This is a substantial fortification built high up overlooking the open sea and the beautiful little town beneath its walls. We couldn’t go in , maybe it wasn’t safe , adds a feature to Warkworth .

Terrific castle to visit. The usual ruins, but also a large amount of solid castle! Lots of different rooms to explore and good information available. Useful audio guide available. Fantastic views of the coast.

Really lovely castle and quite in tact for a ruin, you can get around quite a bit of it though the very top floors seem to be locked off now, i'm guessing due to deterioration. Well worth a visit if you like castles, staff also friendly and helpful.

Structurally, very similar to Warwick Castle, except it is a ruin. It is an interesting ruin, with lots of rooms to visit. The audio tour brings it all to life and provides good explanations. There is one difficulty, early on - the instructions for getting to the Grand Hall are vague at best, and resulted in 3 of us wasting a fair bit of time. The hermitage is on the other side of the river and can only be visited via a rowing boat, but, in October, it is only open on Sunday and Monday, so was no use to us on Tuesday. The walk by the river is charming, with plenty of wildlife to see.

Good- impressive castle as alot of it ( although ruins) still remains intact. The audio guide is free & very informative. Easy to walk around and steps not to steep. Views over the town are great showing Warkworth at its best. Lovely village & surrounding houses.
Bad- price as per usual, no discounts
Ugly- Toilets basic & unpleasant

Recommend you use the audio guide which comes as part of the entry fee.

It’s an interesting castle & in a totally commanding view, completely understandable why a castle was built on this spot!

We arrived just after it opened at 10am, it was nice & quite at this time, but was getting busy when we left a couple of hours later.

Very good audio guide. Atmospheric setting above the coast. And the layout of the buildings so interesting

Because of time constraints, we visited the Hermitage only. However, in order to buy the tickets, it is necessary to go into the castle, so we did have a brief look and it is a dramatic and lovely building.
The hermitage is reached by means of a 1/2 mile walk along the pretty, tree lined river. The walk in itself is a real pleasure - tranquil, lush and with good chances to spot riverside wildlife. Bear in mind, if your mobility is limited, that the 1/2 mile described only starts when you reach the river bank. There are a few hundred yards of steepish downhill paths to negotiate first, from the castle car park.
The real adventure begins upon reaching the crossing, where a small row-boat waits to ferry visitors across to the hermitage. Progress is necessarily unhurried and even the two minutes spent drifting across the calm and dreamy water makes you want to take the oars and explore the river a little more. However, you are very soon amongst the lush trees and shrubs on the other side and a short, steep slope takes you to the entrance of the hermitage.
It's hard to describe the atmosphere around this cave -turned-chapel. Outside is almost jungle-like in the dark, green shade of the great trees, the steep, plant encrusted cliff rising up behind the cave, roots twisting down amongst the rocks and the intriguing cave-moth before you.
Inside, the feeling of age is tangible and the imagination goes into top gear. The ancient carving of arches, altars, much-eroded statues and, above all, the wonderful vaulted roof really make for a memorable, almost other-wordly, experience.
It is small and requires only a short visit but makes an unforgettable impression.
The two guides - boatman and gatekeeper - were excellent. Not only full of interesting facts but good-natured, friendly and helpful. It was a real pleasure chatting to both of them. My elderly mother is stiff jointed and very unsteady on her pins and the boatman was incredibly patient and considerate with her whilst loading and unloading the boat.
One of the highlights of our trip.

Whilst visiting Amble Harbour we spied across the Coquet River a large Castle, so decided to pay this landmark a visit the following day - we were not disappointed!

Make sure you go on a day when the boat trips to the Hermitage are running, as this was definitely worth the extra money. The boatman / guide was humorous and informative, and the cave carving was surprisingly impressive.

On to the Castle itself . . . . we would say that the free audio guide is a must, as it explains all about the site and provides a good route around the buildings. The Castle Keep is an unusual off centre design with a central light well. The whole place was really just a fortified stately home, back in its day.

We spent approximately three leisurely hours here, exploring the nooks and crannys of this fabulous place.

As an aside; You can easily walk from Amble to Warkworth following the path alongside the coast road, its approximately 30 minutes.

This was one of the best castles of its type that we have visited. To anybody who says that it is expensive, we would say join English heritage and all thse places are free.We purchased a guide book,it definitely enhanced our experience. The approach to and tghe entrance of the keep was stunning. The whole of the keep was very much worth a visit
