We had an AMAZING time on our snorkeling tour! Our group was super small and the crew was able to get us in the water next to pilot whales and sharks along with the typical reef snorkeling. It was AWESOME! You absolutely have to book them!!

Literally what an amazing day out on the ocean. The first spot was a little rough because there was a swell coming in from the south, so the two captain Taylor’s and Justice decided to go way out of the way up north down the coast to a beautiful secluded beach that was protected from the direction the swell was coming. On the way we saw a whole pod of spinner dolphins, and what an amazing treat. When we got to our second spot the water was so calm and the brightest blue I have ever seen. On the way back we were talking to Taylor about the Mantas and he said he would get us out the same evening. And if a secluded snorkel spot and spinner dolphins wasn’t enough the manta rays were absolutely incredible and the crew was fantastic. They were very informative and passionate about protecting the Manta Rays and making sure everyone was safe. They are professional and made everyone feel comfortable in the water. By far the coolest experience on the Big Island. I was skeptical at first but these guys are pros. I definitely recommend going on an adventure with Ocean Encounters while you are in Kona.

Cher, Zack & Sage made this experience amazing. Cher is extremely knowledgeable and answered all the questions, pointing out things to check out. Knowing that we had certified life guards and boat loaded with all the safety equipment helped to lesson my anxiety.

We felt like we had a personal guide in the water with Cher. She would ask of anyone wanted to follow her and since our family plus one other were the only ones, she pointed out everything she saw for us and brought us to every thing we would have missed had we ventured out on our own. Our boys, 10 and 7 felt so comfortable with her they stared to refer to her as their teacher. Even though they asked her over 100 questions, she was not annoyed and kept looking for an 🐙 for them. She saw a white tipped reef shark and asked of we wanted a picture and dived down for the shot! We'd them continue following her around as a personal guide... 😂
The check in process was aittle confusing as they were taking in two groups but other than that, of all the different snorkel tours we've done on the islands and on the carribbean on the past, they said this was their favorite.
The dolphins were right out of the docking area for viewing and the turtles were next to the boat while the captain was briefing us in the beginning. I don't think any of us heard a word he was saying as we were paying attention to the turtles.

My family and I had a fantastic time on the tour, and the staff couldn't have been more fun and accommodating. They went into the water with us, pointed out and taught us a bit about some of the sea life. I wondered if it would be worth purchasing a snorkeling tour rather than just snorkeling on our own at one of the beaches. It was definitely worth it, as the boat anchored in an area that is not accessible by land to anyone that does not have at least 35% Hawaiian ancestry, so it wasn't an area I'd otherwise have been able to visit. The number and variety of fish we saw were very different from what you'll see at the beaches -- beautiful and colorful, and there was a school of small blue fish that was jumping out of the water being chased by a bigger fish. Very cool to see! From the water, you'll have a beautiful mountain view of the shore, so when you're not looking down, the sights on land will be just as amazing. To top things off, the crew must've gotten word that the whales were active, as they detoured so that we could see breaching whales before docking back at shore. I would definitely recommend this tour!

What an awesome experience for my family! Our boat crew (Leena, Madi and Ree) were first rate. They were helpful, informative, and made our experience a memorable one. I highly recommend this Ocean Encounter trip.

The staff was so friendly, laid back, but informative, capable and helpful. They took time to stop so we could enjoy unexpected sea life, like turtles and Manta Ray (one breached and the crew was as excited as we were!) Great snorkle spots and they have noodles availble sobifnyou're not a strong swimmer or new to snorkling you ha e the helps you need. They took my sons GoPro to film an octopus and school of racoon fish that were deeper than he could get, so we have great video memories. Special HUGE thanks to Lena, Cher, Koa and Laura! You are all awesome!

Reviewing 230pm snorkel tour with Groupon. The young lady who checked me in was friendly and the process was easy. Captain Lena's enthusiasm set the tone for the trip. She was so happy you'd have thought it was the first time she'd seen spinner dolphins! Very positive & professional woman with a warm smile. Crew members Connor and Cher were both friendly and helpful as well. I needed extra help boarding due to a physical challenge and they were all accommodating and lent me their strength. They seemed attentive and friendly to all of the guests.
We saw the aforementioned spinner dolphins, a manta ray and a honu from the deck of the boat. There were plenty of reef fish to swim with at both sights. It would be a nice touch if the boat had laminated ID cards so people could identify what they saw. Also, this is not Fiji, so set your expectations of coral accordingly. There is quite a bit of motion both aboard the boat and in the water, so set yourself and your children up for success and take seasick meds before you check in if you are prone to mal de mer. There were maybe 16 of us and there was ample room for everyone and our stuff. I don't know what capacity is, but it didn't feel crowded. Noodles were available for those who desired them. Water, juice, and the typical snacks were provided, as was de-fog for your mask. I didn't check it out, but there is a head available if you need it. There is limited shade available, so if you need to stay out of the sun, make sure to position yourself near the front of the pack as you follow your crew down the walkway so that you can board first.
My only complaint is that it is a 3 hour tour, so now I have the Gilligan's Island theme song stuck in my head.
Overall a pleasant experience. Remember it takes a whale to tip the boat, but only you can tip the crew.

We booked the Ocean Encounters (or was it the Bite Me Company ... hard to tell .. they seem to use both names and boats) mid-day snorkel tour in March using a combination of a Groupon, an additional discount and a Groupon credit that reduced the cost to less than $10 for the two of us. I wish I could say it was worth that much. We have dived & snorkeled in the Caribbean, Fiji, Cook Islands, Australia, Bali, Central America, Canada, and I have to say that I have never encountered such a poor selection of dive sites, a staff so uninterested in their customers or such unethical behaviour. Where to start?
First, the dive sites – one just south of the harbour entrance and one in an area just south of the airport – were barren with virtually no live coral, few fish and very poor species diversity (although clarity wasn't bad, it wasn't much of a benefit with little to see).
Second, the crew's interaction with their customers almost non-existent, consisting of a very brief introduction to explain procedures then ... nothing. When the boat was running, they disappeared – either forward near the head staring at their electronic devices or talking to each other, or up on the flying bridge with the pilot. When we were snorkeling, they were off on their own, totally ignoring their customers as they looked for their prey. When we were re-embarking, they were out of sight, offering no help to the people climbing up the ladder with their gear (and many were inexperienced and needed the help), something I have never seen before with any other operator.
Third, and in my mind, most importantly, was the unethical practice that we observed. One of the staff caught an octopus, which she showed to a few customers as she brought it back to the boat. We watched her as she swam surreptitiously to the bow, hoping to get a photo when she released the animal. We were quite shocked when she killed the animal and passed it in a plastic bag up to the pilot standing in the bow. Now, I don't know what the Hawaiian recreational fishing regulations might be, but that isn't the point. This was advertised as an ocean encounter, not a hunting trip. I had to wonder if the sites were chosen, not for what the customers might see, but for what the crew might take home for dinner.
In summary, bad snorkeling, bad crew, and an apalling level of unethical behaviour. Avoid this one regardless of the price.
