Calahorra Castle, in a remote part of Andalusia in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is a daunting vision of massive circular towers and high walls, encircling a perfectly charming interior courtyard in the Renaissance Italian style. Said to be the first attempt at leaving behind the Gothic approach in the Iberian peninsula, this castle is remarkably well preserved, with detailed friezes, columns, pilasters and wooden ceilings that, in spite of never having been restored, are in great condition, reminding you of the castle at Otranto in Southern Italian. With the snowy mountains as a backdrop, this hard to teach destination is one of the most romantic spots in Spain.

The castle is not signposted, there are no advertising signs or directions. If it wasn't for being seen from the highway, we wouldn't have stopped.Access by gravel track in very bad condition. Upon arrival, the door closed and a sign with a thunderclap. We don't even bother calling.

According to the sign on the door "VISITS. WEDNESDAY. SCHEDULE MORNING FROM 10 TO 1. AFTERNOON FROM 4 TO 6."
We drove up a hellish road at 5 (5pm) and there was NO ONE.

We were lucky to pass through the area on a Wednesday, which is the only day they are open to the public. It is private and is shown to you by a family that lives there. €3.
It is wonderful, but it could undoubtedly be much better if the heritage took charge of its maintenance and conservation.

I have read bad reviews and once visited, they seem exaggerated. The access, although it is not paved or well maintained, can be climbed with a car carefully and slowly. For 3 euros you have a guided tour by people who have lived in the castle. It is true that the conservation of the previous ones is not excellent, but it is not in ruins either. In fact, part of the things that are missing or damaged are part of its history, such as the civil war.

We went on Wednesday, March 6 and it was closed, there was no notice and they didn't answer the phone. The location and the building are exceptional but if you want to visit inside it is advisable to make sure it is open

If you plan to visit this (should be) beautiful castle-palace, keep some things in mind:
To get to it you have to go up a road that will put the underside of your car to the test, unless you use a 4x4. Not a Third Worldist, rather a cabrista, the eastern access road.
If you decide to go up on foot, you are also not exempt from risks among the stones, the rocks, the sinkholes..., a challenge almost on par with the Ironman (exaggerating a little, yes).
When you arrive at the Castle, it will probably take you at least one full lap before you find the access door, which is obviously not signposted (oh, and remember, it is only on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitable).
Once you find the door, if you are unlucky and catch the group that entered earlier leaving, you will have to wait until "the guides" finish their tour with the group they are with. Although there is a wire that can be pulled to ring a bell and thus notify you of your presence (all literally), don't get tired, no one will answer your call if you manage to make it ring. Of course, the wait will have to be done standing, and in more or less balance depending on your physical condition.
Of course, people with a physical disability that affects their mobility FORGET about the visit, it is not adapted to anything, nor is it expected, nor does it concern them. Of course, as an example of what architectural barriers are, it would be great, because you should have them all, which is not good for anyone, even though some "people" think that this is just the problem of the "disabled lady, that one should complain about vice, that the lack of adaptability is not announced" (free and friendly literary recreation of the outburst heard).
Once you manage to enter, and voluntarily paying 3 euros for "the guides to accompany you", you will be able to access the place, know in which room the marquises slept, ate, changed, that the patio is a different patio if you were a marquis or a servant , and some more question of, for me, little relevance, except the recommendation to buy a book written by a professor from the UGR, whose name I forgot to write down, which is relevant if you want to know the history of the place.
The interiors are sadly dilapidated and deteriorating more and more every day. Pigeon droppings, cardboard strategically placed to
collecting, in some points, said excrement, dirt, absence of floor, doors, tiles, apparently the result of looting..., in short, a heritage, historical and cultural drama, but, still, yes, it is worth seeing (If you don't have significant physical limitations, of course.)

I don't know for what strange reason, neither the house of the current Duchess of the Infantado, the owner of the property apparently, nor the Patrimony of the Junta or the Government of Spain, do something to prevent this jewel from disappearing. With the beauty that it could show and contribute to its already beautiful region, so in need of new economic boosts.

Go visit it, and visit the town and consume there, but unless one day the 3 euros are dedicated (with public supervision) to the maintenance of the building and its staff, save it by reading any review with your cell phone while you visit. We cannot be complicit in wrongdoing and negligence.

The truth is that the castle is very well preserved, only on the outside. Inside, the stables, the dungeons (without light) to be able to see them with the light of the mobile phone, parade ground, stairs of very damaged white Carrara marble, the rooms of the castle are not worth seeing, there is nothing and if You also add that it is very deteriorated inside and has zero maintenance. A disaster at the tourist level. The "guide" atypical person in these places. I don't explain anything about art or history, just personal anecdotes. They don't let you take photos.....Why is that?
The dirt and state of such a beautiful place is very alarming.
My personal opinion is that it is preferable to take a look around the outside of the castle, which is very beautiful, with beautiful views. You can only visit on Wednesdays. Price €3. It is a shame that since it is private it is not preserved. It could be a good stop......

They charge entry, €3, without ticket or receipt. There is no information of any kind regarding access, entrances, emergency exits, signage, etc. It does not have services for visitors and there were children and an elderly woman who asked about them. There is no lighting for the darker areas, such as the dungeons, where visitors used the flashlight on their cell phones to see something, embarrassing. A lady who acted as a guide and charged the entrance fee was unpresentable. Rude, saying swear words and crude expressions in front of children and adults. He doesn't explain anything because he doesn't know anything, he speaks loudly and in a threatening tone. He insists several times that people be careful and not let the children run because "they are looking for ruin for me," which leads one to think that he lacks any type of civil liability insurance. Logically, this lady does not provide any type of information in a language other than Spanish, but there were foreign visitors. The groups to enter are 30 people but in ours we entered about 50 because "that's it, I'm done and I'm leaving," in the words of the lady in charge. It only opens on Wednesdays and there is no appointment, you wait there like a herd without any type of facilities or attention to the visitor.

Magnificent place but not very accessible so after climbing on foot for 15 minutes we arrived at 4:15 p.m. and there the guide told us that the last visit was at 4 p.m. while on the internet and on the various guides they announced open on Wednesday from 10 a.m. at 5 p.m. with a visit of only 30 minutes....in short, very disappointed 😞 😞 😞 and the guide didn't want to know anything even though we had just driven 1 hour! Nice
