Fantastisk dagstur med dyktig guide og sjåfør
Vi hadde en trivelig dag sammen med vår faglig dyktige guide, Sherif og en sjåfør som klarte seg godt i traffikken i Kairo. Gutten vår hadde bursdag og de kjøpte kake til ham. De var hyggelige og gav oss en god opplevelse. Kan anbefales!

The driver’s car was clean and he was very helpful/respectful. He also drove safely and not “Cairo-style” which I suspect is to accommodate passengers who are used to a different style of driving. There are transfer options that are cheaper but I recommend this one if you are looking for a stress-free ride and feeling very comfortable.

Great informative tour by Rania. But the real MVP is Mahran our driver aka the Egyptian Vin Diesel. He is safe, funny, accomodating, good conversations, and very attentive to his customers. He was so awesome that we requested him for 2 other tours to follow. Ask for him and you will not be disappointed!

We were very excited for our tour of Alexandria. The driver picked us up in a bus nice and early and we embarked on the nearly 4 hour drive from Cairo to Alexandria. Upon arrival, we met our guide, Marwa. On the tour we visited the Catacombs of Kom Al Shofaka, Pompey’s Pillar, the Ancient Roman Amphitheater, stopped for lunch at a Greek restaurant, and ended with the Library of Alexandria. We were supposed to, however, make an additional stop at the Fort Quaitbay. Our group was very excited for the stop at the Fort, we could see it from our restaurant and could not wait to visit. Over the entire day Marwa seemed extremely rushed and hurried us through the experiences. She spoke very quickly and barely told us any history, she took us to each spot long enough for a photo and was ready to leave. We did not explore the entire Catacombs, and were told everything closed at 3 pm. We found out afterwards, everything in fact did NOT close at 3 pm.
Once we left the restaurant and asked her about the Fort, she refused to take us and told us it was not included in the tour. We explained it was one of the top attractions on our tour and what we were most excited for. She argued and told us there was no reason to see it, we weren’t going and should just take a photo on the drive away (we were very far away). Deflated, we visited the museum and were pawned onto the museum’s tour guide. We booked a Private Day Tour To Alexandria from Cairo on 20 March for a 2 May trip - inclusive of a private car + guide + entry fees.
The one good thing about the tour was our lovely driver - who was great, played some awesome music and provided some peanuts and water for us.
Unfortunately, the rest of the day trip was awful.
We read on their website (see red font in the attached brochure, which they also emailed us upon booking) that we needed a 6am pickup as the Alexandria Library was limited to 200 tickets a day. As the website did not give us a 6am option - I write in to request for a 6am pick-up as we really wanted to visit and see the inside of the library. I'll explain why this was an annoying important part of the horrible tour.
I also did not opt for their set-lunch, as I am fussy about food and wanted to be dropped off at a specific restaurant with good reviews (see top right of my booking confirmation with my special request).
I reached out on 1 May to confirm if I could get a contact for a driver, as I've read some reviews here saying they were left stranded with no contact number. They emailed back to confirm that someone will contact me once they've reached.
And just hours later, I got an email reminder for a 7am - NOT 6am pick-up (see email thread). I emailed back and they responded to then re-confirm our 6am pick-up, asking for me to share my location as we were staying in an Airbnb.
So I did that, and got a text at 5:40am on the day of pick-up (see whatsapp - the timestamp is in Singapore time as I'm back home) to again ask for the location. I was getting annoyed, but would rather repeat my location again so there's no miscommunication.
Our lovely driver arrived at around 6:20am and we reached Alexandria slightly before 9am, with a coffee stop in between.
We were taken to the Catacombs first which left me confused as their brochure clearly said we needed to arrive at the Library by 9am for tickets - I texted the number to see if this was a mistake - and never got a response back. This speaks volumes of who they are as a company.
Eriny, our guide, arrived at around 9:05am. I asked if we needed to be at the Library first for tickets, she seemed confused and said don't worry - this is the usual itinerary. She seemed a bit flustered and didn't introduce herself or ask us our names.. but we left it and tried to enjoy the tour.
We did find Eriny very soft spoken and we put it down to shyness. She explained a little bit about everything which was alright (a bit different from the much more experienced guides we had from Osiris tours).
I also reminded her of the lunch location as I didn't trust Emo Tours in sharing details with their guides. She said don't worry - she'll help us later.
Things got weirder when we arrived at our second stop - the Pompey's Pillar. While walking inside the grounds, Eriny brought out some handmade magnets asking if we were keen on buying any - they were made by some friends at her university. We very politely said no, thank you. When leaving the Pompey's Pillar - she insisted we popped into the gift shops as the owners were her friends who were trustworthy. At first we didn't want to but relented - and we ended up buying many posters, papyrus, little souvenir's such as lighters and pyramids. We spent a good 30 minutes there, more than the time we stopped at both the catacombs and pillars.
Next was the Roman theatre - and she whipped out a brochure of cartouche necklaces (see photo) and asked if we were keen. Although a little annoyed as we had a long drive there and barely saw the sights - we were actually interested as we assumed a guide was trustworthy and we would have a safer experience buying things via her.
We placed our orders for $235 USD (1 silver cartouche at 40 USD, 3x mixed gold/silver cartouches at 65 USD each) as she said we could collect it at the end of the tour. This, to us, meant that at least she would still be with us and we would get it directly from her.
She asked for us to fully pay her in cash to get the order started - and of course we didn't carry that much cash with us. She found us an ATM near the Citadel - and it was spoilt, so she said we could continue our tour to the Citadel first since we were there.
About 45 minutes later - she took us to another ATM and while my husband was withdrawing cash, she mentioned that we can choose one of the lunch packages as part of the tour.
I said no - I clearly mentioned that I wanted lunch at a specific place and have been saying the same since I made the tour booking two months ago.
She tried selling lunch packages at two restaurants (one looked very old in the Google reviews, the other a bit more upscale but at this point - I've grown very weary and tired of her).
Since I insisted on my lunch venue - Eriny said we had to pay another 20 USD as they needed to pay the driver more to wait 1.5 hours for us.
First of all - why didn't anyone from EMO tour mention this in the beginning? I would gladly pay extra if you were more transparent.
Secondly, I mentioned again directly to Eriny that I wanted to go to a specific restaurant - and she didn't mention paying extra for the wait then.
I was so annoyed. We got into the van, and she asked for payment for the cartouches (note that it has been 1 hour since the first ATM).
As all trust was lost, I asked her to again CONFIRM when exactly we will receive the cartouches - she mentioned then that it was too late, so she'll place orders at their Cairo branch and that the driver will help us pick-it up for us.
We said no, you promised us at the end of the tour - can you at leave drive us to the shop so we can guarantee the purchase. We were not getting a receipt and have no proof of purchase once she takes our cash. The contact from EMO tours also still has not responded to my text about the library tickets.
So we decided to say no then to the cartouches even though we still had the Library and lunch to still visit which would've given us at least 2 hours (see my note below on where we got our cartouches made within the hour).
In the end - we paid 15 USD for the driver to wait so we won't be held hostage to their set-lunch. Yes we spent more for lunch but I like to know what I'm eating and would rather pay more for quality.
Eriny's behavior went from friendly to glum when we brought us to the library - shared 3 facts in 3 minutes and asked us if we had any questions twice, before leaving us to explore it on our own for 15 minutes. Note that the 6am start-time/200 ticket limit was only applicable during COVID. And not once - through emails, whatsapps and our first chat with Eriny when she met us - was this explained. If we knew, we would've just had a 7am start.
She then dropped us off at the lunch venue I choose and left us there, the driver waited for our pick-up back.
So all in all we only had 2 hours of total tour time, 6 hours of driving and 1.5 hours of shopping/arguing.
Eriny was more interested in selling us things than actually sharing more about the sights we visited.
It was the absolute worst experience with Eriny and EMO tours. We honestly booked a private tour thinking we would get a decent guide who wasn't only going to focus on selling to us. 100% would never recommend this tour company.
PS: Khan el-Khalili bazaar has a shop that created 4x beautiful cartouches (3x in silver and 1x 18k gold plated) for just 2,600 EGP or 84 USD. And they got it done within AN HOUR. SO please do not purchase these from Eriny, go down and see it for yourself and collect it soon.

Pickup at Cairo was 2+ hours late with no real explanation given. When pickup was finally made the car reeked of cigarette smoke and it appeared the driver had been a last minute hire. Additionally a second person was in the car, (besides the driver) and when I contacted Emo Tours as to why, no explanation was provided. Ride was fine and we arrived at our destination safely. I will say that we used Emo Tours for transportation in other Egyptian cities while we were here and all were excellent. Not sure why this particular trip wasn’t also.

My private transfer to Alexandria was great and smooth. The driver I think his name was Ahmed (I went on Jan 3rd from Great Pyramid Inn)- I want that I express the good job he did. He was very polite.

Excellent trip of Alexandria I’m with Ola. She made the trip worthwhile even though it rained a bit! It was an excellent explanation of the area and history and she anticipated our needs before us! She Made sure we were fully hydrated and attended to! Thank you for the great time in the city!
