A day trip to Machu Picchu from Cusco is an unforgettable but intense experience, requiring careful planning to make the most of your visit. The journey typically starts early in the morning, with a train ride from either Poroy or Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus from Aguas Calientes to the ruins. The stunning views along the way, from the Sacred Valley to the lush cloud forests, set the stage for the awe-inspiring moment when you finally arrive at Machu Picchu.
While a day trip allows you to witness this world wonder, the limited time can feel rushed. You’ll have only a few hours to explore the site before heading back. Guided tours provide valuable historical insights, but those wanting to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain should plan accordingly, as time constraints may make these hikes challenging.
On the downside, the trip can be physically demanding due to early departures, long transportation times, and high-altitude conditions. Weather can also be unpredictable, so dressing in layers and bringing rain protection is essential. Additionally, train and entrance tickets should be booked well in advance due to high demand.
Overall, a day trip is perfect for those short on time but eager to experience Machu Picchu’s magic. However, for a more immersive experience, staying overnight in Aguas Calientes allows for a more relaxed visit, possibly catching sunrise over the ruins.

The Machu Picchu tour is an unforgettable experience that immerses you in the awe-inspiring beauty of one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites. The journey begins with a scenic train ride through the stunning Sacred Valley, offering breathtaking views of the Andean mountains. Upon arrival, the site itself is even more spectacular than imagined, with its intricate stone structures, terraced hills, and panoramic vistas. Knowledgeable guides bring the history to life, explaining the fascinating Incan culture and the mystery behind the site's construction. The hike up to the Sun Gate or Huayna Picchu offers spectacular views. The tour combines adventure, history, and natural beauty, making it a must-see for any traveler. Highly recommended to Happy Gringo Tours!

Our dream came true ;)
A day trip to Machu Picchu is a captivating experience that combines breathtaking natural beauty with rich historical significance. As one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, it offers a deep dive into the ancient Inca civilization, surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes. The trip typically begins with a scenic train ride from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the site. The journey itself is a highlight, offering panoramic views of the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River.
Once in Aguas Calientes, visitors take a bus up to the entrance of Machu Picchu, where the magic truly begins. Stepping into this ancient citadel, visitors are immediately struck by its impressive architecture, precisely constructed stone structures, and the striking backdrop of mist-covered mountains. The site is meticulously preserved, allowing for an immersive experience that transports you back in time.
The tour of Machu Picchu is often led by a knowledgeable guide, who provides insight into the site’s history, purpose, and the engineering marvels of the Inca people. Highlights include the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (a ritual stone), and the Inca Bridge. The iconic views from the main plaza, with the surrounding peaks looming in the distance, are unforgettable.
Despite the crowds, the site retains an aura of mystery and wonder. Visitors can explore the various terraces, sacred spaces, and steep stairways, and if time permits, hike up to the Sun Gate or Huayna Picchu for even more expansive views.
The trip is relatively short, leaving little time for lingering, but it’s enough to get a sense of the site’s grandeur. Afterward, travelers return to Aguas Calientes for a quick meal before heading back to Cusco. For many, the experience is both a physical and emotional journey, with Machu Picchu's timeless beauty leaving a lasting impression. Overall, a day trip to Machu Picchu is a must-do for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Thanks to Happy Gringo Tours and oír guide George!

I recently took a day trip to Machu Picchu from Cusco, and it was honestly one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve ever had. If you’re debating whether or not to do this whirlwind adventure, I’m here to share what you can expect.
The journey begins early, with a 4:00 AM pick-up from Cusco. It’s a bit of a hustle to get out of bed, but it's absolutely necessary if you want to make the most of the day. We were driven to Ollantaytambo, a town about 1.5 hours away, where we caught the train to Aguas Calientes, the town closest to Machu Picchu. The train ride is spectacular. We traveled along the Urubamba River, winding through steep valleys and seeing the incredible Andean landscapes. The train itself is comfortable, with large windows that let you take in the scenery.
Once we arrived in Aguas Calientes, we were quickly ushered onto a bus that takes you up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The road is narrow and winding, and the bus ride takes about 30 minutes, but the views are stunning the whole way. As we climbed higher, I could feel the excitement building—this was the moment!
Arriving at Machu Picchu is surreal. You’ve probably seen a million pictures of the site, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. The view is absolutely jaw-dropping. The mountains surrounding the ancient city are huge and lush, and the ruins themselves are as impressive as you’ve heard. We had a guide, which I highly recommend because they provide so much historical context and details you wouldn't otherwise know. The guide took us through the main sections, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone (which is believed to have been a sun dial), and the Sacred Plaza. It was fascinating to learn how the Inca people built this marvel without modern tools.
We spent around 2.5 hours on the guided tour, which was enough time to explore the main highlights. Afterward, there’s some free time to wander around, take photos, or simply soak in the energy of the place. I would’ve loved to stay longer, but the time constraints of a day trip made it a bit rushed. However, I didn’t feel completely rushed—there was a good balance between exploring the ruins and keeping the trip on schedule.
After our time at Machu Picchu, we descended back to Aguas Calientes for lunch and a quick stroll through the town. There’s a market there where you can buy souvenirs, and it’s a nice place to relax before heading back. Then, we took the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a long drive back to Cusco, arriving around 8:00 PM.
This day trip is a long, full day, but it’s totally worth it. I was absolutely exhausted by the end, but I don’t regret a single minute. For anyone short on time but still wanting to experience Machu Picchu, this is the way to go. It’s an intense day, but you’re treated to some of the most amazing views and history you’ll ever experience. If you have the stamina and love adventure, I highly recommend Happy Gringo Tours for this tour!

Dishonest, unreliable, and unprofessional = unhappy gringo & nightmare experience.
I booked a ltrip to Peru for my birthday and reached out to Happy Gringo and was excited when they told me that had an for an overnight trip that sounded great..I confirmed and sent all my information that was requested and assumed I was in good hands.
After several days of not hearing back..I contacted multiple times to then was told they had a new cancellation for the morning of my birthday. While this was a change from the 2-day I accepted, I was still happy to get to be on the mountain for the morning of my birthday. They then sent the payment link (which I completed immediately).
I assumed everything was fine, but then several days went by without communication. I checked in the night before the trip to ensure things were still going according to plan & then when I called George he then told me that I was now scheduled with a new group he created that would be going on a different route and much later time than the original group I reserved and paid for (missing the famous smoky photo opportunity etc.). After asking George to send me copies of the Machu, bus, and train tickets, it was clear George had lied to me the whole time. ..all these tickets were just made after contacting him on the night before of the trip. He said no more morning tickets were available…but this was lie I confirmed with the Machu tourist office.
I was able to buy the tickets myself in town for the route and time I wanted. I told George and the tour guide I was taking this earlier time slot, but will still use the return transfer etc. since I had already paid for and had the tickets. This is where they failed again here in neglecting to get me a transfer from the train to my hotel which I paid for and confirmed with the tour guide. I was not happy due the continued incompetence, but was able to find a taxi and did not want to deal with George’s lies anymore on my birthday anymore.
I tried to make things right the next day in asking for a refund on the things I did not use and refund for the price of my taxi I had to double pay for since he didn’t book my return. George then started to gaslight me and push me onto the manager “Mary” to handle these details of a dispute. This was another lie just to distract and delay ..as I later found out George was the owner and I believe these other people are indeed him. After this dialogue not going anywhere (also attempting to go to the Happy gringo office twice where nobody was working), I I ended up filing a report at the tourist police office to get my fair request for refund (advised by my hotel).
While it was not something I wanted to spend my vacation time on, I wanted to try and get my experience on record to prevent others from experiencing what I went through. The police informed me that there had been other reports under George’s name from previous disputes.
In trying to reach a fair agreement, it was clear George was incapable of admitting any wrong doing or to being dishonest despite the clear evidence shown in our text and email exchange.
Lucky I had this clear evidence showing George / Happy Gringo not booking the trip I paid for and failing to book my transfer..along with the time stamped tickets showing he waited until the night before to book anything. I was able to use this to submit a formal complaint to the police & also send to my credit card company and received a refund.
My experience leaves me to believe Happy Gringo Tours is unreliable, dishonest, and unprofessional and I cannot recommend anyone booking with him. Also the inability to admit they mess up leads to very poor customer service.
I recommend booking through a guide based I. Aguas Calientes to get the best experience because as George told be after, “Aguas is a mafia that controls Machu.” Why not book for the local experts in Aguas that have the right access to get th best trip?
I gave George every opportunity to make this right and to be fair and honest (with clear evidence), but he chose to be greedy and waste my time.
This company was very dishonest, unreliable, disorganized, and unprofessional. Do not trust your precious time in Peru with this group.

How can I add the 360 train ride to this tour?
Skrevet 5. mai 2024
What train does Happy GringoTours use for the ride from Ollantaytambo train station to Aguas Calientes? Is it the Vitadome train with panoramic views while you travel up the mountain? Thanks!

To confirm a reservation, why do I need to enter my passport information? And what if I don't know/access to a travelers info when I book?

Are there any current restrictions with the civil unrest in Peru? An article I read that travelers were stuck in the park for a time...
Skrevet 27. desember 2022
It was safe during the time I went in August 2022, there were no restrictions at all. Sorry, this is a late reply, just seeing this now (June 2023).

I’m not aware about the Circuits but it only takes you to see the Ruins, walk through it and then return. No actual hiking mountains or Inka trail hiking for days.

Good afternoon,
I would like to know if this tour offers the Vitadome train.
Thanks
