To say that this trip was a once in a lifetime experience would not be an exaggeration! My sister and I went on this trip with high expectations given all the strong testimonials we found on TA; glad to say those reviews were all true! We were impressed by the professionalism and caring of Zavkhan throughout the whole experience. Everything from the website to the very patient and thorough responses from John, Jen, and the Zavkhan team to our endless questions prior to the trip and during the trip made us feel like they had our backs.
My sister and I both had experience riding horses before but had pretty much zero camping experience. As they say, as long as you have a good sense of adventure, you will be fine, and we had a lot of fun learning how to camp! This trip is everything that is promised - amazing hardy Mongolian horses that you bond with throughout the trip, really welcoming and friendly local team of wranglers and the opportunities to meet some of the families in the area, stunning landscapes, the most stars I've ever been able to see in my life, and a grand adventure from start to finish. We were also quite lucky in having a great group of people to travel with, and have made friendships that we hope will continue for years to come.
Some tips! We went on the late September Altai trip that also went to the Ulgii Eagle Festival. They are not kidding about the cold weather - bring long johns and thermals and lots of layers. There are also extra blankets and hot water bottles available - make sure to ask if you get cold at night! Try your best to stay up and bond with the group and wranglers - one of our regrets was letting the cold drive us to early nights in our tent, and not hanging out more.
Special shoutout to our brother from another mother: our translator Hamza, our amazing trip leader Janni (Lansi! Lansi! Lansi!), our very patient head wrangler Muikthan, and all the rest of the team. They were always considerate for our safety and comfort, and made sure we all had loads of fun!

The most well organised, well prepared and well hosted trip I have ever been on!
I loved the authenticity of the trip, the adventure, the horses and the people. I felt so safe and looked after that I could completely relax, take in the really beautiful scenery in the best possible way, and just thoroughly enjoy this amazing trip!

Well organized, safe and fun. More than a trip...an adventure, once in a lifetime. The staff was great (guide, wranglers, drivers and cook). I enjoyed the 3 visits with the inhabitants. We played with the kids. My horse was obedient. No falls, a lot of rides and beautiful weather. I was happy I took lessons to help me feel comfortable on the horse. I just st loved the camping in beautiful sites. I travelled in more than 50 countries in the world and this one is in the three best ever, if not the first!

This was an excellent trip. The freedom and relaxed approach to the route and itinerary lead to very fun and enjoyable trip.
The crew and staff were all excellent and hard working.
If you are interested in a bit of adventure get on the Altai Trek quick before it gets too crowded with other groups.
And it's a fair bargain for what you get. But being very confident/comfortable on/around horses/animals is a must to make it even more enjoyable.

Hi Tom,
Very glad to hear your words! We will make sure the area doesn't get too crowded - remote tourism must remain sustainable, and low-impact, in our opinion.

Great people, vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, beautiful horses and delicious food. I would absolutely recommend this trip to fellow travellers and wouldn’t hesitate booking another trip with Zavkhan in the future. This trip would suit those who like the outdoors, don’t mind getting a little dirty, are happy immersing themselves in another’s culture and of course, love horses! You don’t have to have riding experience to join these trips however to make the most out of the experience I would recommend being fairly confident in the saddle. Our trip leaders, wranglers, cooks, drivers and interpreter made my trip all that more enjoyable and they are honestly there all day every day making sure you are having a good time. If you have a deck of cards, pack them in your bag. It’s likely you’ll put them to good use and it’s a great way to have fun with the team as most of the team don’t speak English.
Thanks for a fabulous trip Zavkhan Team!

Zavkhan provided a unique and authentic insight into the vastness of Mongolia and the peoples connections to their animals and land. For people who love horses, riverside camping, roaming across landscapes, genuine cultural experiences and exchange, the Classic Trek, takes you off the beaten track and provides an extended time to connect to the natural rhythms and a change to disconnect from the distractions of new feeds, work and other issues and unwind. Zavkhan Classic is ideal for a group of friends or the solo traveller.

everything has been amazing. A true adventure, personally would recommend to anyone who wants to loose them self in nature surrounded by horses as well as having the chance to really get to know the locals and their culture. you get to see some places that are breathtaking and that the normal tourist wouldn't even dream to see.

I loved it! The people, the vastness of the area, the nature, the horses, the stars at night, the silence. Challenge & adventure. This was exactly what I was looking for and so much more.
All risks were managed by professional team. They were taking care of us making sure that we can enjoy all of the above with no care in the world.
But be ready for no phone or internet, no toilets, no hot water, no chairs and (most difficult one!) - no wine or G&T.

Excellent trip in June 19 in Katon-Karagay NP; great selection of forward going, race friendly horses, helpful and generous local rangers, and great base camp experience with all of the Zavkhan team- particular kudos to the cooks. Our group of 8 experienced daily gallops, snowy passes, herds of wild horses, Kazakh games, and all manner of delicious local goods. The camping set up was good, with a welcome sauna halfway through, and the stunning locations made up for the mosquitos. Not a single other tourist sighted over the 13 days. Would recommend.

Hello and thanks for the recommendation! August sees fewer mosquitos but probably chillier nights and high places. Thanks for mentioning our very hard-working staff and cooks. They deserve so much credit, because none of us would be very happy without all the tasty food to keep us going.
Thanks again, best,
Jen, John, and the ZT Team

I joined the July 2019 Zavkhan Classic trip and still find it hard to put into words how incredible the experience was. If you love adventure, the great outdoors, experiencing new cultures and meeting amazing people from Mongolia and across the world, this is the right place for you! If you already know you love horseback riding (like I did), that is a bonus, but there were a few on our trek with little to no prior experience that still had a fantastic time. Zavkhan Trekking is a great company that goes above and beyond to give their riders a unique and wonderful experience in Mongolia.
The Mongolian horses are brilliant and not like any type of horse you would ride in the West. Although small, they are hardy and have no difficulty with 6-8 hour days racing across steppes (if you like that), climbing mountains and crossing swamps and rivers. The wranglers do a great job matching riders with horses that will accommodate each rider’s level of riding experience, giving everyone the chance to challenge themselves and become better riders while at the same time still making sure everyone felt comfortable each day.
The Zavkhan staff including trip leader, wranglers, cooks and drivers make every effort to ensure the treks are enjoyable for everyone. Our trip leader, Haldi, was truly fantastic and really made our experience unique by being able to provide personal insight on local cultural practices, on the riding culture and many other topics. We couldn’t have had a better leader and friend! Despite the language barrier with some of the Zavkhan team, it is easy to bond with them if you make an effort. Sharing snacks and playing cards always helps pave the way! The food during the trek was way better than expected and we had plenty of opportunity to try different Mongolian dishes, but also had some more western-style foods available as well.
One of the things I was worried about prior to my trip was drinking river water. There was filtered water available anytime you were at camp and you could easily fill up your water bottles for the rides. We had no issues with people getting sick on our trip. From a camping perspective, I found it pretty easy to adapt to the daily routine of putting up and taking down my tent (I think by day two or three I could do it in about 3 minutes and I hadn’t really camped since childhood). Remember you are camping, so things do require a little bit more work than if you were in a hotel or home, but the whole experience is so worth it!
Needless to say, I will definitely be returning for more adventures with Zavkhan!
A couple of tips – 1) if your skin has a tendency to burn and you will be trekking during the warmer months, I would suggest bringing a few light-weight long-sleeve shirts to wear during the days as the sun is very strong in Mongolia and you spend a lot of time directly in it. The shirts will also protect you (mostly) from mosquitos and flies as you’re riding; 2) generally I don’t believe Mongolia gets a lot of rain, but our trip did have a few days where it rained for most of the day so it was really helpful to have a pair of waterproof pants (mine were just a shell that I pulled on over my riding leggings) and a jacket to keep dry, 3) for days where it may be chillier, it is nice to have neck warmer that you could pull up to cover part of your face while riding (this was suggested to me before we left UB by some of my fellow riders who were returning for their 2nd Zavkhan trek)
