I honestly regret going here. All of the animals look so scared and unhappy. I was distressed by the whole experience. There was a wallaby with a joey in her pouch - some people weren't doing anything wrong trying to take a photo but she was clearly scared and had no where to hide so she hopped right into a window at full speed thinking she could escape. Then she just crouched near a tree trying to hide as best she could while people threw food at her.
There's snakes and lizards in glass tanks with people tapping and banging on them, all of the animals have no where to hide or get away from people. It was upsetting.
I wish I hadn't paid to support this venture.

Dear Simone. Based on your description, we are wondering if you are actually referring to Kuranda Koala Gardens? In any event our enclosure has a very large retreat area and a rest area, plus a secondary retreat area. Glass fronted enclosures are the best and most hygienic way of providing reptile displays and are industry standard. Please feel free to email our manager at kurandamanager@koalagardens.com to clarify anything you'd like to know. We have staff on hand all day. We have no record of you making any comments to our team? Always best to say something if anything is of concern to you.

Avoid booking online: the photography sessions only allow you to pet the koala, not to hold it in your arms like in the sessions you can buy on site.
This is not absolutely explained, neither on the website nor when you arrive at their desk: we booked (and arrived) from Italy and the disappointment of my 11yrs old daughter when she discovered she couldn’t embrace the panda was enormous.
You can just pet the koala placed on a small eucalyptus plant, smile and in less than a minute you’re done (next one please).
You should see the photo they took of us, both the paid one (35 AUD) and the ones taken with our smartphone: without love, without worrying in the least about the fact that for us that would have been the only chance in our life to live that experience and take that memory with us to Italy (which, for those who are not too comfortable with geography, is almost two days away by plane).
Back to the whole experience, the koalas and other animals are well-kept but the environment is cramped, mostly delimited by old fences and sheet metal, some of which is rusty.
What strikes you most negatively, however, are the people who work there, not very kind and not very attentive to the guests who have difficulty speaking and understanding their language.
Having said that, with the right (not high) expectations, if you’ll be there only once in a lifetime, we suggest to have that experience.

Great place. Not huge but doesn't need to be. Hugged a koala and fed some roos! Lots of different animals to see so I'd recommend a visit.
Birds and butterflies also worth a visit. Combine it with the train ride if you have time.

We went to both Birdworld and Koala Gardens. Was a little disappointed in Koala Gardens as you would expect it to be full of Koalas. Unfortunately its not, you do see around 7 Koalas in various exhibits which are very cute. There is a lot of other animals which makes it more than a Koala Garden and probably needs re-naming. They have wallabies, kangaroos, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and a few other animals.
There is more emphasis on getting your photo taken with a Koala, which I believe you really need to book as early as you can.
Even though I was a bit disappointed, this exhibit is still worth a visit.
We also went into Bird world, which was really fun. Having all the birds free to fly and poop on you. The macaws, cassowary, lorikeets, ducks, and so many more to see and let settle on your arm, head. Don't worry if you don't have seed for them, look around in the feeders and grab a handful. Probably much preferred the bird world to Koala garden as it stayed true to its name.
Highly recommended while your at Kuranda.

Loved being able to see the koalas up so close. Had never fed birds and they were intriguing to watch eat. Very clean in both places

We had such a great time! We were a bit weary after reading some reviews but we honestly had such a great time! It was really well taken care of & everything was accessible and set out so well. It’s a small animal sanctuary, don’t go in expecting a city zoo, it’s not… but it is great.

Great day to see the Koalas and the birds. We really enjoyed our day! So glad we got to hold a koala. The gondola was a fun experience as well.

This was a cute setup but you definitely get through it quite quickly. It’s fairly decent value for money. Only criticism was I didn’t really see a lot of staff floating around keeping an eye on the tourist and making sure rules were being followed.

It was a real bad experience for us as we were not given the right photo with koala....and even though they took 4 photos ....no option was given to us for which one to choose .....where as a family after us were treated better ...it was complete discrimination done .... the staff was pathetic

I've been in touch with this person and requested they provide more information.
The review is inconsistent with what we do as we always show the customer the photo to ensure they are happy with it. We are happy to reshoot the photo if there is any issue. Always want to ensure we have customers satisfied with their experience.
All we can do is wait to see what other information comes in.

This area is quite new by the looks. Its very well set up and will hopefully come up great in a few years. Very much setup for overseas tourists regarding koala holding and grabbing those memories photo's. Rest of the park has a few australian native animals which was good. We entered through the Birdworld entrance within the Heritage Markets.

I was wondering how much the cuddle a koala experience is?are you able to take photos with your own camera?and if you want to cuddle a koala but not have a picture is it free?

I can't remember how much it was. But yes some one can take pictures using your camera as well as the official photo but no if no photos taken you can't cuddle one for free. As the money raised goes into planting new eculptus trees for the koalas
