Once in a lifetime experience
okt. 2021 • Alene
I had an unforgettable experience hiking Kili via the Machame route. I chose 7days due to a higher success rate but being the only trekker in the group and doing quite well, I challenged myself and tried to shave one day off. The team was extremely supportive, I was treated like a queen. My guide, Liver, was such a great guide! I let him set the pace and with his “pole pole” he was the main reason I got to the summit in one piece. He even gave me his water when my camelback froze way sooner than I had anticipated! And the team of porters - where to even start. They deserve all the credit. I wonder what the success rate would be if every tourist had to bring his/her gear, sleeping/cooking supplies, and food. These young men are incredible - strong, fast, positive. I’d have never made it without their help. Also, food - it was fantastic! Having a warm dinner made all the difference and gave me the energy to keep going. The chef always made way more food than I could possibly eat, and the meals always tasted so so good. What an experience I had. Thank you for treating me like a queen.

7 days Machame Route
aug. 2021
The communication during booking was excellent (rapid and detailed). Thanks Lima!
The team who came with us on the journey was great. They pampered us and we literally had nothing else to do but hike, eat and relax. What a luxury hiking experience!
Our guides, Rama and Charles, were attentive to the need of each member of our group and made the hiking journey a memorable experience.
On summit night the team was even more supportive and their enthusiasm and singing skills kept us moving up until we reached the top.
I highly recommend Monkey Adventures.

The 7 days trek was well organised. During the week everything (food, equipment, guiding etc.) was great. The staff was very helpfull and friendly. The whole team wanted us to succeed and we felled that we were in good hands. Our guides Rama and Charles were professional and supportive.

However the information the Monkey office should have given us prior to the trek was lacking. For example they didn't give us information about the water purification tablets in advance and also other important information was lacking. There also seemed to be misscommunication between the office staff and the team.

I had an amazing experience with monkey adventures! The crew was super nice. The food was excellent and my guide James was very friendly and helpful.

I can really recommend monkey adventures! I had an awesome time on this trek and I‘m sure I wouldn’t have made it to the summit without this kind and supportive crew.

Kilimanjaro - 7 days Machame

First of all, we have to mention that the communication regarding the organization of the trip was the best, we got quick answers to everything we needed.
All the crew that came with us on the mountain was amazing, great people. The guides, Brigthon and Allen really helped us to reach the summit. They knew exactly when and how to help us.
Second thing, the cook was really good, all the food he made was delicious. We didn’t expect to eat this much on the mountain.
We strongly recommend this company, especially this crew. We couldn’t have done it without them. Asante sana!

I could not imagine worst than that
aug. 2021
I don't even know how this non local company can be so well rated, maybe people doesn't know local companies or maybe we had bad luck. Let me explain:
- Before departure: we need to rent some equipments (quite expensive, and not the prices mentionned by monkey advanture, 350$ for the full set). Then someone from monkey adenture tell us that in addition to the trek, we have to pay tips for the crew, per day and per person at the end of the trek (around 350$ - and we gave 400$ because the crew were so nice and monkey adventure don't pay well their guys).
- Day 1: we have been told to be ready at 9am, teams arrives in late at 10:30, we jumped in the car for just 18km and arrived at machame gates were we need to wait just 15mins, 2 hours later, we are still waiting to start the trek.
- Day 4: the sleeping equipment were so bad that after 3 nights of not sleeping at all we decide to go for 6 days
- Day 6: after the climb, we decided to wake up early (5:30) to be at the hotel asap. The trek ends at 9am, we wait 2 hours for the car to arrive, then we need to go to the money adventure office for feedbacks, the manager laugh at us when we explained that we didn't sleep during the whole trek. After that they ask us to pay the tips that was supposed to be paid in credit card as explained before the trek by someone from monkey. But no, we spent two hours in town trying to get 1200$ in tanzianian money. Finally back to the hotel at 13:30 (more than 4 hours after finishing the trek).
After getting feedback from friends that booked with other companies, monkey adventure is a shame. Please book with local companies, at least it will help more tanzanian people who were very kind to us.

Dear Pierre and Readers, I’m Fred Namwandu - owner and director of Monkey Adventures Tanzania and I wish to address points mentioned by Pierre. Firstly, I would like to thank Pierre for booking his Kilimanjaro tour with us taking his time to share this feedback. We welcome feedback from all clients whether positive or negative and negative reviews give us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and offer even better services for our future clients. I do acknowledge that our team was delayed in meeting clients at the hotel and that the mattress provided was not to clients' liking. I sincerely apologize for these issues and have explained more about them below and I’m working with my team on avoiding these problems for any of our future clients. But I am very sorry to say that most of this review contains outright false claims. Below I have pasted Pierre’s review and our response to each of the points mentioned in his review. ---- Pierre wrote : I don't even know how this non local company can be so well rated, maybe people doesn't know local companies or maybe we had bad luck. Our response : We are rated well primarily because of our crew. Pierre and his party also acknowledge this and gave 5 stars in the feedback forms submitted to us. They form the most critical aspect in a tour operator's business and we are fortunate to have talented and committed crew for running our show. Other important reasons people rate us high and book with us are our competitive rates, detailed information during sales. Pierre’s party gave our sales team 5 star feedback as well. Pierre and all of his party also gave 5 stars for meals we provided and 4 stars for the overall organization. Although none of that has made it to his review on Tripadvisor, we are glad to have provided a positive experience on above mentioned points based on detailed feedback forms submitted to us by Pierre and his party. Pierre’s claim of us being a non local company is false. Monkey Adventures Ltd, which runs Kilimanjaro tours and Safaris in Tanzania is owned 100% by me (Fred Namwandu) and I’m a Tanzanian citizen who was born and raised in Tanzania (just like my parents and grandparents and all of my great grandparents). My family comes from the Southern part of Tanzania and I worked as a Kili porter and a guide for over a decade before starting this company. I currently live in Arusha with my wife and son. I’m not sure what makes the company a foreign company as per Pierre. If he asked us about company’s or my credentials or records we would have gladly shared. It is hurtful to hear that my company, which I started from scratch with my own sweat and blood, can be claimed as non-local without any proof. We are more than happy to share details of ownership if requested by anyone. Infact, the Tanzanian Tourism Department does not even allow non Tanzania owned companies to get a license to offer Kilimanjaro tours. Although most of our team that handles Kilimanjaro tours and Tanzania safaris are from Tanzania, we do have some sales staff from Kenya, Social media marketing is outsourced to India and we also work with overseas agents and sales representatives that send clients to us from across the world. Website building and maintenance and search engine optimization are also outsourced to foriegn companies. But just because few of our employees and service providers are based outside Tanzania, it does not make the company non Tanzanian. I understood early on that to be the best company in Tanzania, I have to work with the best people that I can afford to hire. And if that means I hire some who are not from Tanzania, then that’s the best option for the success of my company. But the vast majority of our workforce, including permanent employees and contractors, come from Tanzania itself. A French company hiring a Tanzanian citizen with offices in Nairobi and Dar es salaam would be looked at as a positive and desirable thing as the world works towards more diversity and openness and freedom from borders. But if I, a Tanzanian, born and raised here, who owns 100% of my company, wants to hire a non Tanzanian, I am accused of being a non local company. ---- Pierre wrote : Before departure: we need to rent some equipments (quite expensive, and not the prices mentioned by monkey advanture, 350$ for the full set). Our response : Pierre did not rent any equipment from us. I repeat. Pierre did not rent any equipment from us and seems to be confused by the whole situation. We, Monkey Adventures, don’t offer any gear rental service at the moment. We do have plans to get into the gear rental business in future but we don’t offer this at the moment. We tell all our customers that they are free to get their own gear or rent gear from any gear rental shop in Moshi, and we will help them with the same. One of the rental companies that we suggest even has their prices online on their website. We did not mention gear rental prices to Pierre as this changes from shop to shop and these rental values are set and maintained by rental shops over which we have no control. But we mentioned a broad range of 100-200$ per person depending on gear they would need so they have a rough idea of what to budget for gear. We don’t earn any commission on gear rental from any gear rental shops. ---- Pierre wrote : Then someone from monkey adventure tells us that in addition to the trek, we have to pay tips for the crew, per day and per person at the end of the trek (around 350$ - and we gave 400$ because the crew were so nice and monkey adventure don't pay well their guys). Our response : We sincerely appreciate the tip paid by Pierre to our crew and extend our thanks on their behalf! However, the rest of Pierre’s statement from above is unfortunately false. Pierre makes it sound like we told him about tipping only at the last moment. To prevent such accusations, we have our tipping recommendations online on our website for anyone to read along with explaining how it's a standard practise in this industry that evolved since decades and why we can’t include tips in prices. In that we also clearly say, tips are not mandatory. Link to this page was sent to Pierre as well when he was booking his trek with us in March 2020 (1.5 years before he did the tour). We titled the section in his mail as “Tipping Recommendations” under “Important information for your Kilimanjaro hike” sent by us in March 2020. Trivialising this by saying we don’t pay our crew is unfair. We pay standard market salaries for guides, cooks & porters and it's impossible to hire good crew without paying salaries. We are able to maintain our reputation in the market mostly because of the top grade crew we are able to hire and retain. But the way salaries and tips to crew in this industry have evolved, part of incentive is paid by the tour operator directly as salary in advance and part is paid by clients as tips at the end. There are a few high end luxury tour operators where tipping is not expected but the prices they charge are over 100% to 300% higher than what we charge. No Kilimanjaro tour operator that offers tours in our price range or even that charges 50% higher than our prices includes tips in their prices. If there is any example that can be shared with us, I will be glad to correct myself and apologize to Pierre and refund the tips he paid to our staff from my pocket. ---- Pierre wrote : Day 1: we have been told to be ready at 9am, teams arrives in late at 10:30, we jumped in the car for just 18km and arrived at machame gates were we need to wait just 15mins, 2 hours later, we are still waiting to start the trek. Our response : Delay in meeting you at the hotel is our mistake and I sincerely apologize for the same. Kennedy, our briefing manager, was at your hotel at 9am. But the rest of the crew was delayed as there was a traffic block due to a Government convoy. Waiting at Machame gate however is not in our hands or control. There are formalities that are done in advance and some formalities that are done at the gate. We finished all processes that were to be done in advance (paying clients park fees) well before you reached the park gate. However there were a significant number of tourists waiting to enter Kilimanjaro that day and there was a long queue at the gate for different processes from registering/verifying clients/crews documents by park authorities to weighing the luggage to be carried by porters. It might take 15-30 min at the gate as Pierre mentioned on days when there are very few tourists but often this can take 1-2 hours based on the volume of tourists and crew at the gate. On the day that Pierre got delayed, there were several other parties from different tour operators that were facing similar delays at park gate. The crew Pierre had was an experienced crew that have done 100s of treks and they don’t loiter around park gate while clients are waiting to get in. But they have to follow the queue and wait for their turn like the rest of the crew at the gate. ---- Pierre wrote : Day 4: the sleeping equipment were so bad that after 3 nights of not sleeping at all we decide to go for 6 days Our response : I apologize for the inconvenience caused and sincerely appreciate the feedback in this regard. It's a new and welcome insight for us. Sleeping equipment is usually considered in 3 parts - tents, sleeping bags and sleeping mattress. Pierre was unhappy with only the sleeping mattress during our feedback session. They were too thin for his liking. The mattress we provide is about 2 inches thick when purchased and can be between 1.5 to 2 inches depending upon usage. This is the same mattress that 95% of the tour operators use on Kilimanjaro. And we almost never get any complaints about the mattress. This is a standard mattress that most companies, including the luxury tour operators use because it's compact, lightweight and built for backpacking trips. A thicker mattress would be heavier, occupy more space and might need an additional porter/porters. This is our first experience - among several thousands of Kilimanjaro clients we served - where clients said they couldn’t sleep due to mattress being too thin for their liking Having said that, we are very sorry that our standard foam mattress did not work for Pierre. We understand each client's requirements can be unique and we do believe getting a good night's sleep can make a big difference to clients' experience. We are sorry we couldn’t offer a choice to Pierre for selecting mattresses. We offered a refund to Pierre by mail shortly after their climb, to compensate for this inconvenience. And based on his feedback, we are also planning to offer a thicker mattress and Thermarest with additional porter as optional addon for future customers. So far we haven’t been able to find a vendor in Moshi that can provide us thicker mattresses suitable for mountain climbing tours but we are confident that we will find a solution for this in a matter of a few weeks. We would like to thank Pierre again for this specific feedback and providing us the opportunity to improve our services. ---- Pierre wrote : Day 6: after the climb, we decided to wake up early (5:30) to be at the hotel asap. The trek ends at 9am, we wait 2 hours for the car to arrive, then we need to go to the money adventure office for feedbacks, the manager laugh at us when we explained that we didn't sleep during the whole trek. Our response : We are a small company with a limited number of vehicles. Pierre’s group initially booked for 7 days trip. This was then cut short to 6 days while on the mountain. Guide informed us clients are considering descending a day earlier but hasn’t confirmed the final decision in advance. Because of poor network on mountain, we were dependent on guide to call us and confirm the revised plan and timings. Exact time of arrival at the gate was confirmed to us on the last day when the guide had a signal to call our staff in Moshi and by then we had no vehicles free. Since we don’t have vehicles permanently stationed at the gate, it took us some time to arrange an alternate vehicle. And for this delay, I apologize to Pierre and his companions. ---- Pierre wrote : After that they ask us to pay the tips that was supposed to be paid in credit card as explained before the trek by someone from monkey. Our response : One more false claim. We never tell any of our clients that tips can be paid with a card. Infact, it’s the opposite. We clearly state in our tipping recommendations page, that “As a company, we don't get involved in the tipping process.” and “Tips are given directly by you to the crew.” Even when clients ask us to accept tips by card or wire transfer in advance, we refuse to accept this amount and ask clients to pay directly to the crew. If we get involved, it involves a lot of accounting, taxes (18% will be deducted as VAT straight away if we process the amount) along with questions and doubts both from clients and crew on whether we are distributing the entire amount paid towards tips by clients to us. So we never get involved in the tipping process. So we are not sure why Pierre thinks we agreed to accept tips by card before the trek. ---- Pierre wrote : But no, we spent two hours in town trying to get 1200$ in Tanzanian money. Finally back to the hotel at 13:30 (more than 4 hours after finishing the trek). Our response : This was Pierre’ decision, and not ours. Pierre wanted us to accept tips with a card, which as per our policy we are not allowed to do. All of our customers prepare tips beforehand and it can be paid either in US Dollars or Tanzanian Shillings as per client's convenience. Had they wished, we would have taken Pierre directly to the hotel and they could sort the tips issue later as well. There was no pressure on Pierre to pay tips immediately right after the climb. ---- Pierre wrote : Please book with local companies, at least it will help more Tanzanian people who were very kind to us. Our response : This final point I agree 100% with Pierre. Please do book with reputed local companies whose credentials you can verify. When you book with a foriegn company only about 40-60% of money comes into Tanzania. When you book with a local company, over 90% of the money comes into Tanzania. (Most of the remaining goes into marketing campaigns over which there is no option but to pay to foriegn entities like facebook/google/instagram etc to get clients). Monkey Adventures is a locally owned and professionally run Tanzanian company. Perhaps someone misled Pierre into thinking we are a foriegn company or perhaps Pierre himself came to that conclusion on his own for reasons best known to himself. But in either case, if he just asked us for our ownership details or documents, we would have gladly shared.

Kilimanjaro team simba!
Amazing experience! Cannot say enough about our guides, Mwinyi and Kalvin and our whole team that went up with us! Highly recommend the 7 day trek versus the 6 day. We may not have ended up summiting if not for the extra day and our guides and their constant encouragement! They always ensured our comfort and safety were top priority!

We had an amazing experience climbing Kilimanjaro with Monkey Adventures. Our guides Matthew and Godli made sure that we were always safe, well-informed, well-fed and in a great mood for the challenges ahead. Our trip was perfectly arranged and pleasant thanks to these two highly-experienced, humorous and considerate guides. We would use this company again in a heartbeat.

Amazing crew!
mar. 2021
Me and my friend completed the 7 day Machame route our guide was Remmy and he made us feel at ease straight away! He explained everything, went through our equipment, and throughout the hike informed us of what to expect. It was extremely well organized. The porters were all so friendly and went above and beyond for us - They really made the trip! I would definitely recommend this company to climb Kilimanjaro, we reached the summit, and would not have been possible without our guide Remmy and his team! Also, the food they offered was amazing, my friend is vegetarian and they catered for her with ease. Would highly recommend this company!
