First things first…our driver for this trip was outstanding and this review is not a reflection on him. The review is about advertising and charging what you think is a great deal only to be charged more because what other choice do you have when in another country without transportation? When researching transportation to Arenal it was important to find a price that would include departure and return. The description in this ad stated I would be picked up and returned to the original destination. So I went ahead and purchased the ticket and entered the date of pick up and hotel destination and the return date information. But when I received the voucher it only provided the pick up date information. But since the ad clearly stated pickup and drop off was included I was not concerned. I messaged the company through TripAdvisor to change the hotel destination, which had changed to La Mansion Inn Arenal. This change was confirmed by the company. The company continued to communicate with me through WhatsApp which seems to be common and in hindsight in the future will keep communication on TripAdvisor. I also messaged the company regarding the pickup date but received no response. On the day of pick up I was informed that because the hotel they were taking me to was farther than where they would normally travel I would have to pay an additional $100 outside of the TripAdvisor platform. Needless to say I was livid and why was this not stated at the time of the hotel change? Had I known this I would have had enough time to cancel the reservation. Their response, honest mistake. After a compromise we settled on $50. Fast forward to the day before our return date because I had not heard from the company. I messaged them to coordinate a time and I was told there was no reservation. Keep in mind I’m communicating with the same person from just a few days ago. I gave them my reservation number. The same reservation which I had asked about confirming my return pickup when I had reserved the trip but never received a response. They were very friendly and respectful and more than willing to come pick us up but I would have to pay another fee ($300). No thank you…lesson learned. I brought up the way the advertisement was listed on TripAdvisor and they said that was out of their control as TripAdvisor had written it and I would have to take it up with them. I reached out to TripAdvisor and their response was regardless of how it read, I had only received a voucher for one date and not two dates. Wait, what? Shame on you TripAdvisor…I’ve always held you to such a high standard. And if this were really TripAdvisor’s position why has the language of the ad now been corrected? I refuse to be taken advantage of and there’s no telling how many travelers have been caught in what I consider a shakedown. Fortunately Costa Rica has a pretty awesome public transportation system and for $20 we rode the bus to Alajuela in 4 hours which was loads of fun and brought back lots of childhood memories. We realized from this trip when traveling to Arenal/Nuevo Arenal from the Central Valley a car rental is the way to go because the price point for taxis/Uber/private transportation is not ideal.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not exceeded which is always our seal of satisfaction, and all due to what could've been a misunderstanding.
We understand that you were dissatisfied with the extra fee charged for the change in your drop-off location. However, We would like to clarify a few points to provide a more accurate representation of the situation.
Firstly, It's important for customers to carefully review their booking confirmation and communicate any changes or requests in advance to avoid misunderstandings and additional fees. We completely understand last-minute modifications and we are always happy to help, however, we also expect you to understand that your modification changed the route to a completely much further new location, which also means a different price.
I would like to clarify that you only booked a one-way transfer from San Jose Airport (which you also modified at the last minute to an Airbnb) to La Fortuna de Arenal, and not a roundtrip as you have claimed in your review. This was clearly stated on the confirmation you received after making your booking, and also on the TripAdvisor website advertisement before making the reservation. Additionally, you did not provide us with any drop-off hotel information until the last minute, which made it challenging for us to plan ahead or be prepared for your pick-up and drop-off accordingly.
Moreover, when you did finally provide us with the hotel information, we realized that it was located in a different area than the one you had initially booked (many kilometers further). As a family business, we always strive to provide the best-personalized service possible to our customers, and we pride ourselves and believe that we were as flexible as possible in accommodating all of your last-minute modifications. We even negotiated with you and gave you the lowest extra fee we could for driving the additional distance to get you there.
We would also like to highlight that private transport is the easiest and the most popular way to go, being a flexible and convenient option for those who want to sit back and relax while traveling, and it can be scheduled anytime from any airport, hotel, private home, or identifiable landmark in Costa Rica (rates vary depending on the route or distance), but it may not be ideal for everyone, especially those on a tight budget. As you suggested, public transportation or renting a car may be better options in some cases.
It is perfect for those who want to travel comfortably and safely with their group, without having to worry about driving or navigating unfamiliar roads. We can even provide options for scenic adventures to attractions along the way such as a short hike in a national park, a visit to a coffee plantation, shopping in a traditional Costa Rican town, or admiring a waterfall.
Once again, We appreciate your feedback and hope that this information clarifies any confusion that may have arisen. We used Faro Travel for 3 private transports of our 7 person group. They are very professional and easy to communicate with (use What's App if you can). They are not stuck to exact tours and can arrange anything you need. We used them for jungle tours as well as transportation. Over the days we have met many of the family and found them all delightful.

We took more private transports in our trip. First we stayed one night in San Jose, after that took us the driver to Arenal area where we stayed for 2 nights. From Arenal they drove us to Rincon de la Vieja and after 2 days to Samara beach. We stayed 3 days on Samara beach and returned from there to the airport. Our driver Greivin was very helpful and respectful, he gave us really good tips where we can eat locally. We had nice conversations and learned about costarican culture, music, countryside, social system. I heartly recommend Faro travel service, thanks a lot.
