Point Walter is a very large reserve park abutting the Swan River. There are large stretches of beaches along the river for water sports. We saw lots of kayakers and paddle boarders. Rentals were available. There are washrooms and change facilities but a lack of picnic tables. There is a restaurant but we did not try their food. This is a very popular spot and parking can be difficult. Arrive early to avoid a long walk. Overall a very good visit.

Point Walter is a recreation area, to the south of the Swan River. It is popular for picnics and BBQs, and in days gone by it was popular for Sunday school picnics. Point Walter is almost midway between Perth and Fremantle. Point Walter's most notable feature is the sandbar, which extends one km, almost to the middle of the Swan River, at low tide.

We parked at the large car park at the end of Honour Ave on the side of the wide expanse of Mosman Bay. Here there are many parking bays even if this area is very busy on weekends. There are toilets at the beginning and at the end of the parking area. In the pedestrian area there is a café and a shaded playground for children. This place is mainly frequented by families also due to the presence of BBQs and ample seating opportunity in picnic tables. In addition, the whole area along the river offers large natural shaded grassy areas and tiny sandy beaches. There is a boat ramp and a jetty for boats, while the calm water of the river offers a good opportunity for water sports such as paddleboarding. At the top of Point Walter is the other end of Honour Ave with another car parking. One of the most prominent features of this Reserve is Point Walter Sandbar. When the tide is out, a wide strip of sand emerges from the waters of the river and connects the tip of the mainland with a tiny islet with vegetation in the middle of the Swan River. On this sandbar, that extends over 1 kilometre into the river, you can walk from the foreshore out into the river to take some pictures. Birdlife on and around this sandbar is mainly represented by seagulls and black swans. We combined the visit to Point Walter with that of Blackwall Reach Reserve where the Swan River narrows significantly. The resulting increase in current as the river flows into the narrow gap of Blackwall Reach has eroded the bank where now it is possible to see limestone cliffs that rise eight meters out of the water. This reserve offers an interesting opportunity to spend some relaxing time in the natural and beautiful scenery of the Swan River.

Busy Sunday lunch time. Lots of families with young kids. Great location on the Swan River. Parking is tight but worth the visit.

What a cool place to visit. We went here early one morning, so not many people. The highlight is going out on the sandbank. You can watch the kitesurfer, and generally enjoy the amazing views from this part of Perth.

Point Walter is in the suburb of Bicton, about 12 kms (8 miles) south of Perth, or around 7 kms (5 miles) north of the port city of Fremantle. In the old days, its lush lawns were a favourite location for Sunday School picnics. In Perth's baking summer heat, Walter is often measurably cooler. Point Walter is at the western end of Melville Water, on the southern shore of the Swan River. Point Walter's most famous feature is the sand spit, which extends far out into the Swan River.

A lovely place for a walk by the river, also nice to bring your own picnic and find a shady spot. There is a nice cafe for drinks and snacks and also a restaurant. Plenty of parking spots during the week, weekends must be busy. View of the river and Mosman Park are pretty.

I went with my daughter and her friends to the Dinner at Dusk event in February. What a beautiful place to relax with family and friends. Plenty of families with picnic hampers and children enjoying themselves. The food trucks were plenty to choose from and we chose a Thai dinner. Cooked to order this meal was fantastic, sitting under the trees looking over the lakes and listening to the live music. What a brilliant time we had.

Shady, green, riverside water sports and activities available, a nearby cafe, playground and the option to just fall asleep in the shade of a tree.
Perfect for a relaxing or active time. You pick.
You may have to drive around about to find a parking spot.

Can you take a kayak? Is it a big walk from the car park?
Skrevet 6. februar 2016
Absolutely you can. There is a lower parking area for about 25-30 cars if I remember correctly, and you can always unload your kayak first, opposite the jetty area, and then go to park your car too.

Yes I am 99.9% sure that there are BBQ facilties at Point Walter. I think they are near the kiosk. There could be some also just up the hill from the jetty. Lovely grass area there too.
