Enjoyable and informative tour of Masada with an IDF veteran (AMI) who was both knowledgeable and entertaining. He's from this area and has deep knowledge of the distant and recent history. He presents a unique take on the source of Herod's riches which also made the experience more memorable and thought-provoking. It was also nice to have a relaxing end-of-day experience on the shores of the Dead Sea.

The dead sea is a facinating destination and provides a unique experience. It is well set out and the facilities are clean and the staff hard working. But be warned take some jandles, boat shoes or flip flops as the stones are sharp when getting to and from the beach. The drive along the foreshore of the dead lake is rich in history and is a moving geological landscape. This is where having an expert guide makes all the difference. We had Orion who is not only well informed but personable and entertaining. Masada speaks for itself being a world heritage site. I am always cautous when it comes to safety yet once again they have nailed it with the gondola being modern and well maintained. The lunch stop provide quality well priced lunch options. However to see the dead Sea scrolls and enjoy lunch arrive organised. I suggest a quick lunch first then a visit to the facinating museum.

Step 1: You will go to a pick-up point in Jerusalem which has been given to you by the tour group. You will most likely meet at a point very close to your hotel. The pick-up points are near your hotels, very rarely are they at your actual hotel. You will be told to meet at 7:50. We didn’t get picked up until 8:30.
Step 2: At the pick-up point, a designated person will go through a checklist ensuring that your name is on the list for tours (multiple tours, not just yours). Once your name is confirmed, you and others will get on a charted bus and drive to the “master” destination.
Step 3: The” master” destination is only 10 minutes from where your pick up point was. While on the bus they read out names and which bus number you will need to get on. However instead of getting off the bus and straight onto a numbered bus they make you walk around a cramped café looking for a numbered table with a guide so they can then tell you to go have a coffee while they wait for everyone. The line for the toilet is very long so I do not recommend going.
Step 5: Once the bus left the “master” destination, all guests sat on the bus and the tour guide Frank spoke about the various sites that we were passing.
Step 6: After the long bus ride we reached Masada. You will enter a building and the tour guide will collect the tickets for the group. Once he has the tickets, he will distribute them, and then you will get in line for the cable car to take you up to Masada. Now on every group tour I have ever done the guide has been very upfront about timings, especially with large groups such as this (at least 30 people). Frank should have said, if you get lost or don’t want to follow me around Masada to hear about each ruin meet at the bottom at X time (because since the lunch place is at the same spot you really don’t NEED him again until it’s time to head to the Dead Sea). Instead, we got a sticker with his phone number – but that doesn’t work if you only have a data-only SIM like many travellers.
They really pack the cable car, so don’t be scared if there are so many people in the car and it feels a bit claustrophobic. They say this is normal. I thought it was too many people in the cable car, but I’m just informing you now, so that you won’t be terrified or shocked. The cable car ride is very quick, less than 5 minutes. Once you get to the top, you get off the cable car, and your tour guide will begin the tour.
It is a mountainous area, so you will do quite a bit of walking up a hill, but it is not so strenuous. Sturdy shoes are advised, because it can be rocky at certain areas. Do not wear heels. Our tour guide, walked us around the site, telling us the history of Masada. But his English was poor and he kept swapping to German for one family so we wandered off to look at things on our own, keeping an eye out for the group because he never gave us timings. We found an older lady from our group who had gotten lost and we helped her find the group again.
Step 8: When we saw that the group was ready to go back down we rejoined and got on the cable car. At the bottom 12.50pm Frank told us this is where we would be having lunch and people started to disperse without him telling what time to be back. I lingered and overheard him tell one family to be ready to go at 1.20pm. At 1.30pm Frank is still eating his lunch and heaps of us are waiting to go. A family comes up to Frank and asked for more time so he tells them they have until 1.45pm. We were really pissed off because you don’t just change times for one family – they should have managed their time better. And if at the very beginning Frank had said ‘we leave Masada completely at 1.30pm so make sure you eat lunch and have seen everything by then’ maybe they would have been able to do so. The fact that he wasn’t clear about times and then changed them was aggravating.
Step 9: Once we boarded the bus, we proceeded to the DEAD SEA…finally. As we approached the Dead Sea, our Frank gave us some rules regarding the Dead Sea.1) NEVER put your face in the Dead Sea (the salt will burn your eyes. 2) do not Swim in the Dead Sea. The Sea is 30% salt, so one must be careful as the buoyancy is very unique to anywhere else.
Step 10: Once we arrived at the Dead Sea, we went to the locker rooms to change into our swimsuits, then we walked down many steps to get to the actual beach and to walk into the Dead Sea. We were annoyed because it was getting cold by this time, if we had left Masada earlier it would have been warmer in the sea.
STEP 11: once our time at the Dead sea was over, we went to the locker rooms, changed, and reboarded our tour bus, and then were suddenly told that if were going to Jerusalem we had to get off this bus and get on another, this was never mentioned once throughout the day and if you were not paying attention you would have missed it completely. We were then told to tip the tour guide and driver.
STEP 12: The bus returned to Jerusalem and dropped us off at the closest destination to our hotel, listen carefully to hotel drop-offs as our hotel wasn’t on the list and if we didn’t pick that up when we did it would have became a last minute scramble in peak afternoon traffic.
Step 2: At the pick-up point, a designated person will go through a checklist ensuring that your name is on the list for tours (multiple tours, not just yours). Once your name is confirmed, you and others will get on a charted bus and drive to the “master” destination.

Appreciate your sincere and very detailed criticism of the tour. We are sorry that this, was the nature of your experience.
Logistics and tour management and details you mentioned (stickers etc yet are, extremely helpful items, one can approach any local store and they would help find a group/guide) )remain in the hands of the guide. Your crit on the management of how you thought the tour should be managed will be forwarded to the guide. He is certainly accountable.
Cable car etc is not in our hands and they certainly operate according to regulations.
Generally never had a problem with dropoffs. travelers know when it's their stop.
Your guide will be asked to report following this review and issues raised regarding his performance and service.

A great trip guided by Itamar. Very clear prior information send to me about where and when to meet the tour bus which arrived bang on time.
Some faffing around at the site (a cafe with a great city view but far too few toilets) where all the tour buses converge to then place people onto the specific bus for the tour, but although the instructions were pretty clear some people still didn't do as asked so our poor tour guide wasted around 20 minutes trying to find a few passengers.
Itamar gave us lots of information on the coach about the history of the area which was all fascinating.
Masada was really interesting and a great visit. The palace is an utter ruin but Itamar tried to bring it to life with his historical stories. The mountain is really high and the desert and Dead Sea views are breathtaking.
Then a stop for lunch at a truly awful and thoroughly crowded 'eating factory' (again with far few toilets for the masses of people there). The nearly 2 hours there was far too long. I'd suggest you just tell everyone to bring a packed lunch of their own and avoid this hell-hole.
Then to the Dead Sea where the 1.5 hours we had allocated actually went by really fast when you take into account the changing and a bit of a walk to the shore. I was rocky underfoot as you first get into the water so you have to walk carefully although there is soft mud then in most of the water. It was great fun to float there - a real life time experience and a great view across the Sea to Jordan.
Then back to the hotels in Jerusalem.
Well done Itamar - a very good and well organised tour. And you kept your calm so well when some of the people on the tour did not do as you asked (your instructions were really clear!) and you had to search for them at cabled car at Masada.

You can hike up the trail.
However, during the summer months, the Snake Pass may be closed because it's too hot and it may be a health hazard.

Hi! My friend and I are thinking about this tour tomorrow, Jan 2. May I know how many hours we can stay at Dead Sea to enjoy it? Can we enjoy the mud bath there as well?
Thanks!

This tour spent a couple of hours at the Dead Sea with plenty of time to bathe in the mud. It was great.
