Such history!

We love this site even more than Port Arthur. This time we walked to the Air Shaft which was worth seeing and we love the rest of the site too. A must see in this area.

Sens..... Sational !
apr. 2021
This FREE site on the other side of Port Arthur, is a truly MUST DO if you are visiting the area. Its a sealed road until the last km or so.

This remote site has many many plaques of information all over the place. Once you get used to looking down at rocks and bricks, you find pathways to numerous ruins, all very natural and set to the stunning blue backdrop of Eaglehawk Bay

Allow a few hours to explore, its a wonderful experience

Hidden Gems of Convict History
jun. 2021
Great convict ruins with helpful interpretive plaques and maps. The paths were well labelled, graded for difficulty and given accurate walk timings (for us oldies). For its price (free) it's ripper value. Plenty to explore, nice views, good quality toilets.

A hidden gem on the Tasman Peninsula!

Great Sight
mai 2021
Another great free sight. There is quite a distance between sights but there are car parks by a couple of them. Some parts are very hilly to get to. This sight is certainly worth a visit and we ended up spending a lot more time here checking it all out. Very interesting part of Australian history. Highly recommend a visit.

If we only had more time

We didn’t realise how much there was to see here, you could spend most of a day walking between the ruins, driving to the next site etc. It’s not far from Port Arthur and free to enter, most areas have descriptions and it’s truly fascinating. Next time we will allow more time and see everything.

You can spend ages here walking between the ruins and the various sites - some quite far apart and we drove to others. Yes, some just look like rock rubble but others are quite impressive, many with a story to tell. A must see if you are visiting the area.

While visiting the Port Arthur Historic site, the guide mentioned that it was worth a drive to this site, and the whole family agreed once we got there.
It is by no means a large site compared to PAHS, but personally we enjoyed the character and charm of these old buildings instead. If you're lucky you might spot the odd wild rabbit eating some grass, but watch out for the ant nests - don't stand in the 1 spot for too long.

Little Known Convict History
nov. 2020
Cannot believe I had never heard of this site which has such a fascinating history and so significant to the development of Tasmania. Here is the first operational mine site in the state and this was a punishment station for Port Arthur where repeated offenders of ‘the worst class’ were sent. The site held up to 600 convicts.
Whilst the site has fallen into ruin there are signs of conservation being undertaken.
There are several walks that you can take and along the way are discreet signs of what each site was used for - clearly this had been a bustling settlement.
Suggest you obtain (or download) a copy of the Visitor Guide before arrival as services at the site are minimal.

Interesting history
aug. 2020
We came here the day after we had visited the main Port Arthur site. We did the circular walk from the main carpark, to Point, up the incline, past the mine shaft and back down around. It was reasonably well signed. The panels are worth a read as the history in fascinating.
