        A beautiful experience

        We were looking to combine a visit to the Tiwanaku site and a walk along the shores of Lake Titicaca in one day; this tour met our expectations, and even more.
        Cadel, our Guide, and his experienced driver, went off the beaten track to give us incredible views.
        After the visit of Tiwanaku and lunch (excellent trout), on the way to Lake Titicaca, we marked a stop in an old hacienda, now abandoned; a leap into the past and a glimpse of what life could be like for Spanish ‘settlers’.
        It should be stressed that this one-day tour involves some constraints, in particular crossing El Alto during rush hour and occasional traffic on unpaved roads.
        In the end, count a dozen hours between Check-out (7:30 a.m.) and return, but the drawbacks are forgotten and the beauty of the sites and landscapes remains.

        Don't use, felt unsafe

        This is quite a hard review to write. Caleb is a nice person with a kind heart, and clearly going through a tough time personally, and clearly knew some extraordinary sites. However, it feels necessary to write what is unfortunately a negative review given that our safety felt at risk. Specifically, he drank 3+ beers (7% alcohol each) throughout the day's drive. Second, he smoked weed in front of one of our group at our first stop. Third, he would text while driving and as such veer between lanes. (Note: chewing coca leaves is totally the norm in Bolivia, and doesn't have negative effects on awareness/motor skills etc).

        So, after doing a little research I was able to connect this review with an actual booking. You were the sole American in a group from an economics in London. Within 10 minutes I realized a couple of things: 1. You have narcissistic personality disorder. Severely. 2. You were going to write a bad review when I made it clear that you were not the focus of the tour. I had half a beer with the group, which was mainly British, after asking them if they wanted one , and they enthusiastically asked me to join. The legal limit in Bolivia is .05% BAC, far stricter than most countries, including the US. A half beer does not even get me close. I joined the group for a small glass of beer with a late lunch. Again, we are talking a negligible amount. If I don't dodge potholes I will ruin my vehicle. I filed criminal charges against you in Bolivia for two reasons: 1. Slander, and I am happy to submit a blood/urine/hair sample to the police in your presence should you return to Bolivia. 2. Photographing military installations. I know there is a cold war going on. I don't want any part of it. I do not want US intelligence workers booking tours with us in the future. It has happened several times in the last year. If I suspect you are here to spy I will be turning your name over to the Bolivian authorities. I am contacting your institution, the London School of Economics, to inform them of that and other things I discovered about your time here. You will be arrested if you return to Bolivia. I have also suggested to the Bolivian authorities they pay closer attention to visa requests from your institution. As far as texting and driving is concerned.... After running a 15 hour tour to give you folks a spectacular day, you asked me to drop you off at a different location from the rest of the group. This I did at no extra charge while you repeatedly asked me to look up the address on my phone, while I was driving. I politely told you to look it up yourself. I offered to drop you off at the teleferico also, so my question is: if you felt unsafe, why would you not have taken the opportunity to take the teleferico, which I offered to pay for? As far as my personal problems go, they certainly do not affect my business, and although I shared a few aspects of my 13 years in Bolivia with other members of the group, I wasn't sharing them with a rude, American narcissist, my least favorite type of clients. Almost every negative review I have received has been from American clients with narcissistic personality disorder. I have zero patience for them, and when someone as obnoxious as you feels the intense desire to grab the spotlight from the spectacular scenery of Lake Titicaca it is in my job description to isolate you from the rest of the group. Re: Narcissistic Injury I will be filing civil charges against you in the United States over this false review as it is intended to harm both me and my business through slander.         Caleb was a fabulous guide! His knowledge of and passion for Bolivia were greatly appreciated and we immediately felt we were in good hands. We felt very fortunate and exceptionally well taken care of. Highly recommend!

        A great experience in the hands of a great guide. Not or the idle tourist.
        Caleb arrived a little late, having had to work with his team arranging two other tours. An American ex-pat, he has lived and raised a family in La Paz for 13 years. He has made friends in city and countryside and speaks with great love and respect about Bolivian history and society. He has also partied with everyone and likes a beer and a cheek full of coca leaves. He is excited and wants you to be excited by what he knows and what he shows you. Get ready for a great and unpredictable day.

        After slogging through the inevitable traffic snarl of El Alto we broke into the agricultural land surrounding Lake Titicaca and the indigenous communities scattered around it. Expect miserable roads and slow going everywhere. Welcome to Bolivia. We stop by the lake shore in several spots, walk in to see the wet lands, birds, boats, and explore a Spanish estancia abandoned after the feudal period was taken down. All the while, Caleb talks about Bolivian history, culture, coca, travel, Inca, Aymara and Oros civilizations, coca, economy of the area, Bolivian agriculture and coca. We stop to say hello to people Caleb knows in the Village of Tiwanaku. Eventually - and later than he planned, we arrive at the Tiwanaku ruins where we have a lunch of the best damn fresh Titicaca trout, making this one one of the best entrees ever eaten.

        Gabriella, a native woman with excellent English, takes us through the ruins at Tiwanaku. She has a great knowledge base and offers some funny observations, takes us into the museum to see more magnificent stones and sculptures.

        The roads back with expert driving were still slow and rough. El Alto is still a mess to get through but our driver maneuvered though to our hotel after a 12 hour day. We had already scheduled a trip with Caleb the next day to descend into the Amazon cloud Forrest - another splendid day. Another story.

        So, if you want an easy time on smooth roads, don’t go - don’t even go to Bolivia. If you want a rough, authentic and adventurous time, this is your chance.

        Went to multiple sites on Lake Titicaca, wetlands, "beaches".
        Stopped at additional archaeology sites - full of bonuses.

        A great day trip
        My wife and I had a fantastic day visiting Tiwanaku, Titicaca and some "off the beaten track" sites. Caleb is an incredibly knowledgeable guide who'll teach you lots about Bolivian history and culture - and cook you pizza on the shores of Lake Titicaca with no one else around! Would definitely recommend.

        Great day trip when in La Paz
        Very friendly American Expat who owns and runs most of these tours. Its honestly a must if travelling in La Paz !! You see sights that most tourists dont get to see and its an affordable day trip.

        Private tour through exclusive and authentic places, with good cultural and historical contextualization

        We had a great experience on the tour with Caleb. He really knows Bolivian geography, history and culture, and so is able to provide information and show places off the common tourist radar. Scheduling the tour was smooth, Caleb picked us up punctually near our hotel and we had a relatively peaceful trip to Tiwanaku, despite the chaotic traffic in El Alto. Even with some unforeseen events along the way, Caleb did his best to meet guide Gabriella and begin our tour of the Tiwanaku ruins, which are spectacular. A place with a different atmosphere, full of mystery and history, excellently explained by Gabriella.
        Following the tour towards Lake Titicaca, we passed the ruins of an old farm on the banks of the lake. Another beautiful place, very peaceful, there was no one there, exclusive to us. After passing through beautiful rural roads and spectacular views of the wetlands bordering the lake, we finally arrived at a beach on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca. An authentic and beautiful region, where there were practically no tourists other than us. After having lunch enjoying the view on the lake's edge, we visited another beach on the lake, almost on the border with Peru, where we were able to see flamingos and a beautiful sunset. We also had an off-road experience to climb a hill and enjoy a panoramic view of the lake, before returning to La Paz.
        All in all, it was a great experience we had, just the way we liked it, more intimate and authentic. In addition to the good conversations and knowledge transmitted by Caleb, who gave a deep historical and geographical context of all the places we passed through, which enriched the tour even more. He is a very sincere person and expresses firm political positions when explaining the historical context of the country and the world. We don't always agree with everything but he is always respectful at all times. In short, a perfect tour for those looking for more authentic experiences in fantastic and exclusive places near La Paz, getting away from the beaten path.

        If you’re alone or a woman, please don’t take this tour. Caleb is unprepared, unpredictable, and heavily under the influence. Caleb changed the pickup time from 7:30 AM to 8:10 AM. He showed up casually around 9. First impression: his clothes were stained and slept in. The first thing on the agenda was for me to run to an ATM to withdraw money for Tiwanaku entrance fees which were supposed to be included in the tour. He said, “I’m usually very organized.” Next, he asked for 10 Bolivianos to buy a packet of flatbreads while driving. To his credit, he did reimburse the fund as promised. As I tried to settle into a damp seat lacking a headrest, he incessantly talked about Bolivian history throughout the long drive. It appeared as though he was fighting through some serious hang-over from the night before by reciting a dull history outline heavily infused with Marxist agendas and conspiracies. Coca leaves mixed with baking soda—that was the panacea he recommended for every possible ailment. And he was a true believer and an avid practitioner.
        At Tiwanaku, Caleb introduced us to Gabriela who did a fantastic job explaining its history. When we arrived, she was visibly frustrated with Caleb because we were more than an hour late. Despite, she gave a fabulous presentation in excellent English. When we applauded her, Caleb made a point to discount her accomplishment by stating, “What she said is mostly BS.” What a way to go team!
        Pros: Delicious pizza and wine provided by Caleb, unconventional tour sights (abandoned hacienda, hilltop view of Lake Titicaca), Gabriella
        Cons: tardiness, unpreparedness, damp seats, unprofessional appearance, unsolicited history lessons heavily marked by Marxist sentiments, constant fear of the van breaking down and getting stranded in the middle of nowhere

        Sir, I am going to be quite frank here.... If half of what you wrote were true, I would be apologizing right now. As an American I am usually very happy to receive guest from my native country, Republican or Democrat. I have found political affiliation to have no bearing on my American clients' enjoyment of Bolivia or my experience, good or bad, with them. I cater to everyone, and the people who have loved travelling with us range from LDS missionaries to gay married couples. I find good people come from all walks of life. Unfortunately, I am sometimes reminded why I expatriated from the United States. I have had 5 bad reviews in 10 years. All of them are from American clients. Two didn't even travel with us. I have terminated two tours in the last ten years due to rude and racist behavior. Both of them were with American clients. I have lived here for 12 years, my son is Bolivian and of native blood, and for all intents and purposes, I am Bolivian at this point. Like the people in the communities I tour, communities that I have been welcomed into and am part of, I chew coca. It is not an intoxicant. Nor was I under the influence, nor did I have a hangover. That is just pure slander on your part, sir. I recognize that there is a lot of political tension in our country, and for many Americans attacking other Americans who they believe are on the other "side" seems a logical course of action. I disagree with the sentiment. I believe that human decency is beyond politics to begin with. My last bad review was from Americans who were deeply offended when I told them the homicide rate in the US is higher than in Bolivia. That's not even an opinion. So, let's go over the things you wrote, much of which I am calling out as lies. First off, you are not a woman, nor were you a solo traveler. Most of my reviews are from women travelers. Many of them travelled solo with us and had nothing but positive things to say. I am a big believer in letting women speak for themselves. If I tick off any chauvinists in saying that... good. As it was a short notice booking through a third party, I had little time to prepare while returning late from a tour. I accepted the booking because, as a traveler myself, I wanted you to see Lake Titicaca before leaving Bolivia. I believe empathy is an essential part of being a good guide. So, if I return to my house at 10 pm after running an incredible tour with some great people and find a booking for 7:30 am the next morning, I sometimes need to push back the start time. I arrived at 8:30, not 9, after washing the van from the previous day's tour and buying the necessary items to prepare a good lunch and have a decent bottle of wine for you. Find me a grocery store in La Paz that opens before 7:30. So if you had booked with us, in advance, there wouldn't have been an issue. As you booked with a third party, on short notice, and I don't receive payment for several days, I did ask for you to cover the entrance to Tiwanaku and said you would be immediately reimbursed, which you were. I have had to do this a few times in the last ten years. As Bolivia is well known for being a chaotic place, on those few occasions, up until now, everyone has been understanding. Would you have preferred I pushed the tour back to 9:30 to hit the bank? As a small business owner I don't have the resources of a large company. Neither does Luke Skywalker have the resources of Darth Vader, and some people would rather have Lord Vader as their guide for just that reason. As a guide, tour company owner and traveler, I know that communicating and booking directly with the people I hire for guide services, in advance, will ensure I get the experience I am looking for. Anyone who believes in small businesses is a friend of mine. The seats in the van were not wet, your chair most certainly had a headrest and the van was perfectly sound. I have never had a breakdown on a tour. I will say that again. In ten years of running tours in Bolivia, some of the worst road conditions and traffic on Earth, I have never had a breakdown or an accident while running a tour, period. I asked if you had ten Bolivianos to buy the bread because the Laja bread is not to be missed. It's amazing. No bread vender has change for a 100 Bs note in El Alto. If I had gone to get change to buy the bread because I really wanted you guys to try it you would be complaining about that. Almost everyone I guide is pleased by my enthusiasm to share what Bolivia has to offer. I paid you the ten back as soon as I had change. Snacks are not included in the tour by the way, but really, what is 10 Bolivianos if my clients get to sample some amazing bread? I wasn't buying it for myself, remember? Maybe people only think of themselves where you come from? Incessantly talking about the history... For half the drive I was silent because you and your companions were talking over me, ignoring me and after you began using lewd language I knew what kind of day it would be. Gabriela... This part cracked me up. You were the only people last week who didn't tip her, you practically ignored her when she tried to say goodbye to you, and never did I say anything about her info being BS. If you go into any academic department, in any university, find me two professors who have the exact same views on their fields of expertise. Gabriela and I may disagree on some things, but given the lack of conclusive archeological evidence in such a disturbed site as Tiwanaku, one thing we can agree on is that there are still many aspects of Tiwanaku history that are still undecided and open to interpretation. Jiminy Cricket! Both Gabriela and I wonder why the United States' "History" Channel wants us to believe that aliens built Tiwanku. (Funny how no one ever says that about ancient European sites, isn't it? Most of us Bolivians find the implication obviously racist and diminutive of Native American peoples by the way. But think what you want.) Gaby and I have a great working relationship and I can promise you neither of us is frustrated with the other. You didn't mention that we were late because of road construction in El Alto (my fault too?) and this may be un-Marxist of me, but Gabriela works for me, not the other way around, and she would tell you that herself. I will conclude by saying this: If almost all of my negative experiences with rude, hostile and racist clients since opening my business were with Americans, three quarters of those were from Southern California. I know the place well, and there is a certain arrogance that seems to surround the culture there. Why is that? The sentiment is palpable to others. My London clients have more to feel proud of, yet they are not arrogant or rude. If I made the comment that it was funny how the world's wealthiest region had the most destitute and homeless it was just a simple observed truth with admitted rhetorical implications, not me attempting to subvert you into becoming a communist, sir. No one left, but a few Americans, who think the CIA running cocaine out of Latin America is a conspiracy theory. That is our history. It is taught in school here. Look up "Klaus Barbie" for Pete's sake. Find me a New York Times reporter who would dispute that. You folks seem to view others as being beneath you, trivial and insignificant. Many of us around the world (and in the U.S.) are thoroughly bored with arrogant Americans, and it is causing a great deal of harm to my country, so I will say this to you, sir, and any others who might happen along this: please, we have enough problems already as a nation without you folks playing poor cultural ambassadors at our country's expense... stay home!!! As an American I sometimes feel ashamed. I deal with discrimination daily for my country's sins. I have never had an issue with rude Chinese or Russian or German.... clients. I guided members of a royal family a few years ago and they displayed far more humility than you. I mentioned that my previous day's clients had been from two other states, Alabama and Florida, and you exclaimed "ewwww", yet both Gabriela and I thoroughly enjoyed their company and neither of us enjoyed our experience with your group despite trying our best. While I have had good experiences from Southern Californian clients... if you are superficial, rude, sexist or racist or just plain ignorant and cut off from reality, please, book with someone else, or better yet, go to Peru and skip Bolivia. If you are looking for enthusiasm, knowledgeable guides and authentic Bolivian experiences in the most spectacular spots that most tour companies don't even know about, we are waiting for you.
