It was really "grand crossing" of Baikal. Two Thumbs up!
feb. 2020
There are many tour programs about winter of Baikal. But crossing the frozen baikal lake by my feet and staying in ice camp was really unique experience! It was the best tour ever I did. Office staff had replied for my request and question very kindly and promptly even though midnight (You have to sleep in night!) And Guide was very helpful and kind. He always respond rapidly and appropriately for our request. Also he has plentyful knowledge about Tour spot and Russia. (Especially he didn't sleep well for heating of tent in ice camp. Thanks for his effort!) There are so many great places to go in Russia, and I would like to choose Baikal Nature again in my next visit of Russia!

Circuit Royaume des glaces de BaikalNature
feb. 2020

breathtaking nature with professional guides
mar. 2020
the trip was much more fantastic than I ever imagined. The Baikal, Siberia, the snow, the ice, the welcoming by the Russian people made the trip one of the best travel experiences I ever had.
I am 60 years old and feared I would physically not be fit enough to do the crossing, but being sporty and having trained a bit (jogging, hiking, swimming), I was very well prepared.
Tips: I put my backpack in a suitcase and left the suitcase with stuff I needed for the flight (and one more day in Irkutsk) in the hotel.
Food: The Food in the hotels and home stay is excellent. But take protein bars of similar stuff to eat in between, especially during the hiking across the lake/ice
Clothes: we did the tour beginning of March. The climate at the lake is colder than in Irkutsk. During the crossing we were fine with Skiing-Underwear, Fleeze, Ski-Jacket (as the hiking is like marching, very energetic, so warming up). I did wear thick tights, skiing underwear and skiing-trousers (against the feezing wind), thick socks and thick snow boots. Definitely take thin gloves to wear inside thick ski-mittens/gloves. This is a must ! The wind on the lake can be freezing and it takes only seconds and the hands/fingers get painfully cold. Take a ski-balaclava for windy weather. Take sunglasses (important !) or even ski-goggles.
The spikes you get for the boots to walk on the ice are not heavy and excellent and rubber/elastic, so easy to put on any size of boot.

The whole trip is fantastic, but only something for adventurous, sportiv people. You need to like work out, hiking, travelling with basic choice of food and accommodation. But you are in good hands of excellent guides, very professional, with a lot of experience how to deal with difficult situations and very different people and weather .

Our Guide Andrew did check our equipment in the hotel in Irkutsk. It is a good moment to ask questions about equipment.
We did the crossing the "other way around", we took the train from Irkutsk to Ulan Ude (overnight - about 8 hours), normal sleeper, clean, take ear-plugs as some in your travel group might snore. (also good advice for later in the tent !).
We stayed with a Russian Family home stay in Ust Barguzin (great Russain Banya, which is some sort of very hot Hammam, wonderful) and got a fantastic dinner (fish in all sorts of ways).
Next morning we were driven on the lake/ice some kilometers onto the lake as it otherwise would have been a very long hike. We were first disappointed that the lake was completely covered in snow this year (global warming: more snow). But the view was also breathtaking. We hiked about 17 km in brillant sunshine. Stunning. Pulling our sledges with our backpacks (they are not very heavy as they glide smoothly over the snow/ice). We walked a good 5 hours. In bad weather that can easily be longer.
The camp is great, though of course basic. The tents have to be heated with ovens and briquettes. That means of course that somebody has to get up during the night and put in new briquettes (in our case that was either us or sometimes the guides). As I said: the whole thing is an adventure.
The day on ice we had very cold, windy weather, no sunshine, freezing temperatures. Ice-Skating was difficult as some ice was cleared for hockey, but the ice was to uneven to be good for skating. In the afternoon we enjoyed the Banya. Take slippers as they are necessary to walk on the ice!
Otherwise we were provided with lots of Baikal Vodka. Remember to drink enough water with it. I underestimated how dehydrated I was after the hike and had too much.
Another tipp: As it is cold it is very difficult to distinguish between being cold and being wet. We experience being wet as being cold. But when we are cold anyway we might not realise that we are actually wet (probably have wet feet) and that is a problem as we then do not get warm again. So be very, very careful to stay warm and be alert, whether you have cold or even wet feet.

I was very grateful that our guides were very good in anticipating how far we actually could walk and when we would have enough. I think it is very easy to overestimate what we can do, but once the cold and exhaustion kick in it is too late.

The last day we continued our trip, this time again very cold, grey and a bit windy, but still beautiful, a completely different experience of Siberia.
The Ice caves on the island of Olkhon Island are absolutely stunning and way more impressive than any photo can show. It is breathtaking what our nature can do with ice. Tipp: kneel down on the ground and try to look underneath the "skirting" of the ice near the rocks. There are breathtaking fragile ice cristals forming away from any wind and in very deep temperature and not visible from outside.
Some people might take macro photography.

Grand Baikal Crossing Trek
mar. 2019
Grand Baikal Crossing Trek from 8-13 March 2019. The trek involved a 3 days with 2 nights camping at the Baikal ice camp middle which also the deepest spot of the lake Baikal. The trek is expedition style which is very interesting. The ice camp is exceptionally run and very comfortable even though we experience some -10 C windy condition. The trekking distance is about 65 Km as we crossed the lake (actual width is 81 Km.). The trans siberian train from Ulan Ude back to Irkutsk finished the trip off nicely. I will be back again.

A Very Pleasant Tour of Lake Baikal
jul. 2019
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Lake Baikal which was organised by the travel company Baikal Nature. We were very impressed with the friendly, professional and competent services of Baikal Nature. Our guide and driver were friendly, knowledgeable and great company.

We spent most of our time on beautiful Olkhon Island with a one night stay at the interesting, historic lakeside village of Bolshoye Goloustnoye. The last evening we spent in the city of Irkutsk where we re-connected the following day with our train journey to Harbin, China.

Lake Baikal and Olkhon Island were truly beautiful. The scenery was quite breathtaking and the walks were excellent. Irkutsk was an interesting and lovely city.

The accommodation at the Lake was somewhat disappointing but we acknowledge that there is only very basic accommodation available, and what we had at the Hotel Baikal View was probably the best on Olkhon Island. Similarly, the U Mikhalycha Guest House at Bolshoye Goloustnoye was basic but clean and comfortable. The Sayen Hotel at Irkutsk however was truly excellent.

It is of some concern about what future tourism holds for Lake Baikal and surrounds. The area is ecologically sensitive and the mass influx of tourism we were seeing during our visit was disturbing. Careful consideration and sensitive government planning is required to allow sensible tourism, whilst preserving the integrity of the environment.

Overall, our tour of Lake Baikal was excellent.

Grand Crossing of Baikal Lake 2019
mar. 2019 • Alene
After reading many reveiws, I did not expected much, but the tour delivered the most fun I have had since retirement. The setting was perfect for sub-zero expedition style touring of Baikal frozen lake. Four of us from various countries enjoy this tour very much. From Irkutsk to Olkhon then trekked to the Ice camp and then to Uts Barguzin. This expedition style tour may not be from every one but we have had a great time.
