The Fukui Prefecture Dinosaur Museum is truly a gem in the world of museums. From the moment you walk through the doors, you are greeted by the wonderful design and layout of the museum. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome and valued as a visitor.

The educational material presented throughout the museum is top-notch, providing visitors with a wealth of knowledge about dinosaurs and their prehistoric world. The restorations and reconstructions of the dinosaurs are beautifully done, allowing you to truly envision what these magnificent creatures looked like millions of years ago.

What stood out to me the most was the thoughtful way the displays were laid out. Despite the museum being quite popular and busy, it never felt overcrowded or noisy. I appreciated the considerable thought and effort that went into making sure visitors could fully immerse themselves in the exhibits without feeling overwhelmed.

My visit to the Fukui Prefecture Dinosaur Museum made a huge impact on me and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. It is not to be missed by young or old and is sure to leave you in awe of the incredible world of dinosaurs.

A few days before my visit, I looked at the website and was appalled to learn that I needed to make a reservation online. When I gave up and arrived in Fukui, I discovered the existence of the ticket on social media. However, even though the reservation is full, he is not sure if the same-day ticket will be available, and when he asks at the hotel, it may be available, but he does not know until he goes. When I went there anyway, I was able to buy tickets at the door without any problems, even though the road to the parking lot has a lot of signs requiring advance reservation. I have no idea what the pre-booking system here means. Inside, there are a large number of exhibits centered on dinosaurs found in Fukui Prefecture, making this museum irresistible to those who like it. You can also learn about the history of the earth and it is worth visiting. Ignore the words that need to be reserved and this is the place to go if you get the chance. I think you can go in unless it's a special occasion like Golden Week.

A shiny giant dome appears in the mountains. It's just like the movie Jurassic Park. The staff are very kind.

The way you take the down escalator and enter another world is great.

The exhibits are impressive, and while they touch on academic topics, there are also dramas in the mini-theater, so you won't get bored. Above all, I was impressed by the display of the miraculous fossils discovered in Fukui. There are also stones on display. It's also good for people who like stones. There are also displays of sea dinosaurs and models from the pre-dinosaur era.

2024.06 Saturday / Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, Outdoor Dinosaur Museum

[Time required] 7 hours (outdoor tour about 2 hours)

[Cost] Dinosaur Museum 1,000 yen. Outdoor Dinosaur Museum Tour 1,300 yen (advance reservation)

[Parking] Free

[Impressions] I made a reservation online in advance. On the way there by car, there was an announcement on the electronic bulletin board that "reservations are required," but people who were okay had purchased tickets on the day. However, there were almost no vacancies for the outdoor tour, so advance reservations are essential. I made reservations about 40 days in advance for the museum from 9:00 and the outdoor tour from 10:00, and was able to get the time I wanted.

I arrived at the museum 10 minutes before it opened. At that time, the first parking lot was crowded, but I was able to park. (It was full by 12:00)

This was my first visit in 4 years and my first since the renovation, so I was looking forward to seeing the mummy fossils and the new building.

In the first 30 minutes, I walked around the B1F, looked at the souvenir corner, and then went to the reception for the outdoor tour.
After gathering at 9:50, we boarded the tour bus. The tour coordinator gave us some explanations on the way to the excavation site, so we didn't get bored.
Our second group first visited the excavation site, then the exhibition area, and finally the fun fossil excavation experience.
There is a tent at the fossil excavation experience area, so it's okay even if it rains. There are stones on the ground, so you need sneakers.
There are four staff members inside the tent who will determine whether they are fossils or not, and they will appraise any stones that interest you.
You can take home souvenirs up to the size of a fist. We were able to take home plant and shell fossils.
On the way back, the bus will teach you how to maintain the fossils you have brought home.
We returned to the museum around noon, so we went straight to the restaurant. The restaurant in the parking lot was full, and the restaurant inside the museum was also full, but we were able to make a reservation on the spot.
We were given a receipt saying that we had to wait 25 minutes, and we were notified by SMS, which was a convenient system. (Staff will also guide you to your seat.)
In the new building, I was able to listen to Shibata's lecture, "The Basics of Dinosaurs." There is no reservation system, so I arrived at my seat 15 minutes early, but by the time the lecture started, there were already people standing.
The three-sided Dino Theater was closed in preparation for a special exhibition, so I'll save that for next time.
I went back to the main building and took my time looking around, and ended up staying for seven hours.

It is about 20 minutes by bus from Katsuyama Station on the Echizen Railway's Katsuyama Line. This is a prefectural museum. The unique dome-shaped building houses 50 permanent exhibits. It is a very impressive museum that both adults and children can enjoy. The admission fee is 1,000 yen, half price for seniors at 500 yen, which is a great deal.

This is a newly renovated dinosaur museum. The dinosaur exhibits are amazing and the moving dinosaurs make interesting movements. It is also a museum where you can experience everything from dinosaurs excavated in Fukui Prefecture to dinosaurs from around the world. However, please be aware that if you are not an elementary school student or older, young children may be scared and may cry.

It's quite a distance, but it's a very interesting museum. The kids were scared of the moving dinosaurs, and the museum was so large that they couldn't take their time to look at them, but it was still worth the trip. If you bring a boy who loves dinosaurs, he'll be hooked. There was a park right next door with play equipment for children, so I might have stayed longer if the weather had been nice. This is a recommended spot where the parking lot is full and very crowded.

It was renovated last summer at a cost of about 9.4 billion yen, and there is a lot to see.
A huge three-meter-high screen recreates the movement of life-size dinosaurs from 120 million years ago. It just shows a three-minute video on repeat, though.
In addition, there are many full skeletons of large dinosaurs on display, as well as moving replicas of tyrannosaurus and plesiosaurs, so you'll never get bored of looking at them. Valuable fossils and mummies are also on display, so it's a must-see.

I went with a boy who loves dinosaurs. The facility is spacious and the exhibits are easy to see. It's clean, has many toilets, and is nice. My child was delighted with the life-sized moving dinosaurs.
However, the exhibits are for adults. Small children are not interested in the history, fossils, and types of soil, which are difficult. Just seeing the moving dinosaurs was enough for him.
The facility is spacious and there is quite a bit of walking, including the park outside.

There was a movie for small children (20 minutes) and a kids' space, so we spent a long time there.

In addition to loving dinosaurs, this museum is for people who want to know more about history, such as why they became extinct and how fossils were discovered and excavated.
I think it's too early for small children.

The museum was closed for upgrading when we visited in 2022. This time we made it! This is definitely the highlight of the trip for my 5yo. The museum is expansive and well-maintained. The range of dino exhibits is impressive. Per Japanese standards, I wouldn't expect anything less in terms of how well-labelled and thought-out each exhibit piece is. Technology-wise, not so much. I was thinking that perhaps after the upgrading, the museum may adopt AV technology like immersive tech or AR/VR to showcase some of its exhibits, but not really. Nonetheless, they do the good 'ol museum stuff really well.
