I really recommend this tour. Our guide Garth was very knowledgeable of Chinese food, culture, history. You can tell there is a lot of work and passion behind selecting every stop and dish during the tour. I wish I had unlimited storage as everything we tasted was incredible!

Dear Pasquale - Thank you for your recommendation! We too wish our guests could have unlimited storage so we could share every single fantastic local dish available at breakfast time. Instead, we need to carefully curate them all to make sure every dish we share is worth the room it takes up. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed them all!

I really enjoyed the Breakfast food tour and Garth was a wonderful tour guide! If you are interested in trying new dishes at off-the-beaten-path places you will love this tour. We tried 10+ different foods, both sweet and savory, and toured all over the Hutong. Garth took me to tons of places to try foods I never would have tried in my own. He shared interesting history about both Beijing and the food we ate and had tons of great information about the area. Really a can’t miss tour whether you’ve just come to Beijing or have been here before! And you definitely won’t leave hungry!

Our guide - Garth - showed us places only a long-time resident like him could know: Small restaurants and snack shops serving the most delicious, typical and varied food (and plenty of it, too). Most of the dishes were prepared on order within minutes right in front of us. The pace of the tour was well-planned, no wait-time and no haste either. Stops were a well-balanced mix of street food and sit-down restaurants.
In addition to enjoying a great culinary experience we gained insight into Chinese history, society, economy, culture; Garth has deep expertise on these matters and shared it in a considered, articulate manner.
Fyi, we also booked the Old Hutong Dinner Tour one day later with Garth and posted a review on TripAdvisor, and two more tours in Shanghai with the same company Untour Foods.
In addition to enjoying a great culinary experience we gained insight into Chinese history, society, economy, culture; Garth has deep expertise on these matters and shared it in a considered, articulate manner.

Dear Greet - Thanks for taking the time to recommend the Hutong Breakfast Tour. That mochi is sooo delicious! The lady who makes it, Madam Xiong, gets up at 5am every morning to start preparing the ingredients and we’re usually lucky enough to be her first customers of the day. Her house is one of the only places in Beijing you can find home-made mochi and the only place we know where it’s still hot when it’s served. We’re so glad you enjoyed it enough to go back for a second one!
We’re happy to hear you thought the tour was amazing and hope you’ll join us again for another amazing experience on the Old Beijing Dinner Tour next time you’re in Beijing.

Having loved UnTour's dinner tour in Shanghai, we were keen to try this hutong breakfast tour on the next leg of our trip in Beijing - it didn't disappoint! Garth was warm, friendly and informative - he adapted the tour to our pacing and encouraged us to spend lots of time chatting and enjoying the food at each place. The tour provided a great overview of the history of the hutongs, and we left stuffed with amazing food (and knowledge)! The tour was a really enjoyable way to familiarise ourselves with lots of different foods in local, authentic spots which we would never have found by ourselves and we could then recognise some favourite foods during the rest of our trip. Garth was always keen to answer our many, many questions about food and life in Beijing. We were due to visit the Forbidden City after the tour and Garth made sure we knew where we were going and were generally well prepared for the rest of our day/remaining time in Beijing. Thank you so much Garth - we couldn't recommend the tour enough!

The hutongs are a fantastic place to spend a morning, wandering, chatting and, of course, eating. One of our aims is to familiarize visitors with the local food scene so they feel confident exploring independently, so its great to hear Garth made you feel well prepared for the rest of your time in Beijing and that you continued to recognize your favorite foods throughout your trip. My colleague did an Untour Food Tour in Shanghai and loved it so much that she convinced me to book the breakfast and dinner Hutong tour in the same day! The tours were both amazing and we left so happy and stuffed. Our guide was Garth who spoke perfect english and who was so knowledgeable about Beijing’s history as well as the history behind each food. You’ll go to places you wouldn’t go on your own and will get to try so many authentic dishes (I’m determined to find some of them in California). Aside from being so knowledgeable he was so organized and helpful. He pointed out all the “nice” bathrooms and even brought toilet paper for the women just in case! 10/10 recommend this tour you will not regret it!

The combination of great food and in depth knowledge about its history and the local culture in general made the breakfast tour great! the food was delicious, the places were authentic and non touristy, serving local customer. even with some Chinese knowledge it would have been difficult to find alone while going around the area. If you like delicious food with a side of history and context then this is the thing for you. Pace yourself on the eating because you'll get to try a *lot* of different breakfast foods. Most of these stops are hard for the casual tourist to independently find since they include pop-ups and convenience store windows, but everything was a treat - even the douzhi. I have only good things to say about my two tours with Garth. Both the dinner and breakfast tours that we took with him were delightful and delicious.

Garth is the perfect host. His choice of breakfasts and their locations were spot-on. Lovely tasty food from dumplings in local restaurants to street food kiosks. I got real insights into the food and also the local neighbourhood. All complemented by his expert insights into the food preparation and history. Unforgettable experience and I highly recommend it,
