My wife and I departed Melbourne on 9th September and drove to Adelaide where we boarded the Ghan for an amazing rail trip to Darwin. The car (Isuzu MUX) came on the train with us for the princely sum of $ 630. We then spent a week in Darwin seeing the sites before heading to Broome along the Gibb River Road. We spent 3-days in Broome then flew home. The car was transported back to Melbourne by Broome Car Carriers for $ 2,100.
The Gibb River Road journey was an amazing experience but unfortunately two of the key attractions were closed off, namely Manning Gorge and Windjana Gorge despite the advertising saying that they were open. The other attractions were excellent, namely, Edith Falls, Lake Argyle, Bungles / Bungles, El Qesto, Emma Gorge, Zebedee Hot springs, Bell Gorge and Tunnel Creek. The hikes to the water falls and swimming holes can be a little strenuous but we're 71 YO's and didn't have too much difficulty. The helicoptor ride over the Bungles is worth it as too is sea-plane and boat ride to Horizontal Falls (ex Derby). THe wife loved her camel ride on Cable Beach. The museums at both Derby and Broome are not to be missed.
Apart from being pissed around by Virgin Airlines the whole trip was sensational but one word of advice - take you own 4WD and camping gear and you'll save thousands of dollars as hiring is incredibly expensive and comes with a massive cavet of conditions and restrictions. Also, suggest that anyone contemplating the trip plans to end the journey no later than mid September as the greedy proprietors of camping grounds start to shutdown their operations due to reduced trade as the grey nomads vacate the area due to rising temperatures. It gets very hot (38 - 42 deg) during September but the humidity is still down and the nights are cool.

We just spent two weeks doing the Gibb River Road and it was a fantastic experience. The scenery is stunning. It is a proper adventure. Lots of opportunities for hikes to gorges and waterholes.

We had a big 4WD which got us through the sandy rocky roads and through the river crossings. We did have one puncture so I would recommend taking an additional spare tyre.

We stayed in Cattle Stations with some luxury and some more standard.
Some other friends camped in the same locations.
We stayed in Bell Gorge Wilderness Camp for 2 nights, Mt Elizabeth 1n, Drysdale 2n, Ellenbrae 1n, El Questro 2n, Kununarra 2n, Bungle Bungle 2n, then back on the Great Northern Highway staying at Fitzroy Crossing for 1 night.

Eau,nourriture,essence et sacs poubelle+++,frontale aussi

Had been looking forward to doing this trip for years. We were in a 4 WD camping tour.
Apart from a few pleasant water holes for a dip there is nothing else. The road is extremely dangerous with lunatics driving too fast for the conditions. The camping grounds have pathetic facilities and are dusty and dirty. Freezing cold overnight and hot with no shelter in the day.
The most disappointing and anticlimactic holiday experience I have had.
Unless you want to continually be inhaling red dust give the region a wide berth

We had a fabulous 3 weeks in a hired 4wd camper travelling through the Kimberley including back from Kununurra along the Gibb River Rd. We headed out from Broome via Geikie Gorge, Mimbi Caves, Bungle Bungles, El Questro and Lake Argyle to Kununurra and returned along the Gibb River Road via Parrys Creek Farm, Ellenbrae, Mt Elizabeth Station, Imintji Campgound , Manning,Galvins, Adcotts and Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Dampier Peninsula back to Broome. We had hoped to drive to visit Mitchell Falls, Bell Gorge and Mornington but early in May the access roads were not yet open. The offset to some places being inaccessible was it was less busy and the countryside was wonderful with green spinifex, red rocks and blue skies and the waterfalls in the gorges all flowing well. We did get to Mitchell Falls via helicopter from our subsequent cruise so all was not lost.

Our 4wd drive camper was really well equipped with quality equipment on a high clearance 4wd with upgraded suspension and fit for purpose tyres. The Trayon camper was very functional and the great weather enabled us to cook outside.
We really enjoyed the flexibility of not being on a tight schedule so could spend time where needed. If you wish to travel the Gibb River Rd and Kimberley area consider hiring a high clearance 4wd so you can do justice to all the great scenery and walks in the area.

It’s not for the feint hearted but what a great experience. The road condition varies between lovely soft sand, rocky cover and terrible corrugations. But the landscape is stunning especially the southern end - so many ochre and black ranges. The light early morning and evening is brilliant. By late May there was little serious water to get through. Accommodation if not camping is a challenge. There is El Questro with great options in the north and Bell Gorge ditto in the south but in between you have no option but Mt Elizabeth Station which is uninviting but for one night ok. One could always skip the Gibb River Rd by visiting El Questro from Kununurra and Bell from Derby and so avoiding most of the gravel but you would miss a lot of the stunning landscape. I am 72 yo and not an experienced 4wheel driver but loved it despite blowing a tyre. Do it!

What an amazing trip!! We met so many wonderful people traveling along the Gibb and evening discussions always included road conditions. We'd ask those coming from the opposite direction and frequently heard the road had never been this bad. So we were always driving on the look out.. waiting... and watching for the really REALLY bad conditions.. but it was all truly manageable! Several sections were paved - typically at places where the road would wash out completely or along steep passes. There is talk of paving the entire Gibb - it would be a real shame!! The Gibb should be left alone as an Australian treasure! Marveling at the enormous beauty of the KIMBERLEY!

We traveled with this family company (Adam and Lucy) from Darwin to Broome on the Gibb River Road over 9 days. It was amazing (and challenging). We slept in swags, walked and rock climbed into gorges, swam in pools, saw rock art and crocodiles, and ate around the camp fire each night. The meals were often roasts and casseroles cooked in dutch ovens on the fire. We saw more sunsets and dawns than I have seen in quite a while.
