The tour and our guide CJ were great. Kyoto is a beautiful city and the walking tour as we made our way from restaurant to restaurant was (almost) as enjoyable as the food was interesting and tasty. The tour started at the Nishiki Market and ended at Pontocho Alley (which has to be one of the quintessential Kyoto foodie streets). We were certainly introduced to food we would never have tried on our own such as Ayu ( a whole sweet tiny fish). Her suggestions for other local restaurants were spot on. Thanks CJ !!

Fabulous tour of the Nishiki market with CJ, beginning with onomiyaki (savory pancakes) and continuing through perfectly paced (and portioned) samples… with wonderful commentary and explanations. We did this our first day in Kyoto and feel so much better able to figure out what to try now…. CJ is a great guide!

We had a great time on this tour. We got to try a number of dishes that we new to us as well as experiencing new takes on foods that we knew. In the end we felt that we learned a lot about Kyoto's food culture and history while enjoying tasty foods and drinks (especially sake which I wasn't a big fan of before and now I want to try more) of all sorts. 100% recommend folks to dedicate an evening to a tour. You won't regret it!

My friend and I did this on our last day in Kyoto. We had an amazing time trying different foods and talking with our guide Moe, who is absolutely the best. This is definitely a must do while in Kyoto.

What a great way to learn about the people of Kyoto! First a sparkling sake taste and off to the local market which runs for several blocks for a soy donut (tastes better than it sounds) and some tempura eel - also tasty. First restaurant for an Obanzai meal and Yuta, our guide explained everything in great detail. Plum wine is delicious and just watch the bonito flakes 😳 while you learn of the traditional cooking of the locals. We then enjoyed 2 more restaurants to experience Yakinuki (great experience) and a real tempura meal. It was all so much fun and filling you will certainly enjoy this tour.

My partner & I recently joined the Kyoto Night Food tour, with Yuta as our guide. We started by walking through Nishiki markets and sampled soy donuts (which were delicious) and also some fried conger eel (also tasty). We then stopped at a small bar to try a range of small home-style dishes and plum wine. After that, we went to a standing izakaya and tried another 4 or dishes, plus sake & beer. Lastly, we stopped at a tempura restaurant for even more food and sake. We were stuffed full by the end and couldn't even finish our tempura. Do not worry about there being not enough food! We also walked through Pontocho alley where the Geisha & Mako stay. Yuta was very knowledgeable & spoke very good English. I'd highly recommend this tour as it was a great insight into a more traditional side of Kyoto and the food is amazing.

My wife and I had a great time on our tour. Our guide Moe did a great job. I was very impressed by the amount of food and drinks included in the tour and by the end of the tour I couldn't eat another bite. We were also introduced to some adventurous foods that I would not have tried otherwise. This was a great way to start our trip to Japan and I highly recommend it!

I used Ninja Food Tours to explore the local food scene & cuisine in Osaka, Kyoto, & Tokyo. They helped make eating out in Japan and discovering the local cuisine far more enjoyable and interesting than I would have been able to do on my own. As a solo traveller, joining a tour is often the best way to see different restaurants and meet new people. In Japan, where it can be hard to decide what to eat first (or even how to order it), a food tour is the right way to go.
In Osaka, Yuta was the tour guide for the evening, and the group had a blast trying all of the different street food and the various bars. The popsicle drink was a winner. Everyone loved the takoyaki & pork buns. The tour ended with dessert (that the whole group was too full to finish) & a few photos with the famous “running man” billboard.
In Kyoto, our tour group had Moe as a guide. She started things off right when she cracked a bottle of sake street-side - it was a great way to kick off a fun evening of cocktails and snacks. Moe was sure to challenge us with lots of weird snacks & fun eats (fish fin, fish liver, eel, etc.) that kept the whole group entertained.
In Tokyo, Giulia was the guide for the “Best of Izakaya” tour. Again, the food was excellent, and we went to so many cool places that I would never have thought to stop at on my own. From skewers, to sushi, to gyoza, everything was delicious. (Giulia was a fantastic guide, however, this tour was slightly less lively & fun, as the group was just comprised of me + a couple. If I had known that in advance, I may have reconsidered. I’d suggest that the company consider including a “head count” of how many people you’ll be joining when booking through their website, like the AirBnB experiences bookings do).
Ninja Food Tours was also the only tour company I found that would accommodate same-day/short-notice booking. Given that it was off-season (February), and I was travelling solo, I tried to take everything one day at a time, planning the day’s adventures while on the Shinkansen from one destination to the next. While other tour operators made this approach difficult (if not impossible), Ninja Food Tours was accommodating and made it much easier to have a relaxed holiday that I could approach in a spontaneous fashion.
Overall, I 100% recommend using Ninja Food Tours at least once for first-time visitors in Japan. It’s a great way to really dive into the food in a fantastic setting with someone local to help lead the way.

Ninja Food tours provides an outstanding introduction to the wonderful food of Kyoto. Our tour guide, Moe, led us to one marvelous venue after another--including intimate establishments we could never have found on our own. She not only brought us to the food--in doing so she also educated us on how people in Kyoto live, eat, and entertain. Fried tofu skins were just one of the unique items we enjoyed under her congenial guidance. From the Nishiki market to a stand-up bar, tempura restaurants to hidden local haunts in the Gion district, she showed us how to eat--and eat well. She even gave us tips for other places to go in Kyoto, including her favorite Ramen shop --Wajouryoumen Sugari, which we visited the following day and really enjoyed.
