Pros first: motivated young guides conducting a tour through true wilderness at the foot of Davidson Glacier. These guides live here with no running water or electricity for the 5 months of the year that they are leading tours … so this IS in fact wilderness. Guides was very funny and upbeat, and also well-informed. Comfortable boat ride to/from the cruise ship, with naturalist who pointed out wildlife along the way. We enjoyed putting on the rubber boots and life vests and the “soft hike” through the woods. Shout out to guide Lydia - she’s awesome!
Now cons: the lunch was mediocre; the ride to/from the tour site is over an hour each way ... but that’s what we expected because a cruise ship by definition stops pretty far from the “wilderness”. We would have preferred the chance to actually use our oars on the canoes, rather than have them be powered by motors. We agree with the comment that the rocks at the base of the glacier were rather ordinary.

We had a great time on this excursion. The staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, especially Marie (who was our guide during the canoe trip) and Boston (who helped ferry us on the boat trip from/to Skagway). We lucked out to have good weather that day, so we had a good view of the glacier ("Dave!"). The mountain views beyond the fireweed field were the most picturesque portraits we took during our whole trip. And we got to eat a bumper crop of wild Alaskan strawberries! It was magic. We also had a bit of time during our trip back via the boat and so we were able to stop at a waterfall and to see a whole group of sea lions up close (as well as several bald eagles). We couldn't eat the food because we are vegetarian and unfortunately, our cruise line didn't give us the option to pick dietary preferences, which apparently other cruise lines do. So, I can't comment on that. We just had to suffice with tons of berries (which was fine by us!).

While our guide and the naturalist were very friendly and engaging, there just wasn't anything special or adventurous about this trip, and calling it a wilderness safari is misguided. Most of the time on this trip is spent in transportation of some kind, such as the first boat and the bus. You do not really get very close at all to the glacier, so it's important to know this right off the bat. The hike is short and nothing special. The canoes have motors, so you only paddle a few strokes until it gets going. It was the least amount of wildlife we saw anywhere in Alaska, and because they crank out tours, there's nothing really that's wilderness, and it's all rather quite well traversed. What I would keep in mind is that there are other ways to see glaciers, so all the time it takes to get to this one, then without really getting very close, and without any real adventure or wildlife, just isn't worth the cost for time or money. The guides mention the rocks on the beaches, which were completely ordinary. I had good rain gear on, but still got wet by the end. I would also not book this tour unless you check that the day before it's forecasted to be good weather and not raining. Because it rains so much in this area, if rain is forecasted, you might be rained on for hours. Also, when it rains, just like anywhere, wildlife retreats until there is a break, so you'll likely not see any or much. The staff were nicely intentioned, but I just didn't feel like there were enough reviews that described the experience.

This was a fantastic excursion. Our guides, Darien and Josh were super awesome. Very friendly and energetic and provided lots of info about Alaska, the area and it's history. You start with a 1 hr boat ride from Skagway to the beach near the glacier. During the ride, you will see many waterfalls, sea life, bald eagles, and possibly other glaciers (weather permitting). Once at the beach, you board a bus which takes you to camp to get life jackets, raincoats (if needed) and boots. Then it's a short hike to the first canoe, which gives some great first views of the glacier and surroundings. One more transition to a second canoe and then you land on the delta in front of Davidson Glacier. You get pretty close to the glacier, but not actually touching it. It's hard to get a much closer experience though anywhere. It's not a very strenuous journey as there were several young children who were able to do it. Aside from the amazing nature and scenery, all the guides really make the excursion so enjoyable. We learned a lot of cool facts during the boat ride and as well as the bus and canoe ride. After you finish the glacier hike, you will have lunch (Sandwich, chips & a sweet snack) before you take the boat ride back to port. Overall, plan to be out about 5-6 hrs. On the boat ride back, we made stops to get a up close look at the waterfalls and sea lions (not sure if this is standard). Overall just an amazing experience. If you book directly with the company, you may save some money vs booking through the cruiseline excursions. I think it's definitely worth the money and time as there isn't a lot to do in Skagway. Even with the excursion, we still had time to walk around town, shop, get some fry bread (must do) and a drink at the Skagway brewery.

Underwhelming. This was the 1 experience my wife and I regretted doing during our 1-week AK cruise. Did not get close enough to the glacier. Had other better views of glaciers elsewhere during the week. Canoe portion was a bit lame. Provided lunch was fuel but not good. Not worth the approximate $325 per person cost. On positive side, the young guides were motivated and did a nice job. Boat ride with naturalist was also ok. We are probably outliers with higher expectations.

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience on the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari didn't meet your expectations. The rapid recession of Alaska's glaciers has impacted our ability to safely reach the face of the Davidson Glacier during the tour. Depending on daily conditions, we may be able to get closer or might be restricted by the river, which are factors beyond our control. Additionally, we are sorry that you were displeased by the lunch provided. Due to the remote location, our options are limited, but we strive to offer a satisfying picnic experience. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed your time with our guides. We value your feedback and would be happy to discuss your experience further. Please feel free to contact our office directly.

Darien and Bill were amazing throughout the entire Glacier Point Wilderness Safari. The Davidson Glacier boat, bus, hiking and canoe trip in Skagway was spectacular. Darien and Bill were our guides throughout the day and they both really knew their stuff and explained everything while answering every question. While all the individuals who were involved in this trip were excellent, a special thank you to Pittsburg Bill and Darien.

This excursion was one of the best I have been on. The scenery was incredible- I have never seen anything like it. The operation was seamless, and our guide Lydia was absolutely exceptional. She was knowledgeable, kind, and so much fun to be around.

Nicolette had great facts and an even better sense of humor, outstanding experiencing the glacier up close! Saw sea lions and humpback whale on commute back too! Would be cool if they added an air boat!

This was well worth the time. We were very fortunate to have excellent sunny weather. I have a couple of tips: This is not a "safari". It is an hour boat ride to a beaching area where you will board two old buses that take you (10 min) to a base camp. The guides are well versed in the area and you will need to be at the front of the bus to hear them. There you will exchange your shoes/boots for knee high rubber boots. Wear thick insulated socks! The only thing between your feet and the cold water/mud is the thickness of the rubber boot. You will walk through the rain forest to a put in point where you will row a canoe to another take out point. Not difficult. The wearing of the bulky life jacket will make it very cumbersome to bring along a back pack. Water is standing in the bottom of the canoes so be careful with where you place carry-ons. The guides were very personable and informative. Beautiful unspoiled nature at it's best. The views were spectacular.
Bottom line is that I would do it again.

The tour guides were amazing and so kind! They were a highlight of this tour and had wonderful personalities!
My husband and I had one day in Skagway and wanted to see wildlife if possible and go hiking. The tour description and title was very misleading. It should have been titled canoe and glacier rather than wilderness safari. There was no safari aspect the speedboat did not stop for wildlife and was over an hour long each way. We took a bus and then two canoes to get to a beautiful glacier but were not able to get close to it. This tour was spent mostly commuting and lacked safari and wildlife scenery. We felt that we wasted this day and wished we could have seen more of Skagway and glacier bay than Alaska the 6 hours we spent on this tour- 5 1/2 hours just commuting.
