In the interest of fairness, I'll preface this review by saying that I'm sure a lot of people will love the Zahra, and my perception during the trip was also that the other guests were thrilled with it and would rate it 5 stars. BUT - this really caters to a specific taste and demographic, and I very quickly realised when I got on board that I'd made the wrong choice. So my main gripes:
1. I really found the ship absolutely charmless and sterile. Again, I'm sure some people will like it, but to me boarding the boat felt like showing up at an airport terminal, albeit a well-maintained one. Yes, everything is clean and in good order, but there is ZERO vibe (at least for me), which is especially jarring in a country like Egypt which is so filled with ambiance and charming places everywhere you look. The best perk about the boat is the heated swimming pool on deck, but that too has an annoying deficiency, in that one end of it is so incredibly shallow, that it's virtually impossible to swim laps. Which brings me onto my next point:
2. The cruise is really designed for a much older and less active clientele. So the pool was actually empty most of the time I used it, which was nice of course, but made it even more of a shame I couldn't swim lengths in it. The itinerary also misses out on some things that I would really like to have done - for example stop at one of the beautiful scenic spots along the way to go for a swim in the Nile itself (which I know some other cruises do). But the Oberoi doesn't offer that, probably because it knows it wouldn't have much uptake from the older clientele it attracts. In fact, other than 2 young girls who appeared to be there with their parents, I would guess that virtually all the guests were 60+. So if you're a younger traveller, don't expect to connect with anyone in your age group. You'll also be missing out on some absolute highlights on the itinerary - for example the tomb of Seti I in the Valley of the Kings (which I would've completely missed had a friend not told me to check it out), and an amazing vantage point over Aswan which requires a 20-minute or so climb.
3. The boat is completely stationary for basically 2 of the 5 days (1 in Luxor at the start, and another in Aswan at the end). Given the fact that I really found the boat much less nice than pretty much any half decent hotel (for example Al Moudira or even Winter Palace in Luxor, or the Old Cataract in Aswan), I'd frankly much rather have just explored Luxor and Aswan from a hotel on my own, and enjoyed the cruise portion on a slower boat with better ambiance even if the journey itself took a little longer. I don't understand the point of a cruise where you are not moving at all for a huge portion of the time - it feels like it's just an excuse to extract more money since it's obviously extremely expensive per night ($1,590 if I remember correctly, which is far more expensive than a night at a hotel)
4. The food was deeply average, again a great shame since you're having so many meals on the boat.
5. The sound-proofing on the boat is basically non-existent, you hear absolutely everything going on outside your cabin (and out in the harbour / adjacent ships) and the worst part is, that includes the unbearable schmaltzy hotel lobby type music that they have on loop on their speaker system, which is torturously played until something like 11pm (which is also insanely late when your first day itinerary starts from 5am in the morning, and sets a routine for trying to get early nights). And this is in spite of the fact that my only request when filling out my preferences before the cruise was for a quiet room.
6. The internet is totally unreliable - at times good enough to stream Netflix (just about), at others it literally doesn't work at all. Not really forgivable given the price point.
That's not to say it's all bad of course. The staff are definitely well-meaning and try very hard, although for my taste are on the side of over-attentive - I'm just not the type that likes to be asked very few minutes whether I'm enjoying everything, but again, maybe to some that's good service, it's just not for me. Our guide was overall good, seemingly knowledgeable about the history and talking with infectious enthusiasm, my one complaint about him though was he was being just a bit too much of a lubricant for tipping, announcing more than once that it was the last opportunity to tip and even ferrying us to an ATM for the purpose.
All of that being said - the journey down the Nile is an extremely special one that I'd recommend to any traveller. Next time though, I think I'll check out one of the Nour el Nil dahabiyas or maybe the SS Sudan, which I happened to pass by moored in one of the docks and looked like it had a much more atmospheric ambiance. It's worth also considering whether it's better to take the opposite route (from Aswan to Luxor), which goes with the current of the Nile, if taking one of the slower boats.

It was a dream come true for us to cruise on Oberoi Zahra. We cruised from Aswan to Luxor in late December 2024. As mentioned by other travelers, Oberoi excels in all aspects- Itinerary, knowledgeable guides, food, service and rooms. With only 27 cabins on board, you absolutely get the best attention. We stayed in a family suite, which was spacious and extremely comfortable.
Our guide Mohammad (Egyptologist) accompanied us at all the attractions and provided best knowledge and explanation. On board, we received excellent and warm service from all crew members, especially Deepak (house keeping and services manager).
I highly recommend Zahra for anyone who is looking for a luxurious river cruise and history experience on the Nile.
