Book your ferry ticket at the castle first. Short walk along the river from the castle, to the boat jetty then a 2 minute row across. Quick walk up to the cave, small but really interesting and atmospheric place carved onto the rock face. Also note the carved and dated flood levels. Thanks to Steve the boatman for a safe trip and useful tour guide.

So why Very Good, mainly for the walk down the river bank to the boat stage on a warm sunny day. Not so sure about the half mile distance marker though it felt a lot more than that. Sign on riverbank states closed.

Your reviews say national trust cards are accepted but that was NOT THE CASE a wasted journey only tempered by a circular walk to the hermitage although that was closed

Visited The Hermitage after a brisk walk along the Riverside at Warkworth. Received a very friendly welcome from the barman and had a great lunch of home made Game Pie which was delicious. Then followed by home made Strawberry Cheese Cake which was the best I've ever had. My husband and I throughly enjoyed our lunch. Great food, very good staff and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be back.

My wife recommended this place to visit, we are english heritage members but for a family who isn't, it's canny pricey for a quick mooch around that only takes 10 mins, it's very interesting if you are into history and our guide ( who also takes you across the river on the boat) was a great laugh and knowledgeable, the kids more interested in climbing the trees tho, says it all.

Well worth a visit via a short river crossing by ferry.. It is only a 20 minute feature but one not to be missed. WARNING. Get your ticket at the castle before you walk to the ferry otherwise you will have to walk there and back again as we did!!

The Hermitage is a beautiful hidden gem with an intriguing history, reached by rowing boat across the River Coquet. Tickets must be bought and ferry time booked at Warkworth Castle.

Potentially this is a great sojourn from the village. However, with COVID-19 forget it. On our visit English Heritage had a printed note saying they are 'trying' to get back to normal. The result no boat and no idea for visitors who want to take the trip over the river.
One thing to note is you need to book a slot and buy tickets from the castle. Don't just rock up expecting to visit as you'll be disappointed.
Nice walk regardless from the village. About 20 minutes each way via the river.

After a lovely walk along the tree lined banks of the river Coquet, you have to cross the river to get to the chapel.
A lovely man rows you across in a row boat. He was really friendly, and very informative about the history of the Hermitage.
It’s only a small chapel cut into the rock face, but it’s very atmospheric and ancient yew trees give it a beautiful feel. We really enjoyed it on a warm sunny September day.

I'm planning on visiting the Warkworth Hermitage next weekend and was wondering if the river crossings are tide dependent? It looks a fascinating place and I'd hate to miss seeing it due to being there at the wrong time! Thanks

No you cross a small river. But check the times of opening as its not open all the time you can look it up on the castle web site. Enjoy your visit
John.
