Book your tickets at the castle!
jul. 2021 • Par
Potentially this is a great sojourn from the village. However, with COVID-19 forget it. On our visit English Heritage had a printed note saying they are 'trying' to get back to normal. The result no boat and no idea for visitors who want to take the trip over the river.

One thing to note is you need to book a slot and buy tickets from the castle. Don't just rock up expecting to visit as you'll be disappointed.

Nice walk regardless from the village. About 20 minutes each way via the river.

Beautiful chapel
sep. 2019 • Par
After a lovely walk along the tree lined banks of the river Coquet, you have to cross the river to get to the chapel.
A lovely man rows you across in a row boat. He was really friendly, and very informative about the history of the Hermitage.
It’s only a small chapel cut into the rock face, but it’s very atmospheric and ancient yew trees give it a beautiful feel. We really enjoyed it on a warm sunny September day.

The boatman is the best!

The hermitage is interesting to see, but only takes about 5 minutes. The real treat is the short boat ride. The man rowing makes it seem like a party. He's a gem, funny and caring to both tots and old folks like me.

Amazing acoustics, entertaining boat ride and good photo opportunities

We were rowed to the Hermitage over the River Coquet - a short trip made pleasant by the oarsman and woman of English Heritage, who run the Hermitage an Warkworth Castle. The walk to the Hermitage takes about 5 minutes and it's an interesting site - our party included a number of enthusiastic singers who tested the acoustics of the interior to great effect. The trees along the river provided us with some hilarious photo opportunities too. Worth a trip if you are English Heritage members to whom entry is free, pricey if you aren't a member.

The hidden Gem of warkworth

It’s easy to get carried away with the amazing castles and scenery on the coastal route. It’s definitely worth going to. Amazingly preserved bit of medieval history !

Far from the madding crowd

If you’re going to Warkworth Castle, then ask about getting an inclusive ticket that covers the Hermitage too, because the inclusive ticket wasn’t advertised when we visited the castle.

The Hermitage is a short riverside stroll from the castle along the banks of the Coquet, a pleasant walk in its own right. The Hermitage – a reclusive medieval site once occupied by someone who sought a solitary life – is only open on certain days, accessed by means of a very short ferry ride (probably not much more than 60 seconds, if that) over the river. If necessary, the ferryman can issue an admission ticket from his kiosk on the Hermitage side of the river.

The hermit’s abode was partly carved out of a rock, and it would be useful to bring along a torch in order to see your way clearly inside the rock recess. Although I’ve rated this visit as “very good”, that’s primarily because of its unique nature: there really isn’t much to see at the site, but it would be churlish to rate it as “average” or lower, because it is unusual. It gives a brief insight into times and experiences long gone by. A small, very worn, stone carving on the rock near the inside of a window is said by some to be of the Virgin Mary and Joseph, but the configuration of the two figures suggests that this may be an incorrect interpretation.

Wonderful

A wonderful hidden treasure! For something very different this is very worthwhile. A short walk to the boat (and he will take dogs) and you are a cross the river to a hidden tiny chapel with incredible carvings and a sense of what it would have been like to live in this beautiful haven

What a Way to Live!

Combine with a visit with Warkworth Castle. The Hermitage is a chapel and priests house carved out of a sandstone cliff above the River Coquet. It's about a half mile walk along the river from Warkworth Castle and ends with a boat ride across the river. The Ferryman was full of information about the Hermitage and the area in general. Once across the river it is only a few hundred yards to the Hermitage. The site is run by English Heritage and if you are not a member there is a cost for the ferry. It's very tranquil and a great way to arrive.

Dog friendly

Although relatively dark inside our dog enjoyed visiting the Hermitage with us. Interesting spaces carved out from the rock face adjacent to the river with very tranquil atmosphere. The rowing boat across the river was delightful.

Castle is impressive and the walk around the outside of the castle is nice which leads down into the main road through the town. Absolutely stunning and quaint
