else. I highly recommend that you sign up for this experience.

The whole trip from being picked up on time in a nice vehicle to the star adventure. The guide we had was exactly what we expected. Very knowledgeable and fun to be with. The food was good and hot. The night started off with a great sunset that turned into a clear night of star gazing. The guide set up two telescopes and adjusted it to see the stars and planets. He also used a laser pointer that helped with identification of some star clusters. The hot cocoa and cookie was spot on for the chilly night!

This was an amazing tour!!! From the drive to the summit and back, this was defintely worth it. Jon was an amazing guide and added greatly to the adventure. This is a must do while on the island.

If I could give 100 stars, I would! Jason was such a phenomenal guide, and this was a awe-inspiring experience that I will always treasure. Jason connected so beautifully with each member of our group, and shared such a wealth of knowledge about astronomy, and most importantly about the connection to Hawaiian history, traditions and culture. Thank you for a life-changing experience!

Is the hooked parka and gloves to keep or are they turned back in at the end?

How do I choose pick up location. I don't see places to choose during booking process. Also, how do I know if all the people in one time slot have the same pick up location? or do they drive and pass by all 6 pick up locations?

When we made our online booking, we were asked which hotel we were staying. Upon receipt of the confirmation email, we were notified of the meeting point and time. Since we stayed at Kona, we were picked up at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel. We were advised to meet near the entrance of the parking lot. The tour vehicle came punctually.

We tipped 30 bucks for the two of us. Looking back , we probably should have tipped more bc it was such a great trip. Here’s a fun tip… when you pose for your pictures up there, make it look like you’re holding the sun in your hand!! Enjoy!

Can I bring my own telescope?

I’m not sure, but unless your telescope is super good I don’t see a reason to do so. Best telescope I’ve ever looked through.
Why is this tour 3-4 hours longer than the other Mauna Kea Summit tours offered by other companies? I know it includes dinner but other than that I don't really see any differences when reading about the tours.
