We went there at the beginning of 2024 and made a Santoku and a Nakirie knife. It was an amazing experience and one of the best workshops we have ever attended. The master was very skilled, humerous, interested and easy to talk to. You felt immediatly welcome and it was an great atmosphere from the beginning to the end.
When we searched for knife making experience in Japan, Workshop Kurogane stood out. We choose it and just for the workshop we traveled all the way through Shikoku and it was totally worth it. We would definitly do it again and recommend it to everyone

Without doubt this is the most amazing hands on experience we have had in Japan. Hayashi San and Jesse San made this day something we will treasure. We did the one day workshop but intend to return another time to do a multi day experience.

We visited Workshop Kurogane for the one day knife making experience. This was probably the best part of our visit to Japan. Shimanto is off the beaten path but it’s well worth the trip.
Nobuya Hayashi is a most excellent host. He’s incredibly patient and an excellent teacher. His English is very good.
Nobuya will allow you to be as involved in the knife making process as you like. From picking a design (or coming up with your own) to hammering, grinding, and engraving.
The area around his workshop is beautiful and worth exploring if you have the time.
The cost as of Feb 2023 is 19,000¥ for one person. For two or more it’s 16,000¥ per person. This is a very fair price.
We hope to one day visit again!

You can blacksmith your own knife with the blacksmith master mentoring you every step of the way. You can choose what type of knife and handle you want. You actually get to heat up the steel, hit it with the hammer to straighten and shape it, harden and strengthen it, sand it, put the handle on, and engrave it with a hammer and small chisel. The master and his apprentice both speak English, and they are very friendly and easy to chat with about anything, including explaining more about blacksmithing, if you want. It only cost $150, and with how friendly the master and his apprentice are and with how much I was able to do, this was worth the price in my opinion. You will need to make a reservation before visiting, which you can by emailing him.

You would think that visiting Kochi and the Shimanto valley is just another adventure. But is far, far more than that. It is about meeting with men and women who have embraced nature. It is the story of encounters and you, sharing them with your friends.
The Shimanto valley is luxurious and green. But there, far away, there is that small building and what looks like a fire in the middle of the forest. The place is so beautiful, bucolic and prestine. But then, yes, here it is, high flames are coming up what is a micro blast-furnace.
The knife maker has come to Shimanto 18 years ago. He started his craft by serendepity, when his neighbours, a knife forger, asked him for some help. That's how his companionship started. Now, he has become the master of the place, the only person able to start the forging process with carbon powder and finishing it with sharpening the knifes.

I participated in a workshop with Master Hayashi making our own knives "japanese style knives". The experience was absolutely amazing as we actually got to participate in all steps of the knife making / forging process. The master was so helpful in explaining the techniques we should use for each step and provided perfect guidance along the way. His hospitality throughout the entire experience was amazing and I can recommend this experience enough.

Amazing experience around Shimanto River. We experienced in May, 2018. The workshop was really fun and the knife that I made with a master, Hayashi is absolutely sharp! We strongly recommend this experience for the tourists especially from abroad. A master, Hayashi was so charming and informative person. This is the one of the best cultural experience I've ever
tried. This is definitely worth visiting in Shikoku area. And you can also enjoy the magnificent natural landscape of Shimanto River too! The area was so beautiful and beautiful!
