We did this tour last March and our guide/driver was Caleb, a fellow American. He picked us up from our hotel and off we went. We started the tour to
Tiiwanaku and met with our awesome female guide. I forgot her name but she speaks English well and was able to provide us historical data about the place. You can tell her enthusiasm as she tells us every details of the ruins on site and artifacts inside the museum. One of my most favorite about this tour is eating at this restaurant. We had trout and it was really delicious. Since it’s a private tour, he took us to some, off the beaten path locations like this old, run down hacienda. It was a unique experience and I’m glad we did it. The best part was going to a different side of Lake Titicaca where no tourists goes. It was so serene. We were able to take a small boat and enjoy the lake for as long as we wanted. We didn’t feel rushed. Caleb allowed us to just enjoy every location for as long as we wanted. If you want to go to places not swarmed by tourists, then take this tour. It is worth it.

Good communications with Caleb from the start.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was only me on the trip - I had not realised that "Private tour" meant just me - most of the Titicaca trips from La Paz involved getting public transport up to the lake, so I took "Private" to mean that Caleb was using his own transport. So this was a massive plus for me !!

Caleb turned up bang on time and we swiftly left the city to get around the protests which had been going for a few days.

We drove through El Alto and got food for our picnic and stopped at a few other places along the way. Caleb had lots of information to share which was very interesting. We stopped at a hacienda on the way to the shore of Lake Titicaca, stopping off at some different view points along the way. Caleb arranged for me to go out onto the lake on a rowing boat (rowed by his friend) which was very nice.

He made lunch for us on the beach before we headed back to the ruins of Tiwanaku. He had arranged for a local guide to show me around the ruins. I had around 90 minutes there, for ME, this was longer than I needed, but for people with more interest in history it would be about right. The lady guide there was very knowledgeable and her english was good, but for me, there was too much information as I am more of a "walk around, look and leave" visitor to historical sites. This is a reflection on me and not the tour !!

We then headed back to La Paz through El Alto, we did hit the traffic and it was a long day but it flew by and I was extremely happy with all aspects of the day.

I would highly recommend Caleb as a guide and for how well put together this all was. I am extremely glad that I did not pick one of the lower priced generic bus trips to see the lake and Copacabana.

I can not say enough how much I enjoyed the tour with Caleb. It felt so authentic and off the beaten path. Caleb loves Bolivia and knows so much about its history. He is a great story teller which makes this experience truly unique. We visited the Tiwanaku ruins, a former Spanish hacienda and the lake Titicaca. Each of these places is full of interesting stories. Near lake Titicaca we met and talked to indigenous people who still live very traditional life. This was such an authentic experience for me.

I highly recommend this tour. Whenever I am back to Bolivia I would love to take another tour with Caleb as he knows this diverse country so well!

I cannot empathize enough how well I liked the tour with Caleb. He very obviously loves Bolivia and knows a ton about its history, politics and (since he is a tree biologist) the local vegetation. Whatever I asked - he had an interesting answer to offer. Not only did he tailor the tour to my interests, but we also made stops at the most non-touristy locations which gave me the feeling I got to see a glimpse of the real Bolivia and its lovely inhabitants. To mention one example, we made a stop at a former hacienda, where he explained about the conquest of the Spanish. Also, we had great home-made burritos and tasty wine at the lake.

If you are looking for a tour that is authentic and a bit off the usual grid - you will certainly not be disappointed.

P.S.: Dear Caleb, if you ever happen to come to Berlin - let me know. I would love to show you around.

All the best,
Katharina

Had a great tour and got more than the value of what we paid. Caleb not only took us to Tiwanaku and Lake Titicaca as promised, but also added on a few extended stops to make up for inclement weather, which he said would make our experience not as ideal as he wished.

He drove us to tiwanaku and introduced us to his partner, Angela, who gave us a tour of the ruins. She was fantastic... knowledgeable and passionate.

Next he drove us to an abandoned hacienda complex with ruins of living quarters and a church. He cooked chorizo in beer over a fire he started from scratch. We drank wine and ate olives while he cooked.

After going to lake Titicaca he gave us the choice of staying there despite the weather or driving into the Andes to reach the tip of the amazon rainforest. We chose to do that and the views and photo opportunities were great.

Caleb was knowledgeable and passionate about Bolivian culture. We discussed politics and history for hours and even stayed with him to enjoy some pizza at a local spot at the end of the tour. Tour was advertised as 8-10 hours but he stayed with us for 14 hours to make up for the weather when he didn’t have to. Great experience!

Thanks for booking with us, and it was my pleasure guiding you guys. I started this business out of a deep passion for this country, its incredible cultures, dynamic and breathtaking landscapes and the excitement and unpredictability Bolivia always provides. As Bolivia has become a more popular destination for tourists we now occasionally get people who are not fun to guide. This is not a great country for tourists and I sometimes feel caught in between Bolivia's idiosyncrasies and people who would be better off travelling to Disney World or on a cruise ship. When I get a couple of travelers like you guys I love my job, and I will tirelessly guide until I feel I've provided an amazing travel experience, no matter what weather or politics might throw at us. Thank you. Hope to see you both again. Kind regards, Caleb

Like the other reviews say this tour is different and less touristy than others which was a positive. We had a nice quiet tour at Tiwanaku with Angela which was great. And the quiet lunch on the shores of Lake Titicaca was much nicer than fighting the crowds at Copacabana.

On the less positive side, the guide, Caleb, prides himself that his tour is a bit more ‘adventurous’ than advertised. Once we’d taken several detours on suspension-rattling back roads, he stopped into a store & came out with a large bunch of coca leaves & bicarbonate of soda. Over the next few hours he chewed coca constantly, expressing the view that it is the way to integrate and be accepted by local Bolivians. As the day progressed he became increasingly vocal about his political views and thought it was hilarious to cut up other drivers when we hit bad traffic in El Alto. Ironically he told us that he saw about one fateful accident a month on the roads normally caused by the drivers chewing too much coca and getting over cocky. By the end of the day and 70km of back roads, we were nervous wrecks in the back of the car and we’re relieved to make it back to our hotel in one piece.

I am sure that fearless people of all ages will love it and the views were spectacular but it’s worth knowing what to expect.

"Pompous, rude, cynical... but altogether a couple of nice blokes" While I appreciate you and your husband booking a tour with us, and for the most part enjoyed your company, when someone begins the day with "I am the dean of a prominent financial university in the United Kingdom" in a "you'll lick the filth off the bottom of my shoes" voice I know what sort of day it will be. Most attempts I made to explain the history of Bolivia were met with your husband's rudely timed throat clearing. I usually go over 10,000 years of it in as little or as much detail as my clients want with Angela providing the Tiwanaku era at the site. I never could get into a rhythm with the two of you. It made me wonder if both of you worked in education, or just your husband. I am surprised to get a compliment on lunch. Listening to your sarcasm while I was cooking for you ("How's the "chef" doing"?) was quickly silenced from both of you after the first bite. Nothing like making someone eat their words with delicious food. Was it the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich on fresh baked corn bread I cooked for you over an open fire, after handing the two of you cold beers and listening to your insults, or was it my butter/beer carrots with fresh local herbs? As there were a lot of parties on the day we ran the tour, and I have lived here a number of years, am married to a Bolivian, have a Bolivian son and live in a Bolivian household, in reference to you mentioning my comment about chewing coca as a "way to integrate and be accepted by local Bolivians" I was directing it at the two of you, for two reasons: 1. The two of you looked rather absurd to the locals for some reason or other (they were pointing at you and laughing at the party we stopped at in the village of Tiwanaku) and I thought it would make you guys look a little... "cooler" or acceptable to the "locals". "When in Rome" right? 2. I was willing to give anything to see either one of you with a little coca juice dribbling out the corners of your mouths myself, and the predictable fits of laughter from onlookers. In reference to my own chewing, I integrated into this culture years ago. Be it lime with stevia, baking soda or ashes from a fire (I recommend trying the coffee flavoured bicarbonato) you need to add an alkaline substance to the leaves for them to work and they're about as much an intoxicant as strong coffee. If you thought my chewing coca was uncouth I thought your sarcastic comments were too. If someone can show up to my hotel on time, run an 11 hour tour, drive, lecture, cook, and maintain the hours of the itinerary flawlessly through absolute chaos I would not fault them on chewing a little coca (you exaggerated how much I chewed just a bit). If I do everything I advertised I would, professionally, if someone doesn't like me as a person and are going to fault my character despite me giving them 110% over the course of a 13 hour work day they can kiss me between the cheeks. Most people aren't so aloof and like that I act myself with them. You forgot to mention we ran the tour for you on 6 de agosto, Bolivia's independence day, and that we ran the tour for you on short notice. El Alto traffic is some of the worst in the world when there are no parades. If I didn't know the roads as well as anyone who drives taxi I would not have known the clever bypasses on those suspension rattling roads that allowed me to run the tour for you on a national holiday. Most people credit me for that. Here's a biggie, if you are fainthearted in a backseat don't remind your driver of a dinner reservation you really want to make. I drive in Bolivia every day. I have a family and would not risk returning home safely to them at night for anyone. I doubt either you or your husband would survive 5 minutes in El Alto traffic without causing an accident or having to pull over and quit. Driving aggressively, weather or not people from outside Bolivia like it, is the normal here and if you can't drive aggressively you won't go anywhere. On a final note, discussing the politics of Bolivia is part of how I conclude with explaining the 20th/21st century history of Bolivia because of the obvious relevance. I try to be as objective as possible. Having seen injustices on a level I hope you never have to witness yourselves (kids in the upper Amazon with cognitive delay and brain damage drinking water with 50 times the acceptable mercury levels from gold mining for example) it is hard to be entirely dispassionate about what you've seen. Given your respective views on politics, immigration and us commoners that I had to listen to it comes as no surprise that kids in the upper Amazon with brain damage were of little concern to you so long as the gears of industry and commerce continue to turn in right mercurial fashion. In reference to your future travel plans and my recommendations for a 2 day road trip from Nashville: Take I-40 eastbound from Nashville. Leave by 6:30 am. That should get you to S.R. 66 southbound to Gatlinburg by 10 am. Enter Smokey Mountains National Park at Gatlinburg and take a left onto the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound. It is one of the prettiest drives in the Eastern United States. You can find beautiful hiking along the way to Asheville, and in Asheville great food, music and lodging. Be sure to drop the English patrician act before going out to see some live music. The locals don't respond well to it.

We had only 5 days in La Paz and wanted to see and experience local culture, history and learn about country’s current events as much as possible. The private tour to the historical Tiwanaku ruins (with a local historian and archeologist ) was thorough and informative dive into country’s deep history. The lunch was stunning; served by a local village restaurant chef. The tour then continued through breathtaking scenery all the way to the beaches of lake Titikaka. During the entire trip our tour guide Caleb shared stories and experiences about the country’s cultural rich heritage, historical background, past and present political situation. He was an excellent resource and an exceptional driver. On the way back we got stuck with bumper to bumper traffic in El Alto but with skill and tremendous patience Caleb managed to get us back for our dinner reservation.
The Solstice Tours is a family company and I can only thank Caleb and his family for an amazing experience and I highly recommend their tours for everyone!

This tour was great! It’s off the beaten path for sure; we were the only people at the Lake. It was a perfect day. We had a good picnic lunch at the lake and really enjoyed the ruins.
