Tour summary:
3 days, 2 nights for golden triangle tour Oct 8-10, 2019. Requested english speaking guide, with accommodations at 5 star hotels (additional cost compared to default 3 stars)
Planning:
I did most of the initial planning over email. Shanu (Tour owner) was very responsive to all my questions. When I landed in India, I called him to finalize the details and was able to get hold of him easily. I had issues with using the online payment portal, but Shanu was very understanding and flexible in making alternative payment arrangements.
Structure:
We had one driver (Maharaj) for all 3 days, but a different tour guide in each of the cities. We landed at Delhi airport, where our driver picked us up and we started immediately on the tour.
The vehicle was a Toyota Innova, which met our requirements (3 adults) and was air-conditioned. There is a lot of time spent in the car especially travelling from city-to-city so be prepared for that. Would suggest getting an Indian sim-card for your unlocked cell phone. It is very cheap, and comes in handy if you need to call the driver/tour guide. Not required, but nice-to-have.
Accommodations:
We stayed at the Marriott in Agra on the first night, and in the Holiday Inn in Jaipur. They were both excellent. The rooms were luxurious, and the service was prompt and friendly. It really helped us out to get a great shower and a good night sleep after long days of traveling/touring. Both hotels were very western-friendly, and included free buffet breakfasts.
Tour(Sites Visited):
I won't get into the full listing of all the places we saw, but we did catch all the main attractions in each of the cities. The default tour is very comprehensive but they are flexible if there is something in particular you want to see additionally. The main things you cannot miss:
Delhi - Raj ghat (tomb of Mahatma Gandhii), India Gate
Agra - Taj Mahal - go at dawn for most beautiful view, Fatehpur Sikri - which is a huge fort (not to be missed)
Jaipur - do the Elephant ride at the Amber fort (once in a lifetime experience)
Driver:
Maharaj was extraordinary. He was our driver all 3 days and went with us from city to city. He was a safe driver, and knew how to navigate the busy city streets. He was very friendly and we felt very comfortable when we were in the vehicle with him. Highly recommend him.
Tour Guides:
We had 3 guides one in each city, and they were each really great in their unique ways.
Delhi - We had Jimmy who used to be a history professor but now does tours all over india. He was very knowledgeable and explained a lot of the history of the sites we saw, and we learned a lot about India.
Agra - We had Ayush (not sure of spelling?) in Agra who actually helped us get settled in the hotel that first night, and took us to the Taj Mahal the next morning. He was super helpful, and took a lot of pictures so my family could all be in the pictures together. He had a photographer's eye and suggested a lot of great spots for beautiful pictures.
Jaipur: We had Sunny in Jaipur. He was quite funny with a real positive personality. By the third day, we were pretty tired, but he brought a lot of energy and helped us enjoy the last few sites on our tour. He even took pictures of us when we did the elephant climb and sent them over to me after.
The only thing I would caution is that on each of the tours, they will take you to a local shop to show you how some local specialty crafts are done. This is pretty much just a sales pitch designed to get you buy things. Agra - it was hand-woven carpets, Agra - it was inlaid marble, Jaipur - it was precious stones/jewels. You will watch a demonstration of the skills, then they will ask you to examine the store for things to purchase. You will feel obligated to buy something after watching the demonstration but you don't have to. Just be prepared for that. You are free to not buy anything, but you will feel quite a bit of pressure. That being said the items being sold are high-quality and they do ship anywhere in the world.
Value: The cost of the tour was in US dollars, charged per person. It included everything (hotel, monument fees, car/driver, two breakfasts) except for lunch and dinner. We paid a little extra for the 5-star hotel upgrade, but it was totally worth it. Before settling on Raj Tours and Travels, I did a lot of shopping around, and the prices were generally in the same vicinity. My family and I feel like we got really great value for the money we spent.
Overall experience: Would highly recommend Raj Tours and Travels. Everything was organized well, and the people we dealt with were friendly and knowledgeable. Good value for money and a great life experience.
