After many months of excitement leading up to our amazing Scottish Adventure,
I finally met the extraordinary Annie MacDonald from Love Hebrides in April 2022.
As tourism is by far the backbone commerce of the Outer Hebrides, I always knew I wanted to hire a local islander with a small business.
Annie is an astonishing woman who is kind and immensely passionate about her Lewis & Harris community. Annie is also a great story-teller of traditional tales and folklore passed down to her through generations. As she drove us to each hidden gem, she would share interesting tidbits. We even learned a bit of Gaelic.
Annie proudly holds her traditions close to her heart as one of the few islanders that speaks Gaelic. Annie has taught her children Gaelic and says her grandkids will also speak Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic is still a predominantly spoken language on the Outer Hebrides, with more than 50% of the population fluent in the language. I admire her for having such pride in her culture and heritage.
Lewis is an oasis with stunning beaches, unspoiled fertile countryside, immense white beaches, rugged coastline, unique culture, and delicious food.
The simplicity of life on the island is what is most appealing to me.
Annie wasn’t just our private tour guide; she became part of our family instantly. Annie is funny, easy going, very flexible and happy to offer you the best tour experience.
Annie drove us around the winding roads of Lewis safely. Lewis is mostly flat, with miles of peaty moorlands stretching across the center of the island. Then around the coast you’ve got stunning sandy beaches and rocky headlands in the east, and the deep waters of Loch Suineabhal.
We visited the Black-houses and Shielings. Annie explained not only the history but also detailed information about their uses and how families lived or sheltered in such housing. She was very informative and having been born and raised on the island all her life she has immense knowledge of the area.
Annie also took us to the impressive Calanais Standing Stones; the beautiful beaches; Dalmore Beach, Traigh Ghearadha(Garry Beach), Mangersta Beach, Dailbeag Beach, Ardroil Beach, Tolsta Beach, and Bosta Beach. Each uniquely exquisite. We took a private whisky tour of the Abhainn Dearg Whisky Distillery in Uig, and afterwards, we all dined on the west coast of Lewis at the Uig Sands Restaurant.
On our second day, we stopped at Lews Castle, and then drove by historic Stornoway Harbour. The harbour is hugged by charming shops and a variety of restaurants.
Just before heading out to airport, we ended our great tour with a stop at Mealabost Beach. A traditionally Gaelic-speaking village in Point on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis, in Scotland's north-west.
We had a memorable trip that will live forever in our hearts. Annie is the perfect tour guide to see the Isle of Lewis & Harris. If we ever make it back to the Outer Hebrides, I would love to connect with again!

Fabulous tour. Annie was the best, most informative guide. She should me lots of hidden gems. It’s so nice to a “homegrown local” as your guide

Absolutely incredible day with Annie. She was very accomodating and friendly, and gave a real sense of what Island life was like both in the past and in the present. Unfortunately I had picked a day where a couple of the sights were closed, and she phoned to advise me of this prior to the day and offered the opportunity to change. While I wasn't able to on this occasion, she more than made up for it with what was available on my chosen day. Highly recommended!

Having visited the island a few times before, my partner and myself were taken on a day tour of Lewis by 'Annie' our tour guide, collected from our accommodation and driven around with a full commentary all day including some stops where she escorted us around attractions such as Black-houses and Shielings, she explained not only the history but also detailed information about there uses and how families lived or sheltered in such housing. She was very informative and having been born and lived on the island all her life had immense knowledge of the area and people making it a unique and priceless tour in which you will not match anywhere else on the island. The tour covered not only the regular tourist attractions and some you would not normally find or have heard of but also the history of the island and it's produce such as locally produced food, drink and clothing.
This tour is a must for every visitor to the island, dont think you can self guide yourself as you will miss out on so much history and information - this tour really does make your holiday and we fully recommend it.

So much to see and learn, so little time. Annie, our guide, gave us a good historical account of the island and allowed us as much time as we wanted at each site. We would never have seen all that we saw in a 6 hour day. (We didn't have a car, but even if we did drive ourselves around, we wouldn't have noticed the things Annie pointed out.) She customized the tour based on our interests, which included a visit to a local weaver and the Callenish Standing Stones + more.

Had a thoroughly enjoyable day with Nigel the guide. Despite being the only passenger that day, the tour went on. First class knowledge of the history and natural life of Lewis and Harris. Cannot recommend this tour highly enough, saw some beautiful and fascinating sights. All the best with the business.

Guide-driver very informative about the island’s impressive history, people and current times. Tour shows its striking geography and special sites. It included seeing modern day, high quality weaver which was very interesting and made me appreciate tweed even more. Highly recommend this day tour.

The Love Hebrides day tour of Lewis comes highly recommended. Our guide had excellent knowledge about the island and its history, and she presented the island in a lovely way. In short, we had a wonderful day out! Do take the tour if you have the chance!

went on the love hebrides tour and it was amazing. a fantastic trip out and highly recommended. The brand new bus was stunning and we negotiated the notorious single track roads with ease. I saw so much throughout the day, I never realised Lewis had so much archaeology so accessable, everywhere!! highly recommended

Hello,
We (family of 4) are planning a stay in Isle of Skye during June2022. We are interested in visiting Lewis. Do you offer tours from Skye?

Well, the charm is not flying in; rather take a ferry to the outer Hebrides. From Edinburgh, it might take up to a day and a half to drive there, depending on bus or ferry schedule. I don't know about flights. You could google Stornoway airport.

Hello, We will be in Stornaway on 9 July. We would like to be part of a small group tour. Would a pickup and drop off at the ship terminal/port be possible for our family of three, and included in the cost of this small group tour as published? If so, how do we book requesting pick up and drop off at ship? Kind regards~

Hello, so sorry for the delay in replying, i only just found your enquiry. Yes, we can pick you up and drop you off at the harbour, no problem at all.
Book the tickets but email me seperately to arrange the pickup if that's okay? Any problems just let me know.
