Pass on the sledding but fly with Alpine Air
The alpine air team was amazing! Very professional and friendly. The reason for 4/5 stars is the mushing team (dogsled team) on the glacier was not great. It was clear they were over the tours as they were direct and a bit uninterested in our time there. They went through the motions to check the box rather than going to extra mile for the tour. The dogsledding was quicker than expected, we spent a lot of time hanging out on the glacier and seeing where they lived. That was cool but definitely not what we expected. All other groups were able to dogsled together, however my fiancé and I were told to split up so we can each drive a sled for a family. Meaning we couldn’t do this together and also drove individuals we did not know. This was a bit concerning should something have happened. They also shared with us how poor their relationship was with the alpine air team on the ground which we thought was weird. We would book with alpine air again, but strictly a tour with them rather than transferring to a third party.

Stuart, thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful review and for letting us know how this tour can be improved. I'm sorry to hear that you were not able to ride the sled with your fiancé, and we greatly appreciate your willingness to participate in that way. Every guest is important to us and should receive the same high-quality experience our dog-team partners are known for, whether it's the first day, or in your case the second-to-last day of the summer dogsledding season. We hope you'll fly with us again in the future where we can share with you even more stunning scenery of this region. Again, thank you for this honest review, it's very important to us. Best wishes, Christina Gerber, Alpine Air Alaska

Awesome Lifetime Experience
aug. 2021 • Par
Awesome and amazing experience. The chopper ride is somewhat quick, but scenic the whole way. A great way to get to see Alaska from high.

You have plenty of time to meet and pet the dogs before and after going on the sled ride. The staff is friendly and understanding you’re there for the experience and to take photos and videos. You have an abundance of time to do that.

Playing with the dogs is great! The actual dog sled ride is prob 20..25 minutes or so with some breaks in between for the dogs and for your party to switch spots in the sled from standing to sitting.

They have boots, pants and coats there too to be warmer if you need it. Our day was sunny and 60 and perfect. Normal winter gear was fine but some days I’m sure are much colder.

Great times and great memories!

Punchbowl glacier Helicopter and dog sledding tour
aug. 2021 • Familie
Wow. Alpine helicopter ride to punchbowl glacier for a dog sledding tour was phenomenal for the whole family! The weather was perfect late August, so the views were stunning. You fly over The Valley which is full of rivers and surrounded by snow capped mountains. Passing through the pass to the dog sledding glacier camp. The dog sled trainers were welcoming and wonderful :) so passionate and patient. They coached us through it all! We met the race dogs, learned about the sleds, dog sled on top of a glacier at 3,000’ through the Chugach National Forest, played with 3 puppies, and toured the trainers camp. Would absolutely recommend doing if you find yourself near Girdwood, Alaska. An unforgettable experience 10/10

Great Glacier dogsledding tour
jul. 2021
It was a great experience. The weather was nice, the flight was very quick and smooth. It was lots of fun to play with dogs who live on the glacier year round and learn how to sled which was very easy :).

The highlight of our trip
I can’t rate this tour high enough. Not only was it the highlight of our trip in Alaska but the tour company was amazing! We had a bit of unexpected medical emergency in the morning and they found a later group to switch our tour time so we still got to go. I can’t say how grateful I am for their willingness to help us out in a tough situation. And, the helicopter ride, dog sled ride, and of course - the puppies were fantastic!

Give yourself time for rescheduling!
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to experience our dog sledding tour due to bad weather. The rating isn’t because of fog—we know they can’t control that! But despite having a full extra free day we kept in case of a need to reschedule , they were too busy and couldn’t accommodate us. I wish they had been clearer about this in the advertising, because it sounded like there would be more flexibility given how unpredictable weather here can be. We would’ve organized our trip differently to give ourselves more days for rescheduling if we knew this, so if you have your heart set on dog sledding, give yourselves more than one extra day for rescheduling options!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I regret that we did not meet your expectations, and I share your disappointment that we were unable to operate your tour due to weather, and did not have room to reschedule your tour during your remaining days in Girdwood. Your patience with this is greatly appreciated, and I assure you that this is not the norm. Weather in Alaska can be unpredictable and on occasion, clouds move in last minute and we have to cancel the flight at short notice. When this happens we offer our guests the option to reschedule for another time/day, switch to a flightseeing tour when/where weather is better, or receive a full refund. We are usually able to satisfy everyone, but your case was an obvious exception. The state is seeing a record number of summer visitors, and everyone from restaurants to rental car companies and hotels are pushed to capacity. We are among many small tour operators who have received a dramatic increase in bookings this season, and when Mother Nature sends us multiple weather days in a row that require rebooking guests as was this case, we simply couldn’t accommodate rebooking every single person while still providing an environment that is safe and fair for the dogs. Our team works hard to provide an exceptional experience for our guests. We are proud of the tours we offer and the safety first culture that is the foundation of our business. I hope that if given the opportunity, you'll give us another shot. You are welcome to reach out to me directly at info@alpineairalaska.com. Christina Gerber Alpine Air Alaska

Not nice for the sled dogs
This experience was really hurt for me by the way the dogs are treated. There were around 40 Alaskan Huskies living on the glacier. Their existence was mostly just being chained up in rows on the snow, unable to touch any other dogs, with a tiny plastic igloo (with no door) to shelter from bad weather. They seemed largely starved for affection - or just interaction- but some showed signs of maladjustment, like pacing continually or barking incessantly or being afraid of anyone approaching them. It was not a good experience for those dogs. The highlight for them was pulling sleds (essentially in a loop). They loved that exercise , of course.

The helicopter flight was about 5 minutes each way, which was cool but brief.

I can’t recommend this activity.

Thank you for visiting us and for your review; we rely on your feedback to help us improve our operations and we take your comments to heart. Providing a safe and enjoyable experience for our guests and for the dog team is our most important responsibility. For our helicopter glacier dogsledding experience, we partner with Mitch Seavey’s IdidaRide Sled Dog Tours, one of Alaska’s most esteemed kennels. Mitch is known for holding several Iditarod Championship titles and for his family's multi-generational legacy of excellence in sport of dog mushing; what's more important is that he's well known and respected in the mushing community for having high standards for the care and health of his dogs. I tell you this not to diminish your opinion, but to reassure you that we work with professionals who will take your comments very seriously and will always take action to support and improve the wellbeing of the dog team. To address some of your specific concerns, the dogs are under constant care of the mushers who live on the glacier with the huskies. As working dogs - athletes - who prefer temps below zero and are born to run, summer conditions on the glacier are ideal. The sound of the helicopter and the arrival of new people excites the dogs who associate people with their chance to get picked for the sled; they start barking for attention, “pick me, pick me!”. The mushers limit the number of tours they do per day so the dogs can be attended with routine care and training and ample time to run. While the dogs are training on the remote glacier camp in the mountains of Chugach National Forest, if they’re not running the sled they need to be tethered for safety, to prevent them from escaping into the surrounding wilderness. When they’re not on the glacier, they’re back at home at the IdidaRide kennel which is the first tether-free kennel in Alaska with plenty of room to run and interact with other dogs, as seen here: https://vimeo.com/270912927?from=outro-embed The IdidaRide crew is considering a tether-free area for the glacier as well. I assure you your comments will help to improve the experience for the dogs and our guests, thank you for your compassion and care in writing this review. Kindest regards, Christina Gerber, Alpine Air Alaska

Best Experience in Alaska
jul. 2021 • Venner
This was hands down the best experience! If you are going to spend money in Alaska- spend it here!!! Everyone was extremely helpful from the front desk, to the pilots, to the staff on the glacier. The dogs were cute and sweet. The pilots take you up in the helicopter for about a 5 minute ride to the glacier. They drop you off and then you get to spend the next hour or so learning about the dogs, dogsledding, and how to operate a dog sled. Afterwards, you get to run a dogsled team and then hang out with all of the dogs (and puppies). What a wonderful way to see Alaska and have a hands on experience.
