Skrevet 1. november 2015

The tour was well-paced and planned, full of great historical information and stories, and our guide was terrific. CAF continues to bring great value to Chicago tours for visitors and locals alike by packing a wealth of history and culture into each tour. Highly recommend!

What a great tour from this volunteer-run org! In town for a conference & CAC came highly recommended from several different people - those history-minded and those not so much! The sites & tidbits were great and Charles was pleasant and knowledgeable. The bonus of being able to return to the center for a full week is a great perk & I only wish I had more time as I would’ve gone on another. The center itself is wonderful and a great overview of not just the history, but the current challenges and issues involving city architecture today. As someone who’s been in the museum field a long time, this is a great blend of information and call to action. Not really any opps for kids, but I’m not thinking those with young families are the target audience (though the shop has fab kids gifts). Being spoiled with many free museums & opportunities like these tours living in DC, I have to say I think this $30 was a great value & felt it a better one than some of the other museums & centers I explored. The group size of just about 10 was a good size and Charles did a good job of welcoming and getting to know why folks were there.
A few recommendations for CAC:
- Of course this will always happen in an urban environment, but several times our stops seemed to pop us right in the flow of pedestrian traffic at crosswalks not long after schools were letting out and the early start of rush hour. It was awkward and we were obviously in the way. Shifting things slightly would still provide the views, but help be a better neighbor on the sidewalk :).
- This is probably only a me thing as I apparently have small ear canals, but the earbuds (while they worked well!) were very painful and kept falling out of my ears. I’ve been on many walking tours, some of which use these devices and have had some work better than others. But these buds were the only ones I’ve ever found truly painful. That took away a bit from the experience.
- Would love to see some sort of intro to architecture tour, urban planning, etc. for kids and families! Lots of opportunity for STEM & civic crossover.
Not sure when I’ll be back to Chicago but I’ll most certainly be taking another of these tours or two!

Fascinating tour, saw beautiful architecture all around the Loop and guide was very knowledgeable. Have walked by these buildings many times and never really noticed some of the cool stuff outside or inside.

Our tour was “Historical Treasures of Chicago’s Golden Age” led by amazing CAC docent, Barbara. We were very excited that to explore the interiors of several buildings on this tour and it was a perfect choice for a rainy day. We took the underpass at the Illinois Center, place of numerous shops all closed on Sundays, and ended up under the canopy facing the 37 floors of Carbide and Carbon Building with its elaborate gilded rooftop shining even on a rainy day. It is home to Pendry Hotel now and we took a peek at its lobby the next day.
Then we went inside the Cultural Center of Chicago, home to the largest Tiffany dome in the world, which is a lavish marvel of magnificent neoclassical style. Everything is amazing in this building: gorgeous staircase adorned in Carrara marble with elaborate green and gold ornaments, then the Dome itself crowning magnificent Preston Bradley Hall of course, solemn Grand Army of the Republic Memorial with its wooden walls and gorgeous ceiling… It is wonderful that Cultural Center of Chicago is free to enter - something not to miss, if you visit Chicago.
Chicago Athletic Association Hotel was another gem. Its beautiful coral facade stands out in its elegance and originality. It was built in Venetian Gothic Revival style and those of you who had been to Venice can easily recognize distinctive arched windows of Venetian Palazzos. Barbara told us that its interior is gorgeous. So true! We visited it ourselves the day after.
Next stop was at the Grand Dame of Chicago Hotels, the Palmer. Its lounge still reflects the glory of its old days and is a perfect place for a cocktail.
We also stopped at the very unusual Sullivan Center corner entrance with its magnificent overhanging metal cornice adorned with intricate ornaments. This corner of State and Madison was named the world’s busiest corner because in the beginning of the 20th century Sullivan Center was a birthplace of one of the largest department stores in the country and hustling and bustling high-end retail quarter.
Our last stop was at the Macy’s on State Street, which occupies historical Marshall Field and Company Building. You can see its stunning Tiffany main hall ceiling from the first floor and then go to the 5th floor to admire its beautiful details. The glass ceiling looks like blue sky above the temple of marble and brass. So lavish and elegant! There is not a bit of redundancy or overwhelming opulence in the majestic interior of the Marshall Field and Company Building, just pure elegance and grace.
Our small group of five undeterred by non-stop rain has completed this amazing 90 minutes tour at the Macy’s. We thanked Barbara and continued our Chicago adventures.

We took a 2 pm Historic Treasures Of Chicago’s Golden Age tour last Friday. Our guide was Bob. He was one of the most engaging tour guides we have ever had. He’s a veteran guide and his passionate love of Chicago architecture is contagious. Not only he is in possession of many facts and stories, but he’s also a master of storytelling and suspense and keeps his audience engaged throughout the tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned quite a bit from him along the way.

This tour (with Maureen) was excellent. She was well informed and very engaged in the history and architectural features of the 10 or so buildings we visited — all of them noteworthy examples of various renowned architects and architectural styles. She communicated clearly and responded thoughtfully to comments and questions. I have found that the Chicago Architecture Center has very knowledgeable docents. I had two previous boat tours with the organization, and this was the first of what I hope will be many walking tours.

Excellent list of buildings visited in order to better understand better Chicago's Golden Age of skyscraper construction. Excellent choices of which buildings to enter and see interior gems of Chicago, I would not have viewed or know about without having taken the tour. The tour guide was well informed, knowledgeable and friendly. Anyone looking to enjoy downtown Chicago and learn more about this beautiful city's history will enjoy this tour.
