Guatape was a fun adventure! The tour was a full day that included lunch and plenty of alone time. The rock, in my opinion, was a difficult climb but the views were worth it. Sergio was a great tour guide who was friendly and spoke English and Spanish. Gloria was assisting the tour and she was friendly, nice, and willing to answer any questions. The tour was overall a good time, however, it was a whole day affair— so be prepared. Take a sun hat and sunscreen because the sun is blazing.

What a fantastic experience.
Elizabeth, Sammy, & drive Javier were just PERFECT!
Javier provided safe & professional transportation from Medellín and back. He obeyed all speed limits and posted traffic signs. Excellent!
Elizabeth, our Spanish speaking guide was so lovely! So friendly, engaging and excited about her job. A real gem of a person! Elizabeth, if you read this- you are the best! We love you ❤️
Sammy, our English speaking guide was just incredible! My brother from another mother! Sammy's English is PERFECT! He is so fun, friendly, energetic and knowledgeable about Colombia, Medellín & Guatapé. He really made this experience special.

The drive out to El Peñol is very scenic. It takes you up into the mountains and through winding country roads. You will stop for breakfast at a local restaurant, excellent food!
El Peñol, the rock of Guatapé is impressive! It's NOT EASY to climb to the top, but if you pace yourself and go slowly you will do it! Just keep hydrated and be sure you are well rested. The views are excellent from the top.
After the rock, you will be taken to the village of Guatapé for lunch. It is great and included in the price if the tour. If your still hungry, feel free to order something extra at your own additional expense.
The cruise on the lake / recevoir of Guatapé is a nice way to relax after lunch and enjoy some fresh air and scenic views.
Finally, the walking tour portion of Guatapé is lovely. It will be split into Spanish & English groups. The village is small, so distances to walk are very manageable even for older folks.
You will have some free time to wander the village as well.
The value of this tour is unbeatable. Do not hesitate to book it, you will love it and have a great time.
Just be aware that there is some road construction on the highway to and from Guatapé so be adequately prepared for long day.
My tour left Parque El Poblado at 7am, and arrived back at 7:30pm.

We had a tour with Sandy, Elizabeth, and Luis. Everything was planned out with precision and we had a great mix of organized activities and time to explore on our own. Sandy was an excellent guide that provided the group with plenty of interesting information. The views from the rock were breathtaking and Guatapé was something out of a fairy tale. I would highly recommend this trip for English speakers in the area!

This full day tour goes from Medellin to El Penol rock and onto the colourful town of Guatape nearby. The drive from Medellin takes 2 hours.
At the rock, you have about 90 minutes to climb it (ticket of 20000COP, about $US5, not included). You don’t need all this time for the 700 steps and when you’re back on the ground, you have time to wander the myriad souvenir shops and restaurants. I had some caramelised coconut from a stall and it was really nice.
After that, the bus takes us to town for lunch (which is included), a 40-minute boat ride on the lake, then a walking tour of the town and some free time to explore. Then the long drive back to Medellin.
That’s the itinerary. Now for the commentary.
Travel is in a 50-seater bus with pickups at 3 different locations in the city. I was the last on the bus. Now with a mini-bus, seating isn’t really that important, though it’s always better to be near the front. With a bigger bus, seating is more important. Why should the last group on the bus be condemned to the same awful seat the entire day, especially when you are on the road for 4 hours?
I had noticed on this trip that some people are just too selfish. On Inca Rail and now here, people taking a window seat on a tourist bus just to go to sleep. There were 2 people who started at a window, then used the aisle seat to lie down. I was there to see the countryside of Columbia. So when the guide says “out the right you can see…..”, didn’t help as I couldn’t see a thing stuck in the aisle near the back of the bus.
Being an old whinger, when we stopped for a toilet break after an hour, I asked whether the seating was now free once everyone had got off the bus. He said no but would see what he could do. I did end up with a window seat after that when a kindly Chinese man let me have a window nearer to the front. But seriously, if you don’t want to see the sights, then don’t hog the window.
Our guides Alejandro and Sandy (“with a y”) were a bit over the top but their hearts were in the right place and they knew their stuff.
The bus was past its expiry date. It wasn’t comfortable and really struggled up any incline.
The lunch options were good and they were pre-ordered on the bus so they would be ready by the time we got there. I had the traditional Bandeja Paisa with beans, egg, plantain, mince, pork sausage, pork belly, rice and salad. Quite filling.
The boat ride is probably unnecessary. It goes out onto the lake, turns around and comes back, with very little to see. It’s an extra to distinguish them from other tours but it’s not very enlightening.
The walking tour was informative and the free time was used for snacks and drinks from the myriad shops all around the town. The houses are very colourful and make for good photos. The locals probably don’t enjoy strangers photographing their homes but as tourism is the lifeblood of the town, they have to put up with it.
The other problem with larger groups is the people who don’t get deadlines. When the guides say 3.50, what is so hard about that? Well it proved beyond some who kept the rest of us waiting for 15 minutes. Get with the program people.
Finally back on the bus and the long drive back to Medellin.
Recommendations? I’m sure Tour Guatape is the equal or better than similar operators. The price ($US35) is very good considering lunch is part of the deal. If you’re worried about how much you’re spending and decide to go with a larger group tour like this, I say that Tour Guatape is a good option. If you can spend a bit more for a smaller group, you may enjoy the Guatape experience more.

Thank you, Olga (and your young colleague who was our guide), for this nice experience. Everything went flawlessly from the booking until our return. We were glad to have chosen this activity. We agree with the good rating. Booking confirmation (booked via Tripadvisor) was super fast and included all details, the departure was on time, tickets to climb the 600+ stairs were provided to us (we only had to cue to climb up the rock), the food in the restaurant was simple but tasty, the little city is beautiful, really worth visiting. Definitely recommended to other travelers.

Had a fantastic day trip out to Guatapé. Our tour guide Sandy was full of knowledge and was full of enthusiasm. This made the tour that much more enjoyable and worthwhile. Would recommend this tour to anyone!

Sandy and Alejandro are a friendly, knowledgeable, punctual dynamic duo. They combine the perfect skills and charisma to form the best tour experience. The fact that Sandy learned English from hip hop is as awesome as it is impressive. Alejandro had everything organized down to the second. I highly recommend this tour, it's perfect in activities and duration; a perfect day trip getaway from the hustle and bustle of Medellin.
